intended to rob the store when
he left her in a car she was
riding in last December.
Armour had already been
found guilty of the December
7th murder of Pat Montgomery
during an armed robbery
attempt at his store.
A life-long friend of Mrs.
Stephens testified Monday, with
immunity from prosecution,
that she unwittingly drove the
get-away car on Mrs.-Stephen’s
request.
Testimony from another wit
ness said that Mrs. Stephens
talked about robbing the store
beforehand and mentioned the
possibility of murdering Mont
gomery.
Former bookkeeper indicted

could go to prison for up to 20
years if convicted of the two
counts of theft by taking
1433 GEORGIA HIGHWAY 16 - WEST, GRIFFIN, GA.
returned by the Fulton County
Grand Jury.
Mrs. Dettmering was charged
with stealing $21,765 from the
office’s credit union and divert
ing $19,451.37 from the account
of the Occupational Certifica
tion Division of the Archives
and History Division.
Fulton County Dist. Attny.

mering’s attorney told him she
would surrender later this week
and post SIO,OOO bond.

Dettmering was charged with
stealing $41,226, more than
$70,000 was unaccounted for
after she resigned from the
Secretary of State’s offiice in

Ask Dick Kleiner
Dinah-scope
By Dick Kleiner
DEAR DICK: Please tell me why Dinah Shore never shows her
legs, why she never says anything about her parents, or children,
or grandchildren. — FREDA JONES, Noblesville, Ind.
I’m not a regular viewer of Dinah’s show. Her spokesman tells
me she is more comfortable in pants because she sits down a lot.
But, he adds, she has often worn dresses and shown that much of
her legs. As for her family, she has often mentioned her mother’s
athletic ability, how her father talked her into going to college
and, also, shown pictures of her one grandchild.
DEAR DICK: I’m having an argument with my husband about
a star. A picture called “Bells Are Ringing,” with the late Judy
Holliday, was made in the ’sos and there was an actress who
played Judy’s boss. My husband says that was Maureen
Stapleton. I don’t think so. — VEE WOODWARD, El Cajon, Calif.
Your husband is suffering from a common disease,
Stapletonitis. The symptoms are mixing up actresses named
Stapleton. It was Jean, not Maureen, who played Judy’s aunt who
ran the telephone service in “Bells Are Ringing.”
DEAR DICK: Whatever happened to the picture, “Maine,”
with Lucy in it? Never see it advertised anywhere and never read
anything about why it has never shown locally. — E.V.
DOUCETTE, Plaistow, N.H.
Whatever happened to “Marne” was what it deserved. It came
and went pretty quickly in most cities, because it wasn’t very
good. Chances are it never was shown in your area, or, if it was, it
came and went overnight.
DEAR DICK: My friend says John Wayne is dead. I say he is
still alive. Tell me who is right. — JO ANN MCLAIN,
Robertsdale, Ala.
DEAR DICK: Is it true that Chastity Bono was killed in an air
plane crash last year? My friend says she was and I say she
wasn’t. - CINDY BURKETT, Brewton, Ala.
Where do you Alabama girls get your ghoulish friends? In both
cases, pooh on the friends — they’re wrong. Duke Wayne and
Chastity Bono are still alive and well.
DEAR DICK: Could you please tell me if Nicole Travis on The
Edge of Night is coming back on the show and, if not, why she
left? — A READER, Osceola, Ark.
That’s what Maeve McGuire, the actress who played the part of
Nicole Travis, would like to know, too. The script had Nicole fall
off a yacht and she hasn’t been heard from since. Miss McGuire
has found a new job, however. She’ll be in next fall’s new show,
Beacon Hill.
DEAR DICK: Henry Fonda was on the Merv Griffin Show
recently and read a piece written by Thomas Jefferson about the
advantages of loving an older woman. Can you tell me which of
Jefferson’s books it was taken from? — 8.G.K., Ventura, Calif.
Fonda tells me the piece came from Benjamin Franklin, not
Jefferson. And it was culled from various Franklin works and put
together by a writer for Fonda. He has used it several times
before.
DEAR DICK: Some friends and I would like to find out what
kind of car Colombo drives on that show, and what year it is. —
P. 8., Menominee, Mich.
That little beauty is a ’57 Peugeot, Model 403.
DEAR DICK: lam a great fan of The Hagers on Hee-Haw. Do
they make records? Do they have any tapes out? I have checked
in our local stores for records and tapes but haven’t been able to
come up with any. — ESTHER E. STAVER, Jersey Shore, Pa.
Jim and John, the Hager twins, have their first album just be
ing released on the Elektra label. Your local stores should have it
by now, or very soon.
DEAR DICK: My sister says that Elton John has a $40,000
Monopoly game. Is this true? Also, what was his first song and
what year did it come out? — WALLY LONG, Eight-Mile, Ala.
Elton is given to excesses but none of his representatives here
have ever heard of a $40,000 Monopoly game. He is they tell me,
a backgammon addict and has several expensive backgammon
sets. And he collects antiques. His first record was a single on the
Uni label, “Levon,” which was released in 1971.
DEAR DICK: Does Paul Lynde have a sister or close relative
in show business? I don’t know this woman’s name but she looks
and acts so much like him, I’d swear they’re twins. - GAYLE
STEVENER, Fultonville, N.Y. .
You’re probably thinking of Alice Ghostley. Ever since they
made their Broadway debuts together, in “New Faces of 52
people have been marveling over the resemblance. They look
alike and sound alike but are not related. Curiously, they are
currently working together in a stock company show, Stop,
Thief, Stop! ! M Paul has two sisters. Neither is in show business.
Escapee
captured
ATLANTA (UPI) - Fulton
County police said Tuesday that
they had captured an escaped
prisoner missing since 1971
from the Pulaski County
Correctional Institute.
Capt. L.L. Lanier said 36-
year-old Elliott Brrown was
picked up by four deputies on a
tip early Tuesday morning.
A state corrections depart
ment spokesman said Brown
was serving a 12-year sentence
for burglary, auto larceny and
escape charges brought in
Fulton County, when he es
caped on November 4,1971.
EFFICIENCY STRESSED
WASHINGTON (UPI) —
President Ford has told 50 of
the nation’s top defense offi
cials to make efficient use of
the equipment and the three
million persons assigned to the
Defense Department.
In a visit to the Pentagon
Tuesday, Ford met privately
for 15 minutes with Defense
Secretary James R. Schlesinger
and spent an hour in a closed
meeting with the defense
leaders.
White House spokesman Wil
liam Greener said the discus
sion was general, but Ford
opened the meeting by saying,
“Efficient management of these
people and resources makes all
of us feel more secure.”
The Defense Department had
an $87.1 billion budget in the
fiscal year that ended June 30
and has requested $94 billion in
fiscal 1976.
Schlesinger told Ford he had
instructed the armed services
to “find waste and correct it”
— saying each time a
noncombat job is eliminated,
combat personnel can be
increased by one.
