Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY — My kitchen and bathroom floors are
covered with a “no wax” floor covering that has yellowed
from wax and use. I have tried using water and ammonia,
scrubbing with a scrub brush and everything I can think of
and would like to know how to get rid of this yellow buildup.
- DENISE.
DEAR DENISE — I wonder why you used wax on a floor
that you knew should not be waxed. You were very vague
as to the type of floor covering. My answer has to be a bit
on the vague side, too, and with reservations. Remove a
wax buildup that has caused discoloration on an average
resilient type flooring by washing with a good cleanser and
then scrub the wax off with steel wool (fine No. 00) dipped
in the cleanser.
To strip off all old wax many recommend one cup am
monia, one-half cup powdered detergent in a half gallon hot
water — the hot water tends to soften the wax. Do test on a
small spot. This may be too much ammonia for the amount
of wax on some floors. Use as little as possible to get the
job done. Apply to a small space with a sponge mop and
leave three to five minutes, scrub with a stiff brush or fine
steel wool but do be careful not to scratch the finish on the
floor. Remove cleaning solution and old wax with a sponge
mop or cloth, proceed to adjacent area until entire floor is
dean. Rinse floor thoroughly with clear cool water. If spots
of wax remain repeat treatment only where needed. —
POLLY.
< DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with the makers of baby
clothing, especially sleepwear, that is usually too short. I usually
end up cutting the feet off but my baby needs those sleeper feet to
walk around in.
I never throw away used envelopes— they are ideal to use for
writing grocery lists on the outside and the inside holds a pencil,
coupons and even a small calculator. — R.C.K.
DEAR POLLY — When using a double boiler for cooking
something for a meal never throw away the boiling hot water in
the bottom but use it to make instant coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
Otherwise set it aside to cool and use for watering houseplants.
This will save quite a bit of water that would otherwise be
wasted. — LORRAINE.

Heart stimulus
is blocked
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - While I
was in the hospital for surgery I
had an electrocardiogram
(ECG), and the surgeon said I
had a right bundle branch
block. My family doctor
repeated it and said I had a con
duction defect, a cholesterol
problem. My cholesterol test
was within the normal limits.
My doctor said the conduction
defect was a minor thing and
many people have this finding
for years, and I shouldn't
worry. He put me on Atromid-S
three times a day, told me to
watch the fats in my diet and
come back in six months for
another ECG.
I am a 53-year-old male, ap
parently in good health
otherwise, except for slightly
elevated blood pressure. My
weight is normal, and I do not
smoke. I would appreciate your
explanation of this and the risks
to my health.
DEAR READER - Right
bundle branch block means a
defect in the nerve-like fibers
that carry the electrical
stimulus to the right side of the
heart for each beat. It doesn’t
significantly affect the heart
function. Its importance
depends solely on what causes
it And, to make matters more
confusing, it is a conduction
defect. Many minor conduction
defects are sometimes
classified (not always correct
ly) as right bundle branch block
or “incomplete bundle branch
block."
I saw a large number of right
bundle branch block cases, and
many more so-called in
complete types, in the U.S. Air
Force flying population when I
studied them over a 10-year
span. In many instances these
were in young, healthy men
with no heart disease at all. It
can be a birth defect, or from a
minor inflammation of the
heart from a childhood disease,
or it can be the result of fatty
deposits in the arteries that
cause heart attacks. So, it can
be something or nothing. Its im
portance must be judged on
other medical findings.
Your cholesterol may be nor
mal by some values but ap
parently your doctor thought
the level was important enough
to warrant giving you medicine
to try to lower it. Elevated
cholesterol is one of the impor
tant factors that increases the
risk of having a heart attack.
For more information on the
significance of cholesterol
levels, send me 50 cents and a
stamped, self-addressed
envelope in care of this
newspaper, P.O. Box 1551,
Radio City Station, New York,
NY 10019 and ask for The
Health Letter number 1-2 on
cholesterol.
Your elevated blood pressure
is another important risk fac
tor. It makes any mild eleva
tion of the cholesterol even
more important. The fact that
you don’t smoke is a plus, and
your risk is less by as much as a
factor of three compared to a
moderate or heavy cigarette
smoker with the same other fin
dings.
I recognize that you think you
have no weight problem.
However, if you have any
significant amounts of fat at all
under your skin around the
small of the back, you might do
a lot for yourself by losing
weight. Many people with
moderate elevations of blood
pressure have perfectly normal
pressure when they eliminate
even small amounts of fat that
they may consider normal.
DEAR DR. LAMB - In order
to maintain a normal potassium
level, I have been eating an
average of one banana per day.,
Is there any possible adverse
reaction to the eating of
bananas over a period of time?
DEAR READER - No. An
average-sized banana contains
about 100 calories. Bananas are
a good source of potassium and
so are most fruits. They are
very low in sodium and are es
sentially fat-free. The only
possible problem would be from
eating large amounts regularly
to the point of eating too many
calories, but you could do that
with almost any food.
