Business on 1-75
coming out of slump
The Henry County Weekly-Advertiser
Business on Interstate 75 through Henry Countj
has been good for the past three months, reaching a
peak over the Easter holidays with motels
overflowing with trade. Businessmen along 1-75 are
generally optimistic for the summer months ahead.
May Ann Petty of Locust Grove’s Holiday Inn says
that business has been good since December 20, with
January, February, and March sales steadily
climbing. “Each month has been better than
comparable months last year,” Mrs. Petty said.
“We’re exceeding by large amounts anything we’ve
done In prior years," she reiterated. Mrs. Petty
indicated that if the pattern holds from previous
years, April will be about the same as March and
May will decline slightly, picking up when summer
holidays roll around.
Zack Hinton of SHP Economy Inn In Locust Grove
said, "Business in the last two weeks has been
fantastic." Last year in March the motel was
experiencing a 20 percent occupancy. This year in
the third month of the year a 70 percent occupancy
level was maintained, Hinton said. Over the Easter
weekend, Economy Inn reached a peak of 120
percent occupancy, renting some rooms twice in one
day.
Bill Pitts of Hampton House In McDonough said,
"Business is good as far as we're concerned. It it’s
not as good as we like to think, it’s because it was so

The Fulton County Commis
sion voted 5-2 Friday to set up
its own crime fighting force
separate from the city police.
The commission gave Jenkins
the job of making it a reality.
Jenkins was hired for a 12-
month period beginning July 1
at a salary of at least $25,000 to
help organize the new depart
ment and locate a permanent
chief. His exact salary is to be
negotiated with County Manag
er Sam Brownlee.
Jenkins told a news confer
ence shortly after his hiring
that a new force can be
organized and operating in less
than three months.

bad last year it seems good.” Sales have been way
up for the past four months over last year’s records,
he Indicated.
Charlie Burnett of McDonough Holiday Inn said
business is good and “I think it'll be real good this
summer.”
Jim Ellison of McDonald’s said he thinks people
are traveling much more this year because of less
publicity about the energy crisis. John G. Allen of
Patrick’s Economy Inn said that 1974 was the most
unusual year he’d seen in six years on the road.
“The cost of living is squeezing travel out,” Mr.
Allen thinks. Business was exceptionally good over
the holidays for the inn.
Mrs. Allen added that one lady who came into the
motel said she had clocked traffic backed up for
eight miles between McDonough and Atlanta. Mrs.
Allen believes that many people are taking their last
rung because of the declining economy. "One man
out of work In construction said he just decided to
use the time to take a vacation,” she explained.
Service stations were feeling the upsurge In
business conditions. Bob Goodwin of Hightower
Service State on Highway 255 said that business had
been very good for the three weeks before Easter as
well as over the holiday. "I’m afraid it may slack off
this summer, but perhaps the tax rebate will help ”
he said.
“If we can get well trained
police officers, it puts you in
business more quickly,” said
Jenkins. He said he will recruit
officers from all across the
metropolitan area and “certain
ly encourage” city officers to
join the new department.
City Council President Wyche
Fowler called the county
commission’s move “a hastily
conceived and hastily imple
mented decision.”
Fowler said the City Council
will “provide what is neces
sary” in salaries and benefits
to prevent the defection of
Atlanta officers to the county
police ranks.
Fowler also said Fulton
County’s plans to use tax
money from city residents to
create and operate a county
force constitutes “double taxa
tion.” He said such use of tax
money is unfair and probably
unconstitutional.
Atlanta Public Safety Com
missioner Reginald Eaves also
criticized the decision.
“I am not happy,” said
Eaves. “I’m concerned about
continuity and good law en
forcement across county lines.”

The commission adopted a
resolution by Commissioner
Milton G. Farris to establish a
new force and terminate its
contract with Atlanta for police
services in the unincorporated
areas of Fulton County on June
30.
Jenkins, 67, retired from the
Atlanta force in 1972 and went
to work for Emory University
later that year.
Jenkins’ hiring was seen as a
major move to give the new
department prestige in law
enforcement circles separate
from the Atlanta force, which
has been embroiled in recent
controversies.
The Atlanta police depart
ment was recently ousted from
the statewide information net
work run by the Organized
Crime Prevention Council
which keeps tabs on the
movements of known criminal
and reports them to city and
county police forces within the
network.
The OCPC said the reason for
the indefinite suspension of
Atlanta from the network was
the hiring of a man with a
known criminal record, Dan
Odom, as personal secretary to
Public Safety Commissioner
Reginald Eaves.
