Fighting near Saigon
SAIGON (UPI) — As Gen. Duong Van “Big” Minh
spoke today, after assuming the presidency of South
Vietnam from President Tran Van Huong, fighting raged
on the outskirts of Saigon only three miles from the
presidential palace. Minh said he wanted to have a
government of “mutual understanding and peace,” and
said he would seek a cease-fire and peace negotiations
with the Communists.
Avalanche kills one
STEVENSON, Wash. (UPI) - Sallie Hee, 28, of
Corvallis, Ore., died Sunday under an avalanche on Mt.
Hood as she was leading members of the Mazamas Club
down the mountain. And on Mt. St. Helens 50 rescuers
tried to reach five mountaineers lost on the north slope of
the mountain, but were forced to stop by bad weather. It
was not known if the hikers were dead or alive. They were
all students at the University of Puget Sound.
T-Cell cancer cure?
MOBILE, Ala. (UPI) — Dr. Herschel P. Bentley Jr.,
who heads a team of doctors at the University of South
Alabama Medical Center, said they may have discovered
the way to cure T-cell leukemia. T-cell leukemia is the
most common type of blood cell cancer in children. The
researchers said two drugs—BCG and thymosin —may
curb the action of the pituitary gland, which causes the
multiplication of the T-cells.
Portugal going socialist
LISBON (UPI) — Nearly complete returns from Por
tugal’s election have given the Socialist and Popular
Democratic parties a combined total of 64 per cent of the
vote. In spite of this, the left-wing military regime has
decided to go ahead with plans to turn the country into a
“revolutionary” Socialist state. The influential
Communists, who hold key cabinet posts, finished a poor
third in the election.
Vote undermines Wilson
LONDON (UPI) — A resounding vote by a ruling Labor
party conference over the weekend undermined Prime
Minister Harold Wilson’s authority. More than 1,000 dele
gates voted by a 2-1 margin against Britain’s continuing
membership in the Common Market. Wilson had
delivered a personal pro-market plea at the meeting.
There will be a national referendum on the question June
5, and Wilson says his government will abide by the
electorate’s decision.
Drug case made
Gerald Allen Maxwell, 22, of
Route One, Box 289, was
arrested by Griffin narcotics
agents when they found
marijuana in his possession.
Police said Maxwell was
riding in a van which was
