state prison Thursday fired a
guard who criticized prisoners
on a work detail, touching off a
fracas during which an inmate
was wounded by a shotgun
blast from another guard.
The wounded inmate, John
Ross Sanders, 43, of Decatur,
was part of a maximum
security work detail of 98
inmates working in the prison’s
sugar cane field Wednesday
night when a group of inmates
jumped a guard who had
criticized them for not working
hard enough.
The detail was guarded by
two officers armed with
shotguns according to the
Department of Offender
Rehabilitation.
The other officer, standing
about 40 yards away, fired two
shots in the air and then fired a
third shot which struck and
injured Sanders.
The officer who fired the
shots called for help and the
inmates were taken back to the
prison for questioning by the
department’s intelligence divi
sion, which issued the report
leading to the guard’s firing.
Hopper said the guard who
shot was not fired because “he
was just doing his duty, doing
as he was told.”
Sarah Passmore, a spokes
woman for the DOR, said
neither guard could be iden
tified.
“The fact that he is
appealling the firing limits us
by law on the amount of
information we can give out
about the incident, such as the
guard’s name,” said Mrs.
Passmore. “No date has yet
been set for the hearing, but
when it is set we will notify the
news media and release more
information.”
She said the hearing would
probably be held at the state
prison.
Sanders was partially blinded
and paralyzed on one side by
the shotgun blast which struck
him at the base of his skull. He
was listed in stable condition
Thursday at Talmadge Memori
al Hospital in Augusta.
Sanders was serving a 10-
year sentence for rape and
incest.

Ulcer
cause
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - Would
you please tell me what causes
gastric ulcers? Is an operation
necessary to rid myself of
them? If not, is there some
medication one could take to
cure them or give substantial
relief?
I am afflicted with these ul
cers and am very nauseated in
the mornings. The only relief I
can get is to drink a glass of
water to induce vomiting. Any
help you can give me will be
greatly appreciated
DEAR READER - There
are two kinds of peptic ulcers,
those in the stomach, called
gastric ulcers, and the more
common type, duodenal ulcers.
The latter are in the first part
of the small intestine just out
side the stomach.
There are some minor
differences in symptoms
between ulcers in the
duodenum and those in the
stomach However, the symp
toms may overlap, so you can’t
tell for sure which you are
dealing with unless you have X
rays and other studies.
In our society only about one
in 10 ulcers is a gastric ulcer.
Incidentally, before duodenal
ulcers became so common in
our society gastric ulcers were
the more common, and they
tended to occur more often in
women than in men. Men are
much more prone to duodenal
ulcers than women.
The important point to es
tablish with a gastric ulcer is
whether it is really just an ulcer
or cancer of the stomach. That
question doesn’t arise if it is an
ulcer of the duodenum. For
tunately most gastric ulcers
are not cancer at all.
The simple gastric ulcer is
treated much the same way as
a duodenal ulcer. Although
there is usually less acid forma
tion with gastric ulcers, it is
still important to neutralize the
acid digestive juices Antacids
are used in both instances. If
you have a gastric ulcer you
should be receiving them. If
there is no acid at all in the
stomach, it is unlikely that you
have just a gastric ulcer.
Medicines to block the nerve
stimulation of the stomach that
induces formation of acid
digestive juices are useful in
both cases.
Os course, coffee, tea, colas
and any caffeine-containing
drinks are strictly out; that in
cludes chocolate in all forms
Cigarettes should be eliminated
entirely. There should be no
alcohol consumption in any
form. For more information
about managing peptic ulcers
write to me in care of this
newspaper at P.O. Box 1551,
Radio City Station, New York,
N.Y. 10019 and ask for my
report on ulcers. Send a long,
self-addressed stamped
envelope and 50 cents to cover
costs.
You should be cautious about
using any medicines your doc
tor hasn't prescribed for you.
There is a fairly high incidence
of gastric ulcers in Australian
women. This is believed to be
associated with their frequent
habit of taking aspirin and
aspirin-containing medicines
for tension headaches. This
should tell you something about
the inadvisability of using these
medicines if you have a gastric
ulcer.
Every gastric ulcer deserves
a careful medical evaluation. It
is important that the doctor
follow the case regularly to be
certain the ulcer is responding
to medical management. Most
will respond adequately and
make it unnecessary to have
surgery. Your letter makes me
wonder if you are seeing a doc
tor regularly or not. If you
aren’t I’d advise getting
medical care as early as possi
ble.

VC take over unions
Hie leader of the South Vietnamese Confederation of
Labor, was referred today by the ruling Viet Cong as
“traitor Tran Quoc Buu.” They made no mention of his
whereabouts. The VC took over the umbrella organization
for South Vietnam’s unions and said it would be replaced
by a liberation trade union. All members of the old
organization were ordered to report within 24 hours. In a
statement broadcast by Peking’s New China News Agen
cy, the Viet Cong said warships, cargo ships, cargo planes
and jet fighters were taken to neighboring countries by
the Saigon puppet administration. It said the VC has “the
right to recover all property...” However, in Washington
Defense Secretary Schlesinger said the United States
“retains ultimate title” to South Vietnamese warplanes.
Await refugees
ARANYAPRATHET, Thailand (UPI) — The convoy
carrying the first of 610 foreigners out of Cambodia have
not arrived at the Thai border as yet, and ’the French
ambassador is expected to meet with Khmer Rouge
officials this afternoon to determine what has happened.
The refugees were trapped in Phnom Penh when the city
fell two weeks ago. Some reports said the vehicles in the
refugee convoy may have run out of fuel. Red Cross
doctors and French diplomats planned to take the
refugees, many reported to be in “deplorable health,” the
170 miles to Bangkok in airconditioned buses.
Evacuation completed
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The evacuation of Vietnamese
refugees ended today and Navy rescue ships headed out
into the Pacific. Officials, in announcing that at least
18,000 refugees had been evacuated, left open the chance
more seaborne stragglers might be picked up off the
Vietnamese coast. One official said it will still up in the air
where the ships will go or where the refugees will be
unloaded.
Hospital crisis
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - A group of some 200
anesthesiologists allowed their group malpractice
insurance to lapse Thursday in protest of higher rates,
precipitating a crisis in eight northern California county
hospitals. The largest obstetrics unit in San Francisco was
shut down, hospital admissions were reduced to just those
considered most necessary, the most critical patients
were transferred to unaffected hospitals and layoffs and a
four-day work week were cited in some hospitals. Local
medical societies set up emergency telephone centers to
handle referrals for those in dire need.

Talmadge raps Ford
for farm bill veto
WASHINGTON (UPI) — Sen.
Herman Talmadge said Thurs
day President Ford’s veto of
legislation to increase farm
price supports may have been
based on “exaggerated cost
estimates” submitted by
Agriculture Secretary Earl
Butz.
“The President’s veto is a
serious blunder,” said Talmad
ge, D-Ga., in a statement. “He
got bad advice from poor
advisors who used faulty logic
to reach a wrongheaded conclu
sion.”
Talmadge disputed Ford’s
claim that the bill would have
proven costly to consumers and
taxpayers. He said the Presi
dent’s decision may have been
based on Butz’ “exaggerated
cost estimates —figures some
10 times higher than the real
cost of the bill.”
“I believe that the President
has made a mistake to listen to
Secretary Butz and not to the
American farmer,” said
Talmadge. “However, it should
be pointed out that Secretary
Butz’ early outspoken opposi-
