Bartkowski
hasn’t signed
ATLANTA (UPI) - All-
America quarterback Steve
Bartkowski is flying to Atlanta
to try to negotiate a contract
with the Atlanta Falcons, a
team spokesman said Friday,
It was reported that the
Falcons had offered Bartkowski
a $625,000 four-year contract to
be signed today at Atlanta
Stadium.
But a team spokesman said
the report was in error.
“We are optimistic that we
can reach an agreement with
Bartkowski, but, at the mo
ment, nothing has been firmed
up,” said the spokesman. “It is

our hope that this will be done

al manager) Pat Peppier meets
with Bartkowski and his attor
ney, Leigh Steinberg.”
Bartkowski was a University
of California quarterback and
the nation’s leading college
passer last season.
Steinberg was quoted from
Los Angeles as saying that
Bartkowski had agreed to
terms and was flying to Atlanta
to sign a contract that would
make him the highest paid
rookie in National Football
Texas and South Carolina could
very well foster a Jack and the
Giant Killer atmosphere as the
Gamecocks seek to avenge a
17-6 thrashing at the hands of
the Longhorns earlier this
week.
That Texas victory Thursday
night knocked South Carolina
from the ranks of the unbeaten
in the series and into Friday
night’s duel with Arizona State
which the Gamecocks won 4-1
during a 9th-inning rally.
South Carolina Coach Bobby
Richardson will send standout
Earl Bass, 17-0, against Texas’
Rich Wortham, who goes into
the match at 14-1 on the season.
Texas, which placed fourth in
the series last year, also goes
into tonight’s outing at 2-1 after
suffering a loss to Arizona State
earlier. This is the first year
South Carolina, which captured
the Atlantic regional title, has
sent a team to the series, which
began in 1947.
Arizona State’s Friday night
loss to the Gamecocks was
particularly heartbreaking for
pitcher Greg Cochran, who was
League history.
The Falcons made Bartkow
ski their first choice in the last
college draft but contract
negotiations appeared to bog
down after Steinberg claimed
Bartkowski was also talking
with the World Football Lea
gue.
Steinberg was quoted Friday
as saying that Bartkowski was
always interested in Atlanta but
had felt obligated to listen to
the WFL because of the amount
of money that league had
allegedly been offering.
bounced off the mound after
yielding three of South Caroli
na’s four 9th-inning runs.
Cochran went into the game
14-0 on the season and recorded
10 strikeouts before yielding
three Gamecock runs.

SOMETHING FROM NOTHING!!! |
Impossible) Nonesenseil Illogical!Il Common sense
tells us you don't get something from nothing. A thing Is .
always itself, neither can we become what we are not.
Yet, cutting through the world's logic we have the
Gospel, a NEW logic which fractures the old, making a
scandal of things.
The Gospel proclaims a thing becomes what it isn't j
when God wills it, as in creation from nothing. Like-wise,
in Jesus Christ, we see weakness become strength. By His
poverty, we are made rich. Through His suffering, He
gives us peace. From His sorrlw, we have |oy. Through
His despair, we see hope. In His death, we receive the Gift
of Life, NOW. Yes, It's weird logicll A SCANDALII Buta •
joy and reality which we SHARE together.
If you're nothing, there's hope. As a famous reformer •
once said, ''God created the world out of nothing. As long
as you are not yet nothing, God cannot make something of I
you."
