Simmons is a threat
By United Press International
The computerized All-Star
ballots came out Monday and
St. Louis catcher Ted Simmons’
name was on it.
Not that it really matters—it
is a foregone conclusion that
Johnny Bench, if he stays
healthy, will be behind the
plate when the National League
squares off with the American
League July 15.
This is not a knock on
Simmons’ abilities: It’s just
that Bench has been around a
while longer and has rolled up
some impressive statistics in
his seven years with Cinncin
nati.
Simmons has been in the big
leagues for only four seasons
and a regular for just three. He
has hit .304, .303, and .272 in
those three years—and last
season was his best despite the
30-point drop in batting avera
ge. He drove in over 100 runs
for the first time and hit 20
home runs.
Simmons was second among
catchers in doubles, home runs,
total bases and RBI in the

Still, Simmons only finished
third in the voting for the

summer behind Bench and
Philadelphia’s Bob Boone.
The Cardinals’ field general
is apparently out to make
amends this season and is in
his best training camp ever.
Simmons had one game this
spring in which he hit three
home runs—and was walked in
the ninth inning to prevent a
possibility of four in consecu

Crum not

in job
SAN DIEGO (UPl)—Louis
ville basketball Coach Denny
Crum, who has been prominent
ly mentioned in speculation of
John Wooden’s successor at
UCLA, Monday ruled out the
Bruin job in his plans for the
immediate future.
Crum, 37, a former Wooden
player and chief assistant, told
a hastily called news confer
ence at the San Diego Sports
Arena that he planned to
remain at Louisville for at least
the four remaining years of his
five-year contract.
“I felt because of all the
speculation that I should tell
my athletic director (Dave
Hart) that I would honor my
contract at Louisville,” Crum
said.
“I have not been offered a
job at UCLA. I have no idea if
they planned to offer it to me.
“I’m going to be coaching at
Louisville for a long time.”
Wooden, 64, resigned Satur
day after UCLA had defeated
Louisville, 75-74, in overtime.

SAN DIEGO—UCLA coach John Wooden wean a smile as his Bruins beat Kentucky 92-85 in

Wooden leaves
a big winner
SAN DIEGO (UPI) - In his
final post-game interview ses
sion Monday night, retiring
UCLA basketball Coach John
Wooden admitted he thought
“we had a chance” to win the
Bruins’ 10th NCAA champion
ship.
“I guess to say that I thought
we would go this far would be
stretching the point,” Wooden
said, following UCLA’s 92-85
victory over Kentucky in the
national finals. “But I did think
we had a chance.”
For Wooden, who announced
his retirement Saturday, it was
a story-book finish for a man
who came to Los Angeles from
Indiana State Teachers College
in 1948.
“My feelings at this moment
are a combination of sadness
and happiness,” he said. “I’m
sad at leaving the young people
whom I’ve been associated with
so many years, members of the
media with whom I haven’t
always agreed and the other
players, coaches and adminis
trators it has been my pleasure
to be associated with over the
years.”
Os the game, Wooden said,
“We made no adjustment at
halftime to get more rebounds
even though we were out
rebounded by six in the first
half and outrebounded by 12 in
the second.
“I stress conditioning from
the first day of practice
through the championship game
of the season. I keep working
them in practice but it’s up to
them to keep up physically
between games.
“This, by far, was our most
physical game of the year.”
Richard Washington, who
scored 28 points against Ken-
tucky and was chosen the Most
Valuable Player of the tour
nament, said:
“I remember in Coach
Wooden’s pre-game talk, I was
thinking I had better listen
because it was his last one. I

thought he had to go out in
style. Ten is a nice round
number for championships.”
Kentucky Coach Joe B. Hall
was not dejected.
“We had a great year,” he
said. “I’ll never forget our six
seniors. I wish I could adopt all
of them. UCLA’s defensive
board work turned things
around for them. Ralph Drollin
ger had three baskets real
quick in the second half and he
was a thorn in our side most of
the time he was in there.
“I felt we had some chances
to win it but it didn’t seem to
be meant for us. We took some
questionable shots but that is
no criticism. We wanted to stay
loose in our shooting.

He’s been a great player for

Jabbar fined S3OO
By GARY KALE
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPI) - Larry
Fleisher, attorney for the NBA
Players Association, said Mon
day he would pull out all stops
in assisting the American Civil
Liberties Union in combating
the S3OO fine levied against
Milwaukee’s Kareem Abdul-
Jabbar by Commissioner Wal
ter Kennedy.
Paul Silas of the Boston
Celtics, president of the As
sociation; Wes Unseld of the
Washington Bullets and Bill
Bradley of the New York
Knicks also were adamant in
their belief that “all athletes
have a right to speak out and
that a player’s feelings should
not be muffled by the league,
league.
In Milwaukee, General
Manager Wayne Embry an
nounced that the Bucks have
paid the fin? and said, “The
Bucks are sending the money
with the provision made by the
NBA that if Kareem’s appeal is
successful it will be refunded.
We support Kareem but we
can’t take a chance on his
suspension.”
Fleisher, a guest speaker at a
lunch announcing the joint
sponsorship of the NBA Players
Association and the YMCAs of
the United States in promoting
junior basketball competition,
said “it was improper for the
league office to fine a player
for stating his opinion about
officiating” in the NBA.
Abdul-Jabbar enlisted the aid
of the ACLU after being rapped
by a stiff fine for calling
referee Jerry Loeber inept in
his job.

“The ACLU called me at
Kareem’s behest,” Fleisher
said. “They are going to charge
the NBA with stifling free
speech. It will be a constitution
al matter with them. We are
going on the theme that
Kareem did not do anything
“detrimental” to the game with
his outburst and we’ll fight the
S3OO fine.”
Abdul-Jabbar was soaked
S2OO for what he said to Loeber
in public and another SIOO for
entering the referees’ quarters.
Concerning the Players As
sociation’s affiliation with the
YMCA, Silas said kids will'

“We of the Players Association
feel the joint program will

to make it so.”
