Truck mishap kills three
TAZEWELL, Ga. (UPI) — A flatbed truck bringing
farm workers in from the fields overturned on a sharp
curve near Tazewell Thursday, crushing three young
passengers and injuring 16 others.
The Georgia State Patrol identified the dead as Albert
Kelly, 19, Charlie Joe Small, 15, and Paul M. Glover, 10,
all of Mauk.
Investigators said the farm workers had been picking
peas in Marion County fields all day.
Truck driver O. L. Garmon, 41, of Mauk was charged
with driving too fast for conditions. The Patrol said he was
below the 55 mile-an-hour speed limit, but still going too
fast for the weight of the truck and angle of the curve.
Another passenger, Martha Renee Small, 35, was
hospitalized in fair condition. The other 15 injured farm
workers were treated and released at Marion Memorial
Hospital.
Industry panel on road
ATLANTA (UPI) — The House Industry Committee is
going on the road next week to tell local businessmen how
the state can help them and to boost the economy at the
same time.
Chairman Gerald Horton, DAtlanta, said Thursday the
first such session would be held at Brunswick Monday and
Tuesday.
Horton said that since the legislature had cut the state’s
budget because revenue growth had not been as
anticipated, the committee felt “it must turn its attention
to increasing jobs and development in the state and,
thereby, increase revenue for state services.”
“Our purpose is to identify ways that state government
may encourage and assist the Georgia economy and
individual businesses to grow.”
Two indicted in deaths
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) — A Chatham County grand
jury has indicted two men on murder charges in the
deaths of their wives.
Frederick Falkenberry, 50, was accused of smothering
his wife, Evelyn, 48, with a couch pillow. Police said he
called officers to his home and reported the crime June 15.
Paul J. Jefferson, 45, was indicted in the fatal shooting
of his wife, Dorothy, 44. Mrs. Jefferson was shot in the
head June 15 and died last Sunday.
Both men are being held without bail in the county
prison.
Toll road issues back
ATLANTA (UPI) — The intown highway issue, beaten
down once by citizen opposition, has appeared again in
Atlanta — this time headed in another direction.
A group backing a proposed toll road from the
intersection of Lenox Road and heavilytrafficked 1-85
north to Georgia 400 unveiled its plans Thursday for the
project.
The backers plan to campaign for two months in hopes
of convincing the Atlanta Regional Commission of the
need to include the tollway in its plans for metropolitan
development.
Another planned highway, 1485, which would have
sliced through a residential area of northeast Atlanta and
tied into 1-85 also, was finally killed by strong opposition
from neighborhoods which would have been affected.
Shopping mall sold
ATLANTA (UPI) — Phipps Plaza Shopping Mall in
suburban Atlanta has been purchased by Wachovia Bank
and Trust Co. of Winston-Salem, N. C., it was announced
Thursday.
Wachovia has signed a contract to buy the mall, the first
twin-level enclosed shopping center in Atlanta when it
opened in 1968, for between $7.5 million and $8 million.
The bank will be buying mall space leased to 49 stores
but the purchase will not include that leased to the two
largest stores, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue,
which was previously sold to another group.
The mall is being purchased by Wachovia as an
investment for the Southern Bell Telephone pension fund
which the bank administers as trustee.

HISTORY OF FAITH TEMPLE
In the fall of 1960 a small group of people met in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Hartford Barrow under the
leadership of Rev. Weldon Martin and began what is now
Faith Temple Assembly of God.
They moved from the home to McDonald’s Funeral
Home, to a store building and to a tent on the premises of
the present location.
In 1961 they called the Rev. & Mrs. Clarence Jackson,
who lead them in the building of the Educational Building
which served as a sanctuary about fourteen years. The
Lord worked greatly under the ministry of the Jacksons.
On July 14, 1974 the church called the Rev. and Mrs. E.
P. Pruett. Shortly thereafter the Rev. & Mrs. Garold
Nicholls joined with them as Assistant Pastors. The
growth spiritually and numerically has been remarkable.
The Sunday School attendance has increased over 100
percent. Rev. Pruett is well known in this area having
built and pastored First Assembly for a number of years.
Pastor Pruett is a strong Sunday School man. (His Men’s
Bible Class was attended by well over 100.) He has
successfully lead congregations in building programs
which he has done at Faith Temple. On July 20 the lovely
and beautiful sanctuary will be dedicated-a culmination
of about three months labor under his supervision.
The Public has a cordial invitation to attend the services
and worship with the friendly folk at Faith Temple.
