Stassen wins round
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (UPI) — Harold Stassen, the
perennial losing candidate for the Republican presidential
nomination, has won a victory in court.
It was disclosed Thursday that Stassen won dismissal
this week of a speeding ticket. Stassen was arrested six
months ago for allegedly doing 82 miles an hour on an
interstate highway.
Stassen told Judge Phil Bayt he was innocent of the
charge.
“In fact, I’ve come all the way from Philadelphia to
plead my innocence in this case. I am an attorney and will
defend myself,’’ Stassen told the judge.
The arresting state police officer was not in court. A
check at his home determined he was ill and could not
appear in court.
Stassen, called the “boy wonder” for being elected
governor of Minnesota in 1938 at age 30, thanked everyone
and left quietly.
To honor commitments
LONDON (UPI) — U.S. Ambassador to Britain Elliott
Richardson says America intends to honor its
commitments abroad.
“It is essential that we communicate to our friends and
to our possible antagonists that there is no slackening in
America’s determination to honor its commitments,” he
said Thursday in an interview on the BBC.
“We do not have the margin of superior military and
economic strength we had 10 or 20 years ago,” he said.
“But there is a persistent awareness that our own security
depends on our willingness to maintain a mutual security
relationship with other countries.”
Nessen: bullet proof
WASHINGTON (UPI) — White House Press Secretary
Ron Nessen showed off a new piece of attire as his regular
news briefing Thursday. He wore a bullet-proof vest.
Nessen said the vest was designed to be lightweight and
withstand bullets from .38-caliber pistols or smaller
caliber gunfire.
“Unfortunately,” he said, “they just shrugged their
shoulders when asked how it would stand up under the fire
of reporters questions.”
Nessen, still wearing the vest, then invited reporters to
ask their questions.
“Fire away,” he said.
