Carrollton Relays
Griffin High
ties for 2nd
The Griffin High track team
tied for second in group one (AA
and AAA schools) of the
Carrollton Relays Saturday in
Carrollton.
Southwest of Atlanta won the
division with 67 points. Griffin
and Therrell tied for second
with 36 points. St. Pius was
third, Columbus fourth and
LaGrange fifth.

The records fell in the mile
relay and mile run.
Ricky Williams, Jeff Ector,
Tommy Vaughn and Rufus
McDowell ran the mile relay in
3:41.6. The old record was
3:47.8.
McDowell set the new mile
record with a 4:49.4. The old
record was 4:54.1.
The varsity mile relay team
finished second with a 3:25, its
best time of the season.
Johnathan Nelms, Gregg Head,
Craig Nelms and Ralph Ray
competed.
Griffin placed third in five
events.
The distance medley team
picked up a third with a 10:55.
Gregg Head, Johnathan Nelms,
Tim Young and Jim Dunaway
competed. The medley consist
of an 880, 440, 1320 and mile.
Johnny Wilder, Johnny
Roberts, Willie Jordan and
Keith Mathis were third in the
440 relay.
Mathis was third in the 100
yard dash with a 10 flat.
Gary Hall placed third in the
120 high hurdles with a 15.4.
Griffin’s 880 relay team was
third with a 1:31.4. Johnny
Wilder, Willie Jordan, Russell
Miller and Keith Mathis ran the
four legs.
Bobby Floyd and Russell
Miller tied for fifth in the pole
vault.
Wayne Wilkins had a fifth in
the high jump.
Griffin’s sprint medley was
fifth. Kenneth Harps, Johnny
Roberts, Ralph Ray and Gary
Bartholomew competed.
Craig Nelms was fifth in the
triple jump.

Rufus McDowell, an eighth grader, set a Carrollton
Relays junior varsity mile record, Saturday. McDowell
ran the event in 4:49.1, breaking the old record of 4:54.1.
Smith, Carlisle
win Moose
golf tourney
Fred Smith, who electrified
the opening round of the first
annual Griffin Loyal Order of
Moose Golf Tournament by
shooting a hole-in-one Saturday,
and Sonny Carlisle captured
championship honors over the
weekend at Willow Wind
Country Club course. They shot
a 139.
Smith turned in “every
golfer’s dream” on the 14th, par
3 hole, a distance of 241 yards. It
was the first time he achieved
the feat.
The duo nosed out Jerry Neill
and Kimsey McKinley for the
crown by a stroke. The latter
earned the runnerup slot on a
playoff.
In first flight, Harold and
Tony Grubbs took top honors
with a 145, besting George
Sprayberry and Bill Jeffcoat by
two strokes.
David Hightower and Don
Robison paced the field in
Flight Two with a 147. Run
nerup honors went to John
Botaw and Randy Bertan.

The Griffin High golf team
will get in a few practice rounds
this week as they prepare for
the Region 6-AAA Tournament
scheduled May 7 at Flat Creek
Country Club in Peachtree City.
Six golfers from each school
will compete in the region with
the four lowest scores
counting on the team total.
The region medalist and team
champions will compete in the
state tournament.
trackmen will compete in meets
this week at Morrow and
Jackson. The Morrow meet is
Tuesday and the Jackson meet
is Friday.

tourney starts
The Region 6-AAA Tennis
Tournament began here today
with the nine teams playing for
berths in the state tournament.
Paula Westmoreland, the
defending singles champion,
drew a first round bye and will
play Forest Park’s entry in the
second round.
Portia Vaughn and Karen
Jackson, Griffin’s number one
doubles, also drew a first round
bye and will play the winner of
Tournament
deadline
Larry Neill, director of the
Griffin-Spalding Recreation
Department, today reminded
golfers that Friday is the dead
line for entering the two-man,
four-ball tournament at the
Municipal Golf Course.
The entry fee is $lO for the
two-day, 36 hole tournament.
The first 18 holes (Saturday)
is a qualifying round. Golfers
will be flighted for the second
round (Sunday).
