Ford trying to arrange
cease-fire in Vietnam
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
President Ford says a large
force of American troops may
have to return to Vietnam for
the short-term, limited purpose
of helping evacuate Americans
and the South Vietnamese who
once fought with them.
Ford said he was trying to
arrange a cease-fire and to
reopen peace negotiations now
that President Nguyen Van
Thieu has resigned, but he held
out little hope.
An evacuation under combat
conditions, he said, would mean
many American troops would
be needed to take out the few
thousand Americans, the Viet
namese and their families who
sided with the United States for
15 years and more. The
estimates run up to 200,000.
U.S. Marines, said Ford, have

Fulton solicitor
plans crackdown
on pornography
ATLANTA (UPI) - A Fulton
County official said Monday he
plans to use the state’s new
obscenity law, one of the
toughest in the nation, to make
life harder on operators of
adult book stores and porno
graphic movie houses.
The law, signed by Gov.
George Busbee Friday and due
to take effect July 1, is
intended to bring the state into
compliance with the Supreme
Court’s latest obscenity ruling
which requires states to spell
out what they consider obscene.
County Solicitor General Hin
son McAuliffe said he plans to
put the law to use as soon as it
become effective.

The bill was introduced at
McAuliffe’s request by Sen. Ed

last General Assembly session.
The law removes from
Georgia statute books a re

“utterly without redeeming
social value” before it can be
considered obscene. In place of
that language, the new law
specifies that material must
lack “serious literary, artistic,
political or scientific value”
before it can be labeled
obscene.

We could have...
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — The United States could
have saved Vietnam by declaring total war against the
Hanoi regime, Sam Ervin says.
But since “we’ve already poured in >l5O billion” and
there has been no national sentiment to fight a total war,
the former chairman of the Senate Watergate committee
added, the correct course for the United States now is to
pull out of Vietnam.
The North Carolina Democrat, in an address at the
University of Pennsylvania Monday, said, “If we had total
war against North Vietnam we would have won.”
Pays no attention
NEW YORK (UPI) — Liza Minnelli says she pays no
attention to the tendencies of the press and the public to
cast her in the image of her mother, Judy Garland.
“I ignore everything that’s written about her,” the
stage and film star said in an interview published today by
McCall’s magazine. “They tried to take her away from
me when she was alive and they’re still trying.... I’m me.
I’ve made it on my own.”
Names president
NEW YORK (UPI) - Former federal energy
administrator John C. Sawhill has been named president
of New York University, the nation’s largest private
school.
Sawhill, 38, will succeed James M. Hester, who resigned
after 13 years to become the first rector of the new United
Nations University in Japan.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) - A
suspended vice squad lieutenant
on the Augusta police force
went on trial Monday charged
with failing to report $94,000 in
income he allegedly received
from prostitutes and pimps
from 1968 to 1973.
In federal court testimony,

McClain said that during the

Asked why it was more in
1970, McClain replied that it
was a “better week.”
