Joe McGee gets the handshakes after slugging a home run

Giants get last laugh
By BILL MADDEN
UPI Sports Writer
No one (east of San Francis
co anyway) is laughing any
more over the supposedly one
sided Bobby Bonds-for-Bobby
Murcer deal.
Folks in New York, especial
ly, are not finding Bonds’
current .148 batting average
very funny. And in San
Francisco, where the Giants
were vilified for allowing
themselves to be “suckered”
into such a trade, Bobby
Murcer’s .345 is looking mighty
fine right now.
Murcer reached that lofty
average Wednesday by banging
out a triple and two singles and
driving in three runs in the
Giants’ 7-1 victory over the San
Diego Padres. Meanwhile, back
East, poor Bobby Bonds was
still struggling, stranding five
runners —three on a bases
loaded strikeout—during the
Yankees’ sixth loss in seven
outings.
“I don’t mean to downgrade
Bobby Bonds for one minute,”
said Giants Manager Wes
Westrum, “but in Murcer, I
think we got as good, if not
better, player in return. Mur
cer’s the kind of player I
wanted to lead my club. He’s a
smart hitter and he is setting a
wonderful example for my
younger players.”
Murcer’s two-run triple was
the key blow during a five-run
rally in the fifth inning and the
28-year old ex-Yankee singled
in another run in the eighth. All
told, he has six RBIs in eight
games.
“That’s the way I like to hit,”
said Murcer after his triple
which soared into the gap in
left-center. “I don’t think home
run unless I see a pitch I know
I can hit. When there are guys
on base, though, I get jacked
up.”
John D’Acquisto, with 1 1-3
innings of relief help from
Randy Moffitt, picked up the
victory for the Giants while
Dan Spillner, victim of Mur
cer’s triple, was tagged with
the loss.
Elsewhere in the National
League Wednesday, Atlanta
downed Houston, 5-2, Montreal
blanked Pittsburgh, 5-0, the
Chicago Cubs clubbed Philadel
phia, 9-3, St. Louis shaded the
New York Mets, 3-2, and Los
Angeles ambushed Cincinnati,
7-6.
In American League action, it
was Baltimore 2 Milwaukee 0;
Kansas City 6 Oakland 2;
Boston 4 the New York
Yankees 2; Texas 14 the
Chicago White Sox 4; and
Minnesota 10 California 4.
Dodgers 7, Reds 6:
Jimmy Wynn’s grand slam
homer in the seventh inning
tied the game and Steve
Garvey’s bases-loaded single in
the ninth won it, as the Dodgers
made it three straight over the
Reds in Los Angeles after
losing a season-opening three
game series in Cincinnati. It
was the fourth career grand
slam for Wynn and his fourth
homer this season. Mike
Marshall got the win in relief.
Braves 5, Astros 2:
Buzz Capra, apparently deter
mined to prove last year’s 16-8
mark was no fluke, scattered
six hits against Houston in
claiming his second victory in
as many starts for Atlanta.
Dusty Baker smacked a solo
homer for the Braves in the
second inning and Atlanta
scored four more in the fourth
—the big hit being “Sugar
Bear” Blanks’ bases-loaded
two-run single.
Expos 5, Pirates 0:
Montreal’s 35-year-old Woody
Fryman, celebrating his return
to the National League after a
stay in the American
league, limited the usually
potent Pittsburgh attack to just
five singles and didn't allow a
runner past first until the
eighth. Fryman got an early
cushion from run-scoring sin
gles by Pepe Mangual and
Tony Scott in the first and
Larry Parrish’s first major
league homer in the second.
Cubs 9, Phillies 3:
Manny Trillo’s three-run
homer was the big blow in
Chicago’s five-run, first-inning
outburst against Philadelphia.
Bill Madlock and Rick Monday,
with three hits apiece, paced a
14-hit Cub attack. Bill Bonham
went the distance, yielding six
hits, to gain the win.
Cardinals 3, Mets 2:
Run-scoring singles by Lou
Brock and Ed Brinkman,
combined with two Mets’
errors, enabled St. Louis to
stage a three-run, fifth-inning
rally and deal New York its
