Morrow blanks
GHS Bears, 3-0
The Griffin Bears dropped
their second game in a row here
yesterday. Morrow shutout
Griffin 3-0 on two-hit pitching. It
was the first time Griffin has
been shutout this season.
In addition to silent bats,
Griffin had a leaky defense,
making six errors.
Terry Baxter was the losing
pitcher. He gave up seven hits,

May 25
The seventh annual Moose-
VFW Golf Tournament is
scheduled for May 25 at the
Cabin Creek Golf Club.
The 18-hole tournament will
be handicapped on the point
system. A bogey is good for one
point, a par earns two, a birdie
counts four and an eagle counts
six points.
The entry fee is $12.50 per
golfer. The tournament will be
limited to the first 60 players to
register.
Bob Corley, who has served
as tournament director for
several years, urged all Moose
and VFW golfers to register as
soon as possible so partners and
tee times can be arranged. Tee
off time is 8:30 a.m.
The deadline for filing entry is
May 15. Tournament officials
expect the field to be completed
before then.
Prizes will be awarded the top
10 players.
Golfers may register with
members of the Tournament
Committee. They are Bobby
Imes, Reuben Newman,
Kimsey McKinley, Bill Jeffcoat
and Coot Corley will
also accept applications.

region. Newton County, the
team that beat Griffin last
Saturday, fell to R. E. Lee
yesterday in Covington.
Newton has a 5-1 subregion
record and Griffin is 4-1.
However, Coach Bobby Gene
Pierce has learned that region
records will count this year and
subregion records will be used

Kentucky’s Ed McCaw is the Southeastern Conference’s
most successful pitcher at this point in the season. McCaw
with an earned run average of just zero-point-86 has won
six games and lost one. He has recorded 31 strikeouts in
just over 52 innings.
Georgia’s Bill Ivie is just behind McCaw with an E-R-A
of one-point-11 and a won-loss record of 5-1. Other top
pitchers include Mike Park of Mississippi, Paul Stefan
and Pat Moock of Louisiana State, Drew Blocker of
Alabama, and Guy Hollingsworth of L.S.U.
Stabler
National Football League quarterback Ken Stabler will
serve as the honorary starter for the Winston 500 stock car
race at Talladega on May 5.
Stabler is a native of Foley and a graduate of the
University of Alabama.
Talladega President Bill France said, “It is only fitting
that one of Alabama’s greatest athletes should play an
important role in Alabama’s richest sporting event.”
Braves
A recent Los Angeles Dodgers decision to make room
for rookie outfielder Henry Cruz has paid early dividends.
Cruz was playing in only his fourth major league contest
last night in Atlanta when he came through with a double
in the ninth inning with two men out.
The hit drove home a run and allowed the Dodgers to
beat the Braves 2-1 in National League action.
Andy Messersmith was the winning pitcher while the
Braves’ Buzz Capra was the loser.

scoring champion Bob McAdoo
of Buffalo, who scored 50 points
against Washington Friday in a
playoff game, was named
winner Monday of the SIO,OOO
Seven Crowns of Sports pro
basketball award.
The award was the third
honor in recent days for the
league’s most valuable player,
but the only one that
carries cash value.
The award was based upon a
computer analysis which con
sidered field goal and foul
shooting, assists and steals,
rebounds and blocked shots and
minutes played.
