season.
“We won it all,” Coach
Tammy Weaver said this
morning.
It was a crucial victory for the
Bears, who are battling for a
berth in the 6-AAA playoffs that
begin Monday at North Clayton.
The extra-inning win gives
Griffin a 5-2 subregion record.
The Bears are 8-4 against region
competition.
“We won the team champion
ship and the singles and
doubles. I can’t remember a
Griffin team doing that. It’s got
to be a record,” she said.

with the win.
Griffin trailed 2-0 in the
seventh when Coach Bobby
Gene Pierce called on Steve
Harrison to pinch hit for Gary
Underwood.
Harrison drilled a two-run
homer to tie the score and send
five straight wins. He is now 5-

Lacy, who was three for five
at bat, leads both leagues with
a .432 batting average.
Lacy, a utility infielder, said,
“I knew I’d get an opportunity
to play, but Dave Lopes is close
to the best second baseman in
the game and I knew I wouldn’t
get to play much.”
Lacy has been playing second
while Lopes is in the outfield
filling in for injured Bill
Buckner. “Lacy said he ap
proached vice president Al
Campanis and told him he
wanted to play more.
“Campanis told me I was
very valuable to the club
regardless of how much I
play,” Lacy said. “It’s tough
being a utility player. You don’t
get to see hard pitches on a
regular scale.”
Lacy has hit 16 times out of
37 turns at bat and has played
in 13 of 37 games.
Doug Rau posted his first
career win over the Braves and
his first complete game of the
season.
“I really felt strong all the
way,” said Rau, 3-1. “My arm
feels much better than it did at
the same point last year. With
the great support we’re getting,
it’s easy to pitch real well.”
Manager Walt Alston also
agreed Rau performed well.
“I thought Rau was much
stronger this year, and this was
one of his better games. I’m
pleased he only walked one
man.”

He’s not a selfish player. He’s a

First baseman Steve Gravey,
who had an eight-game hitting
streak, failed to get contact in
four times at bat. He now has
failed to get a hit in only three
of the Dodgers’ 23 games.
While Gravey came up

OFFER TURNED DOWN
SANTOS, Brazil (UPI) —
Soccer superstar Pele, like tax
payers the world over, does not
like to work for nothing and he
figures nothing is what he’ll get
after the Brazilian and U.S. tax
authorities have taken their cut
of the $4 5 million the Cosmos

So Pele will stay in retire

Pele’s advisers told him he’d
be lucky to get $1 million of the
reported $4.5 million the Cos
mos offered him after the IRS
and Brazilian tax service took
their cut.
“It’s not worth it,” Pele said.
“Why should I subject myself
to all that (spending three
summers in America) to give
the money to others?”

Morrow, Jonesboro was
