S. Viets kill refugees
I
DA NANG, South Vietnam (UPI) — South Vietnamese
soldiers today opened fire with machine guns on hundreds
of frantic refugees trying to get aboard one of the last I
flights out of Da Nang, which observers believe is about to
ft fall to the Communists. Panicstricken refugees threw
g themselves in front of the aircraft’s wheels and soldiers
fired on the crowd with machine guns. The floor of the
g plane was covered with blood. Communist gunners were
rocketing the airport as the plane took off, and the pilot of ft
a backup 727 was ordered not to land. Communist troops
moved into Da Nang under cover of a heavy artillery ft
barrage today, prompting military sources to call the ft
situation in South Vietnam’s second largest city
t “hopeless.” ft

I Airlift resumes
ft K
1 PHNOM PENH (UPI) — American officials resumed the
emergency airlift of food, fuel and ammunition to Phnom
Penh today, despite Communist advances near ft
Pochentong Airport. Six government battalions
abandoned two positions near the airport, giving the
Communist-led rebels good positions from which to step ft
up their shelling of the airfield. The relief flights were
suspended for a day Friday by a massive rebel barrage of
rockets and artillery. The airlift has been the sole link
keeping the capital alive since insurgents cut all land and
ft river supply routes in February. In Washington, Pentagon
officials said U.S. arms shipments to Cambodia will stop ft
in a few days because the money appropriated by Con
gress will have run out. They said Lon Nol’s troops have
ammunition for up to two weeks.
I Ford talks tonight
WASHINGTON (UPI) — President Ford will tell the
nation in a television address tonight if he will sign or veto
the $24.8 billion tax cut bill passed by the Democratic
controlled Congress. If Ford signs the legislation, most
Americans will collect rebates of between SIOO and S2OO on
their 1974 tax payments starting in mid-May, and
withholding for 1975 taxes will be reduced. Those provi- ||
sions, plus other tax credits, were approved Wednesday
fay Congress in an effort to stimulate the sluggish
economy. -
| Police take sniper
MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (UPI) — A sniper shooting for
three hours from an attic bedroom killed two policemen
and critically injured a third Friday night. Police finally ft
stormed the house and overpowered him. Officers ft
pumped nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition into the three- ft
story frame house then lobbed tear gas canisters to cover ft
the charge by nearly 100 officers. Four officers rushed up
a ladder to the attic and arrested 23-year-old Jimmy
Carhart. Carhart, wrapped in a blanket to ward off the
smoke, was hospitalized in serious condition with bullet
wounds in the hip. The sniper reportedly had come home ||
earlier in the day in a “despondent” mood.
Gator’s gone
JACKSONVILLE BEACH,
Fla. (UPI) — The gator’s gone,
but residents here are still on
the lookout for a relative.
The eightfoot alligator that
has lived in a drainage ditch
near San Pablo Elementary
School for more than two years
was finally captured Friday,
trucked to a remote area north
of here and set free.
“I’m very relieved that the
gator has gone to live
somewhere else and I’m
hopeful there are no more,”
said Mrs. Marilyn Duncan,
principal at the school.
Mrs. Duncan said she had
been worried that the reptile
posed a potential danger to the
600 children attending the
school.
She said she was told about
two weeks ago that the big
alligator had been sighted with

a second one, possibly a
relative, about five or six feet
long.
“The children and the faculty
will be watching for any
relatives the gator might
have,” Mrs. Duncan said. “And
I will report any findings to the
Game and Fresh Water Fish
Commission.”
The commission previously
had set elaborate traps to catch
the eight-footer, but children
sprung the traps and ruined
them. At least three attemps
were made to lasso the
alligator, but it escaped each
time.
Finally on Friday, four men
using poles and ropes took
about an hour and a half to get
a noose around the 200-pound
aligator’s middle. Police kept
about 50 spectators from
interfering with the capture.
‘Deliverance’ river has killed 19 people so far
WALHALLA, S.C. (UPI) -
The U.S. Forest Service says 19
persons have died trying to ride
the wild Chattooga River, most
of them presumably inspired by
the movie “Deliverance.”
The Forest Service is trying
to curb unqualified river-riders,
but in doing so has riled the
residents along the river almost
as much as the movie did.
The Forest Service is setting
up a one-fourth mile corridor
on each side of the river, which

Authorization for the corridor
comes from Congress as part of
the Chattooga’s wild and scenic
river designation.
The forest service is also
blocking roads leading to the
river. Ultimately there will be
only four ways to get into it.
The Oconee County Council
has approved a resolution
calling for the lifting of federal
regulations. Councilman Her
cial Moore said the restrictions
discriminate mostly against the
people who were “born and
reared near the river.”
“We are not claiming the
river for ourselves but it is
ending up that no one can use
the river unless they want to go
out there in boats and canoes,”
he said.
Moore also said persons
owning land near the river are
Page 9
not going to be able to use that
land, much of which has stayed
in families for generations.
Moore said the movie
“Deliverance”, the story of
four men taking a canoe trip
down the river, plays a “big
part, plays an awful big part”
in the current problems with
the river.
He said the movie has
brought many people to the
river and people have in turn
brought litter.

Moore also charged the
Forest Service is attempting to
commercialize the river, refer
ring to three professional tour
groups licensed to run the
river.
Forest Ranger Bill Craig said
the tour groups are the safest
way to see the river. The
groups are licensed by the park
service and pay fees to the
service, which regulates their
equipment and where they can
stop for lunch breaks.
“These outfits have little
impact on the river,” he said.
“They know that their liveli
hood depends on keeping the
clients and the forest service
happy.”
Craig said the tour groups
have taken 7,100 persons down
the river without loss of life.
Craig agreed the movie is
part of the problem.
“People just do not realize
how rugged the river is.”
