Catfish wins again
Aaron breaks
Ruth record
By United Press International
For Henry Aaron, the last
ghost is gone, and for Catfish
Hunter, so too is the $3 million
monkey on his back.
Aaron, who last year sup
planted Babe Ruth as base
ball’s all-time home run king,
surpassed The Babe’s last great
slugging record Thursday by
driving in a pair of runs in the
Milwaukee Brewers’ 17-3 rout
of the Detroit Tigers. That gave

ace, Jim Palmer.
“The name Babe Ruth has
been haunting me for so long ...
too long,” said Aaron after
collecting four hits and raising
his early-season average 61
points to .218. “I’m just glad
it’s over with. This is a good
ballclub. I’m just glad to be
here next to so many good
looking young kids like Robin
Yount.”
Yount, the Brewers’ 19-year
old phenom shortstop, “lowe
red” his average to .381 with
two hits in four at-bats
Thursday but drove in four
runs just the same with a home
run and double. Darrell Porter
also had a two-run homer for
the Brewers, who scored five
runs in fifth and seventh
innings and four runs in the
eighth.
“I feel I’m in the same 25-win
groove as last year,” said the
AL Cy Young Award-winner
Hunter, who gave the Yankees
some anxious moments in his
first few shaky starts this year.
“The key to the game was the
first inning. If you give Palmer
the lead, he keeps throwing
strikes at you.”
After bailing himself out of a
two-on and one-out situation in
the first, Hunter was staked to
a two-run homer by Thurman
Munson in the fourth and a
three-run double by Ron Blom
berg in the sixth.

was postponed in the National

League, Texas shaded the
Chicago White Sox, 2-1, Boston
edged Cleveland, 7-6, and
Kansas City outlasted Califor

Foolish Pleasure
is Derby favorite
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPI) -
Jacinto Vasquez is sitting
pretty.
That’s because Vasquez is
getting paid to sit atop a couple
of pretty good 3-year olds.
For instance, take Saturday’s
101st Kentucky Derby. Vasquez
is favored to do just that.
Vasquez’ mount, Foolish
Pleasure, is a 9-5 early line
favorite to get to the wire first
in the $125,000 added classic.
With 15 horses scheduled to
start, that works out to a
$262,100 purse with a $209,600
winners share.
If Foolish Pleasure should
win, the standard 10 per cent
jockey’s fee comes to the
rather pleasing figure of
$20,960.
So Vasquez flew into Louis
ville Wednesday night to ride
Foolish Pleasure in his final
workout before Saturday’s
David Hammond singled for
Forrer.
Mark Gilreath was Thomas
Packers’ winning pitcher in
relief. Robert Page started and
Jim Cody followed him to the
mound. Gilreath took over for
Cody.
Gilreath hit two singles. Dana
Williams doubled and Bob
Smith, Robert Page and Rob
Weeks singled.
Mark Pfrogner was Imperial
Homes’ losing pitcher in relief
of Doug Pound.
Henry Miller and Ricky
Tucker hit a double and single.
Keith Kelsey singled.
Jeff English hit a home run
and two singles for Dundee.
Kenneth English and Robert

Flyers stop Islanders
By United Press International
The Philadelphia Flyers
haven’t lost for so long—nearly
two months now—they can be
excused for thinking all they
have to do to win is throw their
sticks out on the ice.
But Thursday night, they
didn’t even need the sticks.
Philadelphia beat the New
York Islanders," 5-4, on an
overtime goal by Bobby Clarke
that, Clarke admitted, went in
off his skate and never touched
his stick.
Depending on your point of
view, Clarke either kicked it in,
soccer style, which is illegal, or
innocently deflected it.
The Islanders, naturally,
didn’t think it was too innocent.
“I saw him with his stick
raised and saw him kick the
puck into the net,” said Denis
Potvin, the New York defen
seman, who had a pretty good

just four feet away.
“I didn’t kick it in,”
protested Clarke. “It hit my
skate and went in.”
Obviously, describing the
winning goal was a matter of
semantics, but whatever, it was
good enough to give the
defending champion Flyers a 2-
0 lead over the Islanders in
their Stanley Cup semifinal and
extend their current unbeaten
streak to 20—18 victories and
two ties—since March 8.
The game was played at
Philadelphia and the winning
goal came at 2:56 of sudden
death.
In the other NHL semifinal,
Montreal got a three-goal hat
trick from Guy Lafleur and
routed Buffalo, 7-0, to cut the
Sabres’ lead in the series to 2-1.
