Working women
They still fare worse in Japan
Kyodo —
Copley News Service
TOKYO — Women’s lib not
withstanding, the lot of mid
dle-aged workingwomen in
Japan, is still worse and their
future bleaker than that of
workingmen of comparable
age.
The on-job discrimination
facing women is much more
serious for unmarried women
who have worked practically
all their lives and yet have lit
tle to show for it.
The woes faced by middle
aged workingwomen were
brought up anew when a
group of single women work
ing or who had worked in the
textile industry and related
fields met in Tokyo recently to
discuss their problems.
The meeting was the first of
a series for women textile
workers sponsored by the
Japan Federation of Textile
Workers Unions (Zensen
Domei).
The discussions centered on
wage differentiation between
men and women, earlier re
tirement age for women, in
equality of tax assessment,
housing loan preference for
men and the general sub
standard treatment accorded
women workers.
There are an estimated one
million single women in the
country whose ages range
from 45 to 55, all of them ei
ther in the retirement age
bracket or already retired
and working in another job.
A Tokyo metropolitan gov
ernment survey taken in No
vember, 1973, of 970 unmar
ried women between the ages
of 40 and 54 indicated that as

Women ask
Aging brings, wrinkles
By ELEANOR B.
RODGERSON, M.D.
Copley News Service
Q. What goes wrong with an
otherwise healthy woman
who now finds herself getting
ugly lines around her mouth?
What can be done to avoid
such aging?
A. Lines and wrinkles in the
skin come with aging. There
is loss of fatty and elastic tis
sue. Some women notice
these changes earlier than
others, some women retain
more pliable skin than others.
Perhaps facial expression,
the way a woman has held
her mouth throughout her
life, has something to do with
it.
When a woman approaches
the menopause (the last of
her menstrual periods) and
her estrogen level drops, we
know the soft stretchable mu
cus membrane of the vagina
atrophies, thins and shrinks.
Hormones are closely con
nected with the aging process
and artificial application of
estrogens, where indicated,
softens the tissue again.
Facial beauty aids have
also made use of estrogens,
but the results are not as dra
matic as in treatment of the
vagina and there are possible
undesirable side-effects and
contraindications for their
use in the first place.
There is a lot we do not
know about aging. I think we
have to accept its changes
gracefully and make the best
of it. There are compensa
tions for having gotten
through the hectic younger
years. Each decade has its
unique advantages and dis
advantages. We cannot turn
the pages back and we may
as well dwell upon the posi
tive aspects.
Q. My husband and I are
seriously thinking of getting
ourselves sterilized. We have
two children and want no
more. Which of us should do
it? Which would have the
fewer complications, or
would there be any complica
tion?
A. The first thing for you to
consider when it comes to
sterilization procedures, be
they blocking the Fallopian
tubes in the female, or the vas

the labor union set up wom

Women workers started re
ceiving less initial salary than

for women was fixed at 50
while it was 60 for male work

A 42-year-old woman, a col
lege graduate and former

administrative staff but her
monthly pay is only $250 even
with 20 hours overtime. She
earns an additional SIOO
monthly working part-time

is barely enough to maintain a

A matron at a bachelors’

permanency of the operation.
You should go into it with no
reservations and no plans to
try to get it undone sometime
in the future. Reuniting tubes
and vas have a high percent
age of failure. You have to
keep in mind that the time
may come when you want an
other child.
Then, when you fully real
ize that sterilization has to be
considered a permanent pro
cedure, you have to decide
which of you will have the op
eration. Vasectomy in the
male is simpler than closing
the tubes in the female
through the abdomen. How
ever, the female is the one
who carries the child and, if
sterilization is being done for
reasons of health, it should be
done on the one who needs
protecting.
