Ford wants fair trade repeal
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
President Ford today called for
a repeal of fair trade laws,
saying such a move would save
consumers $2 billion a year.
But he also said he opposes
legislation creating a new
consumer agency, saying it
would only add another layer of
expensive federal bureaucracy.
In a speech prepared for the
annual meeting of the Chamber
of Commerce of the United
States, Ford said regulation
costs consumers money be
cause it prevents competition
that can lower prices.

He said Congress should end
fair trade laws which allow
manufacturers to set minimum

Discount stores have been
trying for years to overturn
these state laws so they could
sell at lower prices.
“Federal law now permits

feel a federal consumer agency
would help.
“I have ordered action by the

have asked the Congress to

Trudeau heard singing
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (UPI) — Prime Minister
Pierre Trudeau, visiting the stone walls and thatched
roofs of interior Guyana, heard something a little familiar
—school children singing “Alouette.”
Trudeau, en route to Jamaica for a Commonwealth
conference, appeared moved by the singing in French, a
language the children do not know.
“It is a great pleasure and great sign of friendship to
find you had wanted to learn one of our songs to receive
me,” the Prime Minister said Sunday.
Guyana was the last stop in Trudeau’s visit to three
Caribbean nations, where he exchanged views on the
proposed new economic balance between developed and
developing states.
Mitchell in good spirits
NEW YORK (UPI) — Former Attorney General John
Mitchell is in good spirits, despite his legal problems,
according to Newsweek magazine.
“I’m more relaxed now than I have been in 10 years,”
Mitchell, 61, was quoted as saying.
Lately, Mitchell has been a frequent companion of Mary
Gore Dean, owner of the Fairfax Hotel in Washington.
“We’re just very good friends,” Mitchell said.
“That’s the exact truth,” Mrs. Dean added. “We are
very good friends.”
Wallace major factor
SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI) — Sen. Henry Jackson says
Alabama Gov. George Wallace must be considered a
factor in the race for the Democratic presidential
nomination.
He described Wallace during the weekend as “the
major problem for the Democratic party prior to the
convention.”
Jackson, who has already declared his presidential
ambitions, declined to say whether Wallace would be
acceptable as a Democratic running-mate.
“I’m not getting into any hypothetical situations,”
Jackson told reporters.

Investors
returning
to utilities
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI)
— Alabama Power Co. Presi
dent Joseph M. Farley believes
investors are returning to
utility stocks despite earnings
problems the utility companies
are suffering.
Farley said the earning of all
Southern Co. subisidiaries is
improving. The Southern Co.,
an Atlanta-based holding com
pany, is parent firm for
Alabama Power, Mississippi
Power, Georgia Power and Gulf
Power companies.
In an address to the Alabama
Bankers Association, Farley
said a $54 million rate increase
Alabama Power won in Janu
ary had boosted its earnings
and Georgia Power hoped to
have a decision this week on a
$305 million rate increase
request it filed.
Southern Co. subisidiaries
have been under fire in recent
months for trying to keep
earnings at pre-recession levels
when the recession was pinch
ing consumers.
Farley said only sound
earnings attract investors and
provide the long range solution
to meeting power demands.
