Farewell to
spaghetti sauce
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY - How can I get spaghetti sauce off shiny
vinyl wallpaperlt spattered on while cooking and even got
on the plastic seat of baby's high chair. I tried cleansing
powder and water but that did nothing for it. — MRS S.K
DEAR MRS.S.K. — What a blessing baby was not in the
chair when the sauce was cooking. Detergent suds should
have removed it if you had used them immediately.
Tomato and tomato catsup stains on clothing are ordinarily
removed by being dampened and then applying glycerin.
This is left on half an hour or so and then removed with
warm or hot suds. On the wall paper you might try a paste
of fuller’s earth (bought at the drug store and benzine or
other dry cleaning fluid. Apply, let dry and brush off. If you
know the brand name of your paper your dealer may have
some manufacturer’s instructions. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is to see someone, often a
young parent, dragging or lifting a small child by one arm I
wonder how that person would like lifting his own weight by one
arm
In these days of making everypenny count we could go back to
some of the things we did in the past. We used old undershirts for
dust rags and even dish cloths, pot holders were made from dis
cards or anything that could be padded Also, a plastic bleach bot
tle can have the top cut off to make a funnel and the bottom would
make a paper napkin holder — BONNIE.
DEAR POLLY — While watching my weight I found it helpful
to brush my teeth immediately after any meal or snacks as the
fresh clean taste in my mouth discouraged further nibbling. Now
that I also have to cut down on coffee, tea and cola drinks I find
the same tactic helpful. When tempted to refill my cup I brush
my teeth instead This really works for me and, of course, I am
sure one’s dentist would heartily approve. — DONNA.
DEAR POLLY — When my little car was new I decided I was
not going to be emptying someone else’s ashes from the ash tray.
As a non-smoker I am not very tolerant of cigarettee smoke. I
bought a bunch of tiny plastic flowers, arranged them in the ash
tray. Everyone notices them. My smoking friends think twice
before lighting up and many times refrain from smoking at all, so
the little flowers have really paid off for me. — MARY H.

Doctor explains
<carcinoma insitu’
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - Would
you explain carcinoma insitu?
Does intercourse have any
bearing on its occurrence?
Do you realize how many
women have had hysterec
tdmies for one reason or
another? What possible good is
a Pap smear after a complete
hysterectomy? Other than an
office fee! You doctors beg
women to have the Pap smear,
but tell nothing beyond that. I’ll
look for your answer in the
paper, but if it’s there I’ll sure
ly have a cardiac arrest.
DEAR READER - A copy of
my answer in the column is sent
to the person who wrote the
original letter. If you had in
cluded your address on your
letter you could have had your
cardiac arrest long before the
column appeared in the paper.
Carcinoma insitu is a term
for a cancerous change of the
surface of the cervix. By
analogy, it is something like
skin cancer. It may be localized
on the surface of the cervix or
at the cervical canal.
The term is not used for in
vasive cancer. The extent of the
cancer is limited to the surface
areas and does not involve
deeper tissues. Actually there
is a graduation of changes seen
in the cells of the cervix from
normal ones to those that show
some changes that are not con
sidered as cancer cells (called
dysplasia), to cells of car
cinoma insitu, and finally to
those of invasive cancer of the
cervix involving the deeper
structures.
Some authorities think car
cinoma insitu may progress to
invasive cancer of the cervix.
Adherents to this school believe
its presence calls for a com
plete hysterectomy to prevent
cancer of the cervix and its
complications.
Carcinoma insitu, like some
skin cancers, may change slow
ly. if at all. For this reason
some physicians prefer to treat
the problem by local removal of
the abnormal cells without a
complete hysterectomy.
The choice of treatment may
depend upon the woman s age
and if she wants to have more
children or not. Since it is a
slow process, there is room for
allowing a women to continue
having her desired family, if
she remains under careful
supervision.
There are probably many fac
tors in the occurrence of car
cinoma insitu. but it is true that
it occurs more often in women
who engage in sexual relations
early in life and marry early.
More recent studies suggest
that multiple sexual partners
and early age of onset of inter
course are factors that increase
its incidence. Now I hasten to
point out that these are group
studies. This does not mean
that every woman who has or
has had carcinoma insitu has
been sexually active at an early
age. There are always many ex
ceptions to the general trend
A Pap smear should be done
certainly if the cervix is left in
place. Usually these days the
entire uterus, with the cervix,
is removed during a hysterec
tomy. Rarely there could be
changes in the vaginal wall.
Some carcinomas insitu extend
over the surface of the vagina,
and certainly there would be a
case for following these. Pap
smears are also used by some
doctors as an opportunity to
study the cells to judge the
woman s hormone balance.
Send you questions to Dr.
Lamb, in care of this
newspaper, P.O Box 1551.
