Track team biggest,
may be the best
“Talent-wise, the Griffin
track team is better off than it
has ever been.
“There is a lot of competition
and plenty of challenges at
every position.
“We should have a good team
this year. If we don’t, I’ll be
mighty disappointed,” Coach
Johnny Goodrum said this
morning.
A coach couldn’t have made
those statements about Griffin
High track a few years ago.
Interest in track then was very
low.
Coach Goodrum has improv
ed the track program. His
dedication and interest has been
catching.
The coach took over the track
program five years ago. There
were 11 people on his first team.
Today there are over 65
students out for track.
Actually Griffin has two
teams. Over 20 students are
eighth graders and will compete
as “b” teamers. The rest are
varsity trackmen.

by 10 strokes, 334 to 344.
It was the first 18-hole tourna

That is the lowest score by a

TITLE BOUT PROBABLE
SAN DIEGO (UPI) - A
heavyweight title bout between
Muhammad Ali and Ken
Norton, the ex-Marine who
broke Ali’s jaw two years ago,
is probable this year, according
to Norton’s co-manager Bob
Biron.
Biron said Ali would schedule
a fight in June and that no
announcement of his next fight
would be made until after that
bout. Biron went on to say he
hoped the fight announced then
would be between Norton and
Ali.
Norton, an underdog, broke
Ali’s jaw en route to a 12-round
split decision victory in April,
1973.

I Hawks
I
The Atlanta Hawks lost their 50th game of the National
Basketball Association season last night, a 113-104
decision to the Houston Rockets. Herm Gilliam scored 24
points for the Hawks, who end their season Saturday night
in Washington.
| Flames
The Atlanta Flames staved off elimination from the
National Hockey League playoff race last night by
battling the New York Islanders to a 2-2 tie in New York.
The tie left the Flames four points behind the third-place
New York Rangers in the Patrick Division, putting
tonight’s game with Toronto in the must-win category.
I
I Braves
The Atlanta Braves waited until Catfish Hunter left the
game yesterday, then they jumped on his reliefer for
| three runs in the eighth inning to beat the New York
Yankees 4-1. A bases-loaded double by Dusty Baker was
the decisive blow. Hunter had held the Braves to four hits
and an unearned run in seven innings.
College
1 Outfielder Bubba Wilson drove in three runs with a

victorious, pounding Erskine College 11-2 in Atlanta.
them,” Coach Goodrum said.
“It’s great to see that kind of
interest in the program,” he
added.
“We don’t have a star like
Chester Riggins (Chester was
one of the state’s outstanding
distant runners last year) but
we should do all right as a
team,” Coach Goodrum said.
As usual, all of Griffin’s
meets will be out-of-town.
Griffin High does not have track
facilities.
Coach Goodrum has selected
the people to compete Friday in
the season-opening meet at
Jackson.
The coach probably will make
some adjustments before the
meet and will continue to make
adjustments as the season
progresses.
Right now Griffin has two
mile relay teams. Ralph Ray,
Johnathan Nelms, Ed Hayes
and Kenneth Coggins are on the
first team and William
Troutman, Craig Nelms, Greg
Head and Gary Bartholomew
are on the number two team.
Bubba Mabbett toured the 18
holes in 81 strokes and John
King and Jere Moore had 88s.
Griffin was scheduled to play
Fayette today and has a match
in Jackson tomorrow.
Griffin has won three of four
matches. It is 6-1 against team
competition.

has surgery
AUBURN, Ala. (UPI) -
Eddie Johnson, a 6-2 sophmore
who was Auburn’s leading
scorer the last two seasons, is
in a Georgia hospital resting
from corrective surgery on his
knee.
Columbus Medical Center
doctors said there were no
complications following Tues
day’s surgery which removed
torn cartiledge from Johnson’s
left knee.
Auburn officials said Johnson
is expected to stay at the
hospital for about a week, then
return to Auburn.
The operation followed a high
school injury that was ag
gravated this season, officials
said.
The operation will not jeop
ardize Johnson’s career “since
the surgery didn’t involve any
ligaments,” said Auburn Coach
Bob Davis. “It was corrective
surgery and shouldn’t harm his
movement.”
Johnson averaged 20.9 points
a game for Auburn, which was
18-8 overall.
