It was learned from sources
in Reno, Nev., that when Mrs.
Adams was divorced from her
first husband, J. Russell
Lauben in 1952, she got $17,500
in cash, undetermined cash
benefits from three life insur
ance policies and some proper
ty. The couple lived in
Bronxville, N.Y., from the time
of their marriage in 1940 until
their divorce.
It was also learned that she
earned a bachelor’s degree in
business administration from
Boston College in the 19205.
Mrs. Bertha Nelson, a niece
of Mrs. Adams and her only
identified surviving relative,
attended the funeral Thursday.
“I had no idea she had any
money at all,” said Mrs.
Nelson, a factory worker from
Bucks Brothers in Milbury,
Mass.
She said she had last seen
her aunt six years ago and last
talked to her on the telephone
last year. But she said she
could not fill in the many gaps
in her aunt’s life history.
A source close to Mrs. Nelson
said an unidentified man
claiming to be Mrs. Nelson’s
brother and a nephew of Mrs.
Adams had gotten in touch with
her and there would be an
attempt to confirm his identity.
Mrs. Nelson said she had not
heard from her brother in
several years.
Probate court records showed
Mrs. Adams’ second husband,
paper magnate Leroy Adams of
Holyoke, Mass., left her only
$394 in a bank account and one
share of Electric Bond and
Share Co. stock, valued at S2B
at the time of his death in 1954.
Police records show that Mrs.
Adams was arrested on prosti
tution charges in 1961 but was
acquitted. Neighbors have com
plained that she had male
callers “at all hours” at the
home.

Plane with orphans crashes
SAIGON (UPI) — Initial reports from Saigon indicate
that a possible 110 to 115 persons survived the crash of a
huge U.S. Air Force CSA Galaxy cargo plane trying to
make an emergency landing at Tan Son Nhut Airport
today. The plane was jammed with 294 persons, most of
them Vietnamese war orphans. A spokesman at the 7th
Day Adventist Hospital at the edge of Tan Son Nhut said
the survivors, possibly 100 orphans and 10 to 15 adults, had
been bought to the hospital, but many were in critical
condition.
Viet children arrive
The first 60 Vietnamese children to arrive in the United
States were greeted by happy foster parents across the
country Thursday. And President Ford announced plans
for airlifting 2,000 more children out of Vietnam as soon as
possible. Adoption arrangements are complete for the
first group of children, who were flown to various parts of
the country Thursday.
Ford announces ‘lift’
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (UPI) —ln a news conference
in San Diego Thursday President Ford announced he set
in motion an airlift of 2,000 South Vietnamese orphans and
ordered all available Navy ships to stand by near South
Vietnam to assist refugees if necessary. He then returned
to Palm Springs for a meeting with Secretary of State
Henry Kissinger. Ford said “there are no plans
whatsoever for U.S. military involvement in Vietnam.” 1
The President told his news conference he will ask
Congress for more “humanitarian” aid for South
Vietnam, and also will not only press his pending request
for S3OO in military aid, but may ask for more.
Gen. Weyand agrees
SAIGON (UPI) - U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen.
Frederick C. Weyand said he agrees with President
Nguyen Van Thieu’s military efforts, even though the
South Vietnamese armed forces have experienced mas
sive setbacks. In Saigon Roman Catholics joined in the
general clamor for Thieu to step down. In a related
incident the govemmment claimed to have cracked thei
second plot in a week for a coup against Thieu. There were
increasing signs that Thieu, with full U.S. backing,
intended to fight all attempts to force him out of office.
No aid means bloodbath
PHNOM PENH (UPI) - Cambodian Prime Minister
Long Boret, in Bali, Indonesia, said there would be a
bloodbath in Cambodia if the United States cut off aid. He
said, “...We do not lack determination, but we need
material aid urgently.” He added he would return to-
Phnom Penh in a few days to head the govemmment.
Meanwhile, three positions near Phnom Penh under
heavy attack were given up today by government forces.
Reinforcements were moved in by helicopter to plug holes
in the city’s defense line.
