New Zealand returning
to geothermal power
By FRANK T. MARTIN
Copley News Service
WELLINGTON, New Zea
land — The energy pinch is
beginning to hit this country
as it has the United States. So
the new battle cry is “full
steam ahead!”
Government and private
developers again are taking a
serious look at geothermal
power resources available in
New Zealand. With the help of
a large grant from the New
Zealand Energy Research
and Development Commit
tee, two key projects are in
the works aimed at eventual
ly drawing energy from
natural steam escaping from
the earth’s interior.
The projects include sur
veys of geothermal fields to
pinpoint the best drilling
areas and research into cor
rosion problems of steam and
water at the new Broadlands
field in the central North Is
land.
The energy crunch is de
veloping in New Zealand be
cause of strong opposition to
nuclear power reactors,
dwindling water power
capacity and higher costs for

Application requires
written statement of loss

Dear ’Gene:
I had a new passport in
1973, but after my trip to
Mexico over the holidays that
year, we moved. During the
process I packed away my
passport so thoroughly I can’t
even find it now. Is die pass
port still good? What do I do
for my next trip to the South
Sea islands this summer?
Can’t Find
Dear Can’t Find:
Your passport remains
valid for five years from its
date of issue.
However, if you are unable
to locate it, it will be neces
sary for you to apply for a
new passport for your travel.
The requirements are the
same as your initial passport,
i.e., evidence of your U.S.
citizenship (certified birth
certificate is your best evi
dence if born in the United
States), two new photo
graphs, size 2.5x2.5 inches,
your current identification,
such as a valid driver’s li
cense, and the sl3 fee. You
will also be required to com
plete a detailed written state
ment regarding the loss of
your 1973 passport. And do
apply early, as it will take
longer to issue your passport
during the peak travel sea
son.

operating conventional power
plants, at a time when the
country’s demands for elec
tricity are climbing at the
rate of 10 per cent a year.
Twenty years ago the
prospect of geothermal
power appeared to be bright
in New Zealand as steam
deposits were discovered and
developed at Wairakei on the
North Island, where the na
tion’s first geothermal power
station was built.
The newfound power
source seemed to signal the
start of an exciting new
energy-development future.
But it was not to be. Enthusi
asm waned, new plans never
left the drawing board, ex
ploration diminished and
eventually was halted.
Ironically, as New Zealand
turned from geothermal
power, the world began to
seize on its promise. New
Zealand engineers and scien
tists were flown from nation
to nation, sharing their
knowledge of how to convert
natural steam into elec
tricity.
As interest dwindled at
home, New Zealanders gave
advice to geothermal project
my trip around the world? I
understand smallpox shots
are not required anymore.

Dear Relieved:
Smallpox shots are no
longer required for Europe if
traveling directly from the
United States. However,
health requirements vary
from country to country, es
pecially in the Far Eastern
countries. It is recommended

But now the pendulum is
swinging back. Exploratory
drilling has been resumed in
the Wairakei area, and there
are signs of a serious intent to
look at geothermal power
again at the nearby Broad

Eighteen years ago the
government brought Rhodes

from the South Island to sort
out some of the trickier prob

steam field. Now a member
of Parliament from Taupo,
Ridley says that while the
Wairakei station generates 15
per cent of the North Island’s
electricity supply, “we are
just scratching the surface.”
Geothermal power could be
