Atlanta wants back in net
ATLANTA (UPI) - The city
of Atlanta will ask the
Organized Crime Prevention
Council to reconsider its deci
sion to keep Atlanta out of its
information network and, if
necessary, fight the explusion
in court, Mayor Maynard
Jackson said Tuesday.
The OCPC decided last
Friday not to include the
Atlanta police department in its
pool of tips on mob activities.
“If necessary, we will pursue
legal processes to correct what
we consider an injustice by the
Organized Crime Prevention
Council,” said Jackson. “We’re

The mayor said “I have no
idea” whether the council’s
decision was a racial slur
against Jackson and Atlanta
Public Safety Director A.
Reginald Eaves, who are both
black, or whether it was related
to Eaves employing a secretary
with a police record. Jackson
said the dismissed secretary,
Dan Odom, was investigated
and cleared of any possible
complicity in “leaks” of intelli
gence data.
“I am convinced to a moral
certainty, based on the facts,
that there was in fact not an
intelligence leak involving Dan
Odom," said Jackson.
The OCPC is a statewide
network of city and county
police agencies which alert
each other when a known
organized crime figure moves
from one area to another.
Jackson said most of the mob
activity focuses on Atlanta, and
that the city would not stop
tipping off smaller towns about
criminal movements, “even
though they can’t reciprocate.”
“If for some reason we were
to cut off information to our
sister cities, they would suffer
—more than we would suffer if
those cities cut off information
to us,” said Jackson. “The
organized crime information
system is a two-way street; but
we’re not going to make our
sister cities suffer.”
He added that “obviously, it
doesn’t look good for the city of
Atlanta” to be unwelcome in
the police intelligence system,
but said membership the
OCPC is not terribly important
to the city’s anti-mob efforts.
