Home remedies
may be helpful
By JOHN T. WATTS
Copley News Service
Dear John:
The comments from Mrs.
R. A. (the alone man past 50
needs to learn cooperation,
consideration, appreciation,
etc.) were excellently stated
and true. Very well put and
men should pay heed. Why do
these comments have to be
excused by you?
Yes, true, home and folk
remedies — they help some
and hurt no one. Diets are
frequently faulty. It was not a
doctor who discovered digi
talis. Doctors tried to jail Sis
ter Kenny. Avoid all pills and
medicines as much as possi
ble.
If you haven’t tried it (vita
min C, etc.) don’t knock it.
Try it! I have a friend my
age. We started pain togeth
er. Both on aspirin and corti
sone drugs. Both developed
the always present side ef
fects.
She stuck loyally to the
M.D. and is now a total zom
bie, strictly bed care — sleep
ing pills, pain pills, tranquil
izers and all the shots. I got
mad when I learned about the
side effects and started tak
ing everything I ever heard of
folk wise.
Doctors even said don’t
swim, so I promptly began a
daily swim, which I hadn’t
thought of and though there’s
lots of pain I’m fine and
working and active and hap
py and independent. Same
doctor.
Rather than, as the physi
cian (says), look up his
school, his place percentile in
grad class, his curriculum in
nutrition and physiology, quiz
him on your readings of sci
ence, biology and physiology,
— you have as much right to
knowledge as he has and doc
tors need to find out that they
are not know-it-alls.
Thank you for letting me
get this off my chest. —
Aileen D.
P.S. Who is John Watts?

tant. He is just the guy who
reads hundreds — sometimes
thousands —of letters and
tries to squeeze the ones he
thinks are of most interest to
his readers into this column.
His qualifications for this in

newspaper editor and report
er.
Your comments on Mrs.
R. A.’s letter are most inter
esting. I note that you, too,
have been hurt and are glad
to get something off your
chest.
Just a word or two again
about folk remedies. Use
them with common sense.
Dear John:
I notice the criticism of
both yourself and D. Moore of
the gentleman who sat in the
corner during the dance be
cause of age. Os course, you
were both right. I would like
to add, however, that people
of all ages need to “invest” in
those around them and delib
erately give people “alone”
some love via “warm
strokes” of conversation or
simply listening.
To be alone, whether a bore
or a conversational whiz, is
painful; in fact, it’s hell. We
live in a time of nuclear star
vation, each living in his own
orbit. This has a poisonous ef
fect on togetherness. Respon
sible, mature, loving people
should deliberately search
out, touch, hug, listen and
give warm strokes. It pays. It
could have made all the dif
ference in the world to our
friend at the dance.
Not only that, it can spread
like a sunrise across an entire
social affiar.
I encourage all of us to try
it after reading this today.
What an impact! — Jack
Phillips.
Dear Jack:
You could be right. Much,
much more warmth is needed
in human relations every
where. But I don’t know about
the hugging. Probably you
meant that figuratively.
One question: Why did you
write your letter on a paper
napkin? That must be a first
for this department.
