County ponders
board appointment
Spalding County Commiss
ioners were to meet this after
noon to appoint someone to fill a
vacancy on the county’s zoning
board left by James “Red”
Head who recently resigned.
This morning Commission
Chairman Sandy Morgan said
the selection will be made from
a list of several persons they
have considered. >
He said the commissioners
also will vote today on whether
to close off a portion of County
Line road near Rover as
requested by Otis Blake, who
owns property on both sides of
the road and wants to develop
the area.
At yesterday’s commission
meeting Bobby Harrison, a
rural mail carrier, objected to
the closing as it would cut both
his route and his pay, he said.
Commissioner Reid Childers
was in favor of closing the road.
Rec. program
to include
senior citizens
The Griffin-Spalding Recrea
tion Board has decided to get
more involved with a recreation
program for senior citizens.
During their meeting last
night, the board discussed a
program which would involve
activities one day each month
for four hours from 10 a.m. until
2.
The inside activities would
include pool, knitting classes,
checkers and ceramics.
Horse shoes and shuffle board
would be included in the outside
program.
Chairman Bob Braddock said
the Golden Age Club is working
with Director Larry Neill on the
program.
He said they are looking into
the possibility of obtaining
funds for free lunches through
the federal government.
The board is very enthused
about the program, he said, as
they feel there is a void in the
local recreation set up for the
senior age group. There is a
great need for the program
here, he said.
The board hopes the program
may be expanded to meet more
often with added activities if
interest warrants it, he added.
Mini-bike stolen
Spalding Sheriff’s officers
received a complaint of a stolen
mini-bike moter yesterday.
Janie Atkins of Route Five,
Carey’s Trailer Park reported
that the Briggs & Stratton
Speedway Shark motor, valued
at SIOO, was stolen from her
residence around 3 p.m.

Commissioners Morgan and P.
W. Hamil said they were going
to look at the road this morning,
in the rain, before they made
their decision.
Mr. Morgan said he learned
yesterday that his continuing to
serve as a county commissioner
until a new man is elected
depends upon the way Gov.
George Busbee accepts his
resignation.
If Gov. Busbee writes that he
has accepted Morgan’s
resignation, the resignation will
be effective immediately.
If the governor stipulates the
resignation is subject to a new
commissioner being sworn in,
then Morgan may remain in
office until that time.
Gov. Busbee is on vacation
until April 9 and it probably will
be a day or two after then before
he takes action, Morgan said.
