Joe Torre’s eighth inning homer broke a 3-3 tie to give
the New York Mets a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves
at New York last night.
Torre led off the inning with his third homer of the year
off losing pitcher Tom House, now 3-3, who hadn’t given up
a run in 28 consecutive innings.
The Braves had led 3-0 earlier paced by Clarence
Gaston’s homer and double.
Gaston led off the fourth inning with his sixth homer of
the year and in the sixth inning — following Earl
Williams’ leadoff double, cracked his own two base hit,
driving in Williams for Atlanta’s second run.
Braves pitcher Phil Niekro drove in the Braves’ third
run on a bunt, scoring Larvel Blanks.
A leadoff single by New York’s Ed Kranepool and back
to-back homers by Rusty Staub and Dave Kingman dead
locked the score at 3-3 in the sixth.
Rick Baldwin, the third Mets’ pitcher, hurled the final
three innings to pick up the victory.
Sandeman
Atlanta Falcon veteran defensive tackle Bill Sandeman
is retiring from professional football because of injuries.
That announcement came form the Atlanta Falcon’s
yesterday.
In a joint announcement made by Falcon president
Frank Wall and Coach Marion Campbell — Sandeman
was praised for his service to the Falcons as a defensive
tackle.
The 6-foot-6, 260 pound tackle did not play during the
entire 1974 season because of some back surgery he had
earlier in the year.
Campbell said he is “disappointed” that the 10-year
veteran of professional football decided to retire. He spent
eight year’s with the Falcons.
Sandeman was claimed by the Falcons on waivers from
New Orleans in early 1967.
Track
West Germany, Africa and the United States open a two
day triangular track meet at Raleigh, N.C. today.
American Coach Ted Hayden predicts there will be “15
to 20 events where the competition will be very close” in
the meet.
One of the events promising strong competition is the
women’s high jump when Joni Huntley of the U.S. faces
West Germany’s reigning Olympic champion Ulrike
Meyfarth.
Another promising event however, failed to materialize.
Frank Shorter, with a 27.56 under his belt already in the
10,000 meters said late yesterday he is unable to attend the
meet.
Shorter had been scheduled to meet Minis Yifter of
Ethiopia who defeated Shorter in the event at Raleigh four
years ago when Pan-African, U.S. and German teams
met.
Shorter said he would not run because of a “slight
injury” to his leg.
Top rated hurdler Charles Foster also will be noticeably
absent from the U.S. team as will Africa Filbert Bayi,
world record holder in the mile.
Southmen
The World Football League Memphis Southmen are
scheduled to leave for San Antonio today and an exhibition
game against the Wings tomorrow night.
Two starters, defensive back Rickie Harris and
defensive end Bill Stevenson, won’t make the trip due to
injuries.

By FRED DOWN
UPI Sports Writer
The Oakland A’s and Boston
Red Sox have picked up right
where they left off at the All-
Star break, putting the pressure
on their division rivals in the
American League.
The three-time world cham
pion A’s picked up ground on
both their closest rivals in the
Western Division, while the Red
Sox gained a full game on their
second-place rivals in the
Eastern Division. The A’s now
lead by 9% games in the West
and the Red Sox by 5 1-2 games
in the East.
With Reggie Jackson and Sal
Bando hitting homers and Ken
Holtzman winning his 12th
game, the A’s defeated the
Cleveland Indians 6-3. The
homers by Jackson and Bando
tied the score at 2-2 in the
second inning and the A’s then
scored three runs in the third to
take the lead.
Cecil Cooper, one of the Red
Sox’ under-rated young stars,
led a 12-hit attack with a
double, triple and homer in
Boston’s 8-3 triumph over the
Kansas City Royals. It was the
eighth straight victory for the
Red Sox as Luis Tiant pitched a
five-hitter to raise his record to
13-8.
The Detroit Tigers defeated
the Chicago White Sox 9-1 after
a 4-0 loss, the California Angels
beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-

the New York Yankess 7-2, and
the Baltimore Orioles scored a

Minnesota Twins in other AL

Wilbur Wood pitched a two

Aurelio Rodriguez drove in four
runs with a single and a double.
Mickey Lolich suffered his
seventh loss against 10 wins for
the Tigers in the first game.
