Cambodia surrenders
After five years of war the U.S.-supported government
of Cambodia surrendered to the Communist-led Khmer
Rouge early today. The conflict took the lives of a quarter
| million persons and left millions of other homeless.
I Leaders of the defeated goverment began giving
v themselves up to the new rulers, as thousands of Cam
s bodians crowded the streets of Phnom Penh waving white
Hags. Neighboring Thailand closed its borders with Cam-
II bodia, but Australia citing “realitis of the situation,”
recognized the new government.
U.S. people to leave
SAIGON (UPI) — After warning Americans in South
Vietnam Wednesday that time to leave the country was
running out, officials today organized a massive
evacuation of U .S. citizens on orders from President Ford.
Meanwhile, Communist forces moved heavy artillery into
the Mekong Delta for the first time. Using 130 mm guns
they bombarded a South Vietnamese Navy transport. The
ship was 60 per cent destroyed and 15 crewmen killed or
wounded. The capital of Ninh Thun province was captured
by Communist troops and shut down Bien Hoa Air Base
for six hours. The government still held besieged Xuan
IjOC.
I Not fast enough
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Several members of the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee say the
administration is not evacuating Americans fast enough
from South Vietnam. A committee vote was postponed
until at least this afternoon on S2OO million in
humanitarian and evacuation funds as a result. President
Ford said Wednesday that he had ordered all nonessential
U.S. personnel to leave South Vietnam. But he gave no
details of the rate of withdrawals.
Tells about killings
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — Ex-convict Anthony Harris,
a police informer, related the gruesome details of the
kidnap of Richard Hague and his wife, Quita, Wednesday,
in the trial of four men accused of San Francisco’s
“Zebra” murders. The victims were hacked with a
machete-like weapon and Mrs. Hague was killed. A
defense attorney earlier charged that Harris was insane
and his testimony unreliable.
Uneasy peace in Lebanon
BEIRUT (UPI) — An uneasy peace descended in
Lebanon today after four days of bloody fighting that left
almost 400 persons dead or wounded. Right-wing
Phalangists and Palestinian guerrillas seemed to be
honoring a shaky truce arranged by the government
Wednesday night. Premier Rashid Solh announced the
ceasefire over Beirut Radio and said it would be enforced
with an “iron fist” by Lebanese security forces.

schools.
“The board has the report
and I intend to appoint a
citizens committee to review
the proposals,” Supt. Alonzo
Crim said Wednesday.
School Board President Ben
jamin Mays said no schools
would be closed during the 1975-
76 school term.
The study team said the cost
of educating a child in Atlanta
was SSOO more than the
statewide average of SBO9. The
team also said enrollment in
the schools recommended for
closing is too low to provide
adequate education.
Enrollment, which has de
clined steadily during the past
few years as a result of flight
to the suburbs, is expected to
be down by 2,000 in Atlanta
schools this year. It now stands
at about 85,000.
“The per pupil cost in the
Atlanta school system is
greater than any school system
in the state and significantly
higher than the 10 largest
systems,” the team said in its
79-page report.
The report, which was sent to
the board last weekend, result
ed from a school study held
every five years at the request
of school officials.
Among the schools the team
said should be closed are 31
elementary schools, one middle
school and four high schools.
The group’s proposal called
for three new middle schools in
the city and one new high
school in the growing southwest
section.
It urged adoption of a plan
for schools to be set up from
kindergarten to fifth grade,
sixth through eighth grades and
ninth through 12th grades.
