your payroll check for the ex
press purpose of purchasing
savings bonds. Or, you can
also institute a similar sav
ings program through your
bank even by an automatic
withdrawal from your ac
count.
Os course, you might con
sider putting money in a sav
ings account by a check pa.
ment each pay period just as
if you were writing a check to
pay your monthly utility or
gasoline credit card bill. In
that way, saving money be
comes an expenditure, not an
afterthought. It is difficult to
begin an enforced savings
program, but well worth de
veloping the habit. Good luck.
Q. A few weeks ago I over
heard a conversation where
one of the individuals stated
he was forming a new type of
corporation because he was
expanding his business over
seas. It sounded as if he used
the word “disc.” Does that
have anything to do with the
record industry? — P.L., Los
Angeles
A. No, it does not. The word
“disc” is an abbreviation for
Domestic International Sales
Corporation. It is a corpora
tion which can be formed in
any of the 50 states, plus the
District of Columbia. Disc
was primarily developed as a
form of tax shelter to busi
nessmen in order to encour
age exports of American
goods and products. If you
are engaged in a business
which is involved in export
ing, you should obtain a more
thorough explanation of this
complicated subject from
your professional tax coun
sel.
Q. Is there any difference
between an investment bank
ing firm and a brokerage
house; or are those words in
terchangeable? — F.T.,
Glendale, Calif.
A. A brokerage house is in
volved with the buying and
selling of securities. Through
its sales representatives, it
may give professional advice
on securities based on infor
mation compiled by its statis
tical or research depart
ments. A brokerage house
can also perform miscellane
ous services for the con
venience of the investor.
On the other hand, invest
ment banking firms are in
volved with transactions re
lating to the raising of capi
tal. The investment banker
can act as an agent in the pri
vate placement of securities
with large businesses or
banks. An investment bank
ing firm will underwrite of
ferings that are negotiated.
For example, XYZ Corp
needs $3 million for various
capital expenditures. The
company does not want a
public underwriting as it feels
the financing might be harm
ful to the price of the compa
ny stock. An investment
banking firm will place the fi
nancing privately. Or, if a
sale of bonds were conducted
by sealed bidding, such as
with municipal bonds, the in
vestment banking firm could
also sell the bonds to the pub
lic without being involved in
any underwriting risk.
Let us say that the City of
Santa Rosa, Calif., wanted to
issue some new school bonds.
The city officials could go to
an investment banking firm
and ask the firm to negotiate
the entire offering on behalf
of the city.
It is interesting to note that
there are major member
New York Stock Exchange
firms, such as Dean Witter &
Co., that also have invest
ment banking divisions as
part of the various services
which are offered to the indi
vidual investor or business
community.

By RIV TOBIN
Copley News Service
Dear Mrs. Tobin:
Friends came to town and
stayed at a hotel. We invited
them out for dinner and asked
them where they would like to
dine. They suggested the
most lavish and expensive
restaurant for miles around.
It cost my husband nearly
SIOO for the evening. We feel
we were “taken” and won
dered how it happened. Do
you? How can we avoid a re
peat with other out-of-town
ers?
Betty and Bill
Dear Betty and Bill:
You left the door wide open
when you asked your friends
to select the restaurant. You
were the hosts and should
have made reservations at
the restaurant of YOUR
choice. I don’t want to believe
you were “taken.” I prefer to
think your guests had heard
of that particular restaurant
and opted for that over any
other. Even at the zero hour
you could have steered them
some place else by saying,
“Restaurant X is always so
crowded,” or noisy or so far
away or has difficult parking.
Now you know.
Dear Mrs. Tobin:
Our daughter was five
months pregnant when she
was married. Her friends
want to give her a baby show
er. Is that proper, under the
circumstances?
Mary B.
Dear Mary B.:
What circumstances? Your
daughter’s friends want to
share in the happiness of the
new arrival. That is what a
baby shower is all about.
Special to Mrs. Gross:
Dear Mrs. Gross:
I saw your letter in the lola,
Wis., paper. You said you had
an old picture of two children
and underneath are the
words, “Gar Gjennom
Maven.” I think the last word
should be, “Haven.” The
phrase is Norwegian and
means, “walking through the
garden.” I read, write and
speak Norwegian. Sincerely,
Alice Bariknea
Dear Mrs. Tobin:
Should not a widow be ad
dressed by correspondence
and by her name as Mrs.
George Smith? That would
also include her stationery
heading and her return ad
dress sticker. On business
transactions I believe she
would be Mrs. Evelyn Smith.
Isn’t it true that only a di
vorcee drops her husband’s
given and surname?
W.C.Cogger
Dear Mr. Cogger:
A widow is known by her
husband’s full name until she
dies or remarries. A divorcee
drops her husband’s given
name and uses her maiden
(or given) name instead.
Very young divorcees often
ask the court to restore their
maiden name. Obviously, if a
divorcee kept her husband’s
full name and he remarried,
there would be two Mrs.
George Smiths. Can you
imagine what the nation’s
computers would have to go
through to straighten out that
mess?
