Dyeing Jeans
Is a Craft
Virtually all of the men who dye blue denim jeans pro
fessionally are fairly well up in their years. And there aren’t
very many of them. It's a particular craft. Like the making
of exotic cheeses. Or even like diamond cutting.
THOSE RELIGIOUS groups known as the Hutterites
must have something special. Only one out of every 20
members ever runs off from the home community. And
even most of those few runaways eventually go back.
ONE LITERARY FOOTNOTE indicates the great
English poet Percy Shelley was so disinterested in food
that he occasionally asked his wife Mary whether he had
yet eaten dinner on this day or that.
ALYESKA
Q. "Eight oil companies put together an outfit called
the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company to build Alaska’s
long tube. Where'd they get that ’Alyeska’?”
A. Comes from the Aleutian word for Alaska mean
ing "the great land.”
MISTER, do you put in an hour and a half a day doing
housework? If not, why not? That’s the national average
among husbands, I'm told. Teenagers put in an hour.
Younger folk, a half hour.
WHY DON’T tornadoes hit big cities? Dr. Theodore
Fujita thinks he knows the answer to that one. He’s a
geophysical specialist. The larger towns generate heat
that fends off the twisters, he says.
SCOTCH
If that scotch whisky of yours has an amber cast to it,
the distillers colored it with caramel. Natural scotch is
quite pale. But some bright fellow years ago thought he
wanted the liquor to look like French cognac. Thus the tint,
now traditional.
ALL RIGHT, ask your family historian to name the only
U.S. vice president who took his oath of office in another
country, then died without ever performing the duties of
said office. What, you don't remember William R. D. King?
TECHNICALLY, if it doesn’t strike the hour, it’s not a
clock, but a timepiece. That is, if it’s stationary. But if it's
a watch that strikes the hour, it’s neither a clock nor a
timepiece, but correctly a repeater.
AMAZING the oddball things that have exploded
quite violently. Freshly mined diamonds have done so.
So have elephant tusks when refrigerated. And touched
off with sparks, the dust of dried milk has blown up
warehouses.

Editorials
From other newspapers
One of the values making the United
States the strongest country in the world
both financially and militarily was the
American,work ethic.
Simply defined, that was, and is, the
idea that hard work is necessary in
lifefand pleasing to God) and that a good
day’s work should be rendered for a
day’s pay.
Unfortunately, this conscientious,
They Misunderstood
Thomaston Free Press
Remember all those federal loans to help
disadvantaged children to become advantaged
adults by making possible a college education?
It seems those who became the beneficiaries
mis understood the “advantage” bit.
Some are taking advantage of the government
by failing to repay the loans.
And the government is letting them do it to
them, and us the taxpayers, by failing to press
for collection of the loans.
The gross unfairness of reneging on the loans
and of the government failing to press for
collection falls on the shoulders of those who do
repay the loans, those in the future who may be
deprived of education if this poor track record
changes the program and the taxpayers who
footed the bill for loans, not gifts.
Certainly, we would hope that the government
will move to see that those whose life-time
earning capabilities were doubled, or better, by
the government-financed college education pay
the cost as agreed.
An Example For Us
“Baxley and Appling County now
have a consolidated fire depart
ment which means that the fire
truck won’t stop at the city limits
signs.”
The above quote from a news
item summed up the result of a
lengthy hassle in a neighboring
county about the fire protection
system and how much the two local
governments would pay.
Apparently the Appling County
and Baxley commissioners have
worked out a consolidation arran
gement which will guarantee rea
sonable fire protection for citizens
whether they live in the city and
county areas.
It is beyond comprehension in
this enlightened day and age that
communities should become ens
narled by such problems. And we
aren’t talking juat about
Baxley-Appling.
The sensible approach to the fire
protection problem in our own
community, so it seems to us, is to
have one fire department with
Living together
without marriage
A divorcee came to our town and cried
on the shoulder of one of my boys. Never
having been married, and being quite
successful, he had a home in the country
that he let her use. He never stayed there
nights, however, so later she moved to
town — taking up residence with some
other fellow. What do you think Christ
would say of this modern way of living
together not married? W.C.
Let me reverse the procedure here and
ask you a question. If a person said that
merely to look at a woman lustfully was to
commit adultery, how would that person
react to cohabiting without the benefit of
marriage? The answer is obvious. He
would condemn it And that’s what Christ
did (Matt 5). Don’t forget however, the

moral philosophy has in recent years
been ridiculed. While there’s
justification for criticism of the fast,
commercial pace of American life, the
work ethic is not to be confused with
today’s rat-race pace of living.
If too many conclude the desirable
way of life is to dodge work, get all they
can for a little work as possible, the
great age of this country will have
passed.
several stations manned by
professional firefighters.
Such a plan was recommended
by experts following a study come
years ago. The proposed system
would give good protection to the
city of Waycross and the heavily
populated county area around the
city and would, among other
things, lead to a reduction in fire
insurance rates for county
dwellers.
In fairness to citizens of outlying
areas a fire district arrangement
would be created so that those who
did not benefit would not have to
pay for the protection service.
A consolidated fire department
makes sense for Waycross-Ware. It
would offer protection for most of
the citizens of our community.
We urge the two local govern
ments to resurrect the old study
committee’s report or else come
up with a new one designed to
provide the security only a trained,
well-equipped fire department ar
rangement can afford.

good news that sins can be forgiven (John
8).
I think any observer of history would
detect a progressive degeneration in
moral standards. Malcolm Muggeridge
described Western civilization as “in an
advanced stage of decomposition.” That’s
why it’s no surprise that more couples are
electing to live together now without being
married. It’s no surprise, but it is
regerettable, because it violates God’s
plan.
The trouble is there’s no responsibility in
such an arrangement. Usually it exists
because of physical attraction. The official
commitment to each other that carries a
couple through times of disagreement and
disillusionment is not there. Its lack is
usually a fatal blow to the relationship.
