Cold winter wouldn’t
cause gas shortage
ATLANTA (UPI) - An
Atlanta Gas Co. spokesman
said Friday that a cold winter
would not cause natural gas
shortages in Georgia.
“We have greatly expanded
our reserve facilities for the
very cold weather and have a
good back-up system for
winter,” he said.
The spokesman said a recent
prediction by Secretary of
Commerce Rogers C.B. Morton
that the East Coast could be
faced shortages this winter,
would not apply to Georgia.
“For the nation as a whole,
the overall cutbacks are likely
to be 40 per cent greater than
last winter among such users, ”
the Secretary said Friday in
Charlotte, N.C. “It is even
possible that an unusually cold
winter could result in curtail-

The spokesman for the
company that serves most of
the state said “Morton said how
bad the weather is going to be.
Last winter was normal and
our projections take into
account cold weather and even
with that we anticipate no
shortage for our residential and

He said industrial customers
would, as in the past, be
supplied only after residential
areas have been in case of any
shortage.
The spokesman said the
company has no plans for a
rate increase this winter except
for a small one authorized by
the Fedreral Trade Commission
for exploration for new gas
supplies, expected to be passed
on to the consumer.

FBI arrests ex-teller
in Savannah bank case
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) -
The FBI arrested in Baltimore
Friday the former bank teller
wanted for robbing a Savannah
bank, after nearly a year of
investigating her claim that
taking the money was justified.
Leon Gaskill, head of the
FBl’s regional office here, said
Althea Brown, 25, was arrested
Friday morning in connection
with the July 1, 1974 robbery of
a Citizens and Southern bank
here.
He said a warrant for arrest
was issued when her story that
she took the money to pay
ransom for the return of her
kidnaped mother was disproven
by investigators.
The spokesman said the teller
“was a suspect from the start”
but it was not until June 5 that
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lamar
Walter filed charges against
her and a warrant for her
arrest was issued.
An FBI spokesman said Miss
Brown, a teller at the bank,
told police she took the
undisclosed sum of money after
a man came into the bank and
passed her the note.
An investigation determined
the note she turned over to
police was bogus, the spokes
man said.

Miss Brown allegedly ran out
of the bank with the cash and
called police 40 minutes later.
The spokesman said Miss
Brown’s story was “fully
investigated” and it was
determined that “there was no
such man” as she described.
Gaskill said Miss Brown
resigned from the bank after
the robbery and left Georgia.
