Mag plans no psychiatric
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (UPI) - The
publisher of the Saturday Evening Post
says the magazine has no intention of
having former President Richard Nixon’s
papers examined by a psychiatrist and a
psychologist.
Also, said Dr. Cory SerVaas, Julie Nixon
Eisenhower is still an editor in good
standing of the Post.
Dr. SerVaas, publisher of the Post and
co-editor with her husband, Beurt,
commented on a report quoting her that
Portugal
left wing
in charge
LISBON, Portugal (UPI) -
Portugal’s left-wing military
rulers have criticized moderate
challengers and pledged to put
down widespread unrest “with
the greatest vigor.”
The 28-man Revolutionary
Council called talks today to
discuss the biggest political
crisis in Portugal since the
armed forces came to power 15
months ago.
The military chiefs were
trying to form a new coalition
cabinet in the wake of pullouts
by the country’s two leading
political parties — the Social
ists and the Popular Demo
crats.
Socialist leader Mario Soares
led two major weekend rallies
and demanded the resignation
of Prime Minister Vasco
Goncalves, a left-wing general
accused of aiding Portugal’s
influential Communist party.
Anti-Communist incidents
over the weekend left one
soldier dead and 15 persons
injured. Troops broke up a
near-riot close to Lisbon air
port. The army remained on
alert.
An armed forces communique
Sunday reiterated the military’s
support for Goncalves and
accused Soares of slandering
the prime minister.
The communique rejected
Socialist charges that the prime
minister sides with the Com
munists. It said Goncalves had
the full backing of the military
and would stay.
“The authorities will suppress
with the greatest vigor all and
any attempts to disturb public
order,” a security , forces
statement said. It warned that
“no pretext of politics will be
allowed as cover” for violence.
Police reported all quiet after
a weekend of Socialist-Commu
nist clashes and attacks against
Communists in at least 10
towns.
The incident near Lisbon
airport began when an army
checkpoint set up to search for
weapons led to a traffic jam.
Angry motorists smashed doz
ens of cars before troops
arrived and used tear gas to
put down the disturbance.
Elvis
smelled
peppers
NORFOLK, Va. (UPI) -
Elvis Presley, performing
before a packed house Sunday
night, commented on what it
was like to have 11,000 persons
breathing on him, saying that
he smelled green peppers and
onions and that his backup
singers, the Sweet Inspirations,
had probably been eating
catfish.
Two of the three black
singers did not laugh with Elvis
and the audience.
Later, while introducing
members of his stage show,
Elvis looked toward the women
and said, “Sorry for any
embarrassment I might have
caused you, but if you can’t
take it, get off the pot.”
At that point, one of the
female vocalists left the stage
at Norfolk-Scope. Another fol
lowed her, as did a white
backup singer, not a member of
the group.
The third group member
stayed — singing, clapping and
smiling through the remainder
of the performance.
Elvis obviously appreciated
her loyalty. He walked over to
her at one point, took what
appeared to be a diamond ring
from his finger and held it out
to her. “Take it, take it,” he
said and she did.
Elvis’ earlier show Sunday
afternoon, also before a packed
house, went smoothly.

the Post plans a psychiatric examination
of Nixon’s papers.
“I never said that,” she said. “We are
not having any psychiatrist or
psychologist look at any of Nixon’s
papers.”
The question was asked because of
reports such a review was being made by
the Post and because of speculation the
review might document some of the
extreme stress under which Nixon lived in
the last months of his presidency.
Dr. SerVaas said what the Post is doing
is “a story for the January issue and
possibly a series of stories about people
who have remained loyal to President
Nixon and support him for the good things
he has done.
“We want to do a good, objective article
and interview people who know what
causes people to get on a bandwagon and
what causes them to stay on or to get off.”
Dr. SerVaas said the thrust of the
article, as discussed by her and others on
papers examination
the staff, is aimed at “mass loyalty and
mass hate.”
She also was distressed by another
magazine’s article about Mrs.
Eisenhower, an assistant managing editor
at the Post.
She said, “People magazine made it look
like we just had Julie on our staff because
her father was president and that we were
phasing her out because her father no
longer is in the White House.
“That is not true. Julie stands on her

own right. She is a good editor. She was
here last week. In September she will
become consulting editor to the Curtis
Publishing Company.
“She works more on books instead of the
Saturday Evening Post. Right now she is
working on the Saturday Evening Post
Christmas book. The Julie Eisenhower
Cook Book for Children comes out next
week.
“Julie is a very effective person who
works terribly hard and gets books out
faster than we can get them printed.”
