Portugal
socialists
in lead
LISBON (UPI) — Portugal’s
moderate Socialist and Popular
Democratic parties surged far
ahead of the politically power
ful Communists today in the
country’s first free elections in
49 years.
Returns from three-fourths of
polling places gave the Socialist
party 37 per cent of the vote,
the largest of any of the 12
parties in the election. The
Popular Democrats captured
more than 26 per cent.
The Communists, who occupy
key ministries in the military
backed cabinet, were a distant
third with 13 per cent.
The results confirmed this
month’s opinion polls which
predicted the two moderate
parties would get an overall
combined majority in the 247-
member constituent assembly
chosen in the election.
The assembly will draft a
constitution for a presidential
style government later this
year, but the country’s major
parties have agreed to let the
military regime remain in
power for at least three years.

‘burglar’
TUCSON, Ariz. (UPI) -
Citizens here either don’t know
a burglar when they see one, or
they don’t care, according to an
experiment run by Stanley
Benjamin, police crime preven
tion officer.
Benjamin said that to deter
mine how citizens react to
seeing a probable crime in
commission, he walked around
residential neighborhoods car
rying a television set He
walked through three neighbor
hoods, he said, loitered on
street comers and dawdled
through alleys.
“I planned to walk until I
was reported, but I got tired
and disgusted and saw no need
of going further,” he said,
complaining that people either
turned away when he walked
past or smiled and waved as
he loaded the television set into
a van.

Atlanta man
sentenced
in robbery
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) - An
Atlanta man was sentenced to
25 years in prison in U. S.
District Court Friday for his
part in a bank robbery at
Wrens last December that left
two people dead.
Julius Rawls, 22, was convict
ed earlier this week of taking
part in the robbery, but the
jury acquitted Rawls of charges
of taking two women hostages,
an accusation he had denied.
Three men held up the State
Bank of Wrens, in east-central
Georgia, Dec. 24 but police’
arrived on the scene as the
robbery was in progress, and in
a shootout, bank teller Linda
Lamb was killed.
The bandits fled with two
women as hostages. They were
stopped at a roadblock in
Greensboro, about 50 miles
away, where police killed Lee
Dorsey of Atlanta, freed the
hostages and recovered the
bank loot, some $26,000.
Larry Dorsey, who admitted
his part in the holdup and will
be sentenced later, testified for
the government against Rawls.
Giving Dignity To Man-
Funerals lie at the very innermost care of life’s
experiences. They represent grand and not trifling
moments. A Funeral arranged by Haistens gives reflection
to the basic philosophy of life and of our culture.
