Some Georgia high school football teams practice 10 to
12 weeks. Others never quit They practice year-nounc
Year-round practice is legal under -current
rules.. .provided players do not put on pads and hit
“We’D stick with the old way,” Coach Max Dowis mid
this morning. I believe we can compete using the old
system as long as our players are dedicated .”
The ‘old way’ Coach Dowis referred to is toTftnit pre
season practice to four weeks.
“I might change my mind if we start getting beat,”The
coach joked.
Coach Dowis doesn’t like the current practice trend
“The season is long enough as It is. I wish they’d Stop
year-round practice. That’s too much of a good thing
“I’m sure our players would get tired of me if We
practiced year-round, and I’m sure I’d getTtred of them
“I hope we never have to extend our practice,” he aaid
The practice talk came up when Coach Dowis, who is
the Region 6-AAA football Coach of the Year, wan naked
about pre-season practice for his Bears, the
AAA Champions.

Springs on Aug. 17.

Macon in Macon.

ready when practice starts,” he said.

Baseball’s most prized shot- I
gun has evolved into a I
blunderbuss.
Nolan Ryan, the toast of the I
American league in fashioning I
a 10-3 record through the first I
week of June, has suddenly lost I
the velocity and accuracy in his 1
right arm, dropping eight ’
straight decisions.
Ryan lasted a mere 1 1-3
innings against the Baltimore
Orioles Tuesday night, allowing
six runs on four hits and an
equal number of walks. Tommy I
Davis drove in three of the runs
with his second home run of the
year and a single. Baltimore |
finished up against reliever I
Chuck Hockenbery with two I
more runs for the 8-3 victory.
“He’s laboring to throw
strikes," Davis observed of
Ryan. “He can't really do what
he wants to. You can tell by his |
expression. The 1974 Nolan ■
Ryan had a lot of confidence in |
his pitches. Guys would be
taking anything he threw
offspeed: the curve, slider..
whatever. You had to psyche
yourself for his fastball.
“I think he’ll come back, but
I think it may take him a long
time."
Ryan has beaten the Orioles
twice this season, no-hitting
them in one of the games. That
was June 1 and he’s won just
once since then.
“He told me before the game
he felt as strong as an ox,"
California Manager Dick Wil
liams said. “He was trying to
muscle them, but I don’t think
he ever really popped the ball."
“I just couldn't get my
fastball over," lamented Ryan,
who said the eight game losing
streak is the longest he’s ever
endured. “But then I’ve been
struggling all season. I haven’t
really gotten into a groove this
year where I could throw the
ball with consistency. I’ll
continue to have games like
this until I get my rhythm
