CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo. (UPI) — The
El Paso mine once was the 10th largest
producer in the fabled Cripple Creek-
Victor gold fields. Now it is going back in
business, thanks to new technology and
sharply increased gold prices.

took a look at what they are paying for gold
today and figured the time had come to
restart the El Paso mine.
Weaver, a former theology student and
importer-exporter, assembled about 50
stockholders this year to buy the defunct
pit.
The new company, El Paso Gold Mines,
New gold from old mine
Inc., will not bring new ore up from
underground — at least not yet. Instead,
the firm will use a rebuilt mill to process
an estimated 275,000 tons of gold-bearing
rock left in piles by earlier miners.
“They dumped the rock because the gold
in it was of too low a grade to extract
economically,” Weaver said. “Now, with
the gold prices about five times what they
were, we feel it will be worth our while to
process the ore and remove the gold.
“You might say we’re involved in a gold
recycling process.”
Weaver said the mill, which began
operations in January, will be able to
process 50 tons of ore per day when it is in
full production in several months.
“We expect to get about 10 ounceserf gold ’
from each 50 tons of ore,” said Weaver.
“Our processing costs will run about $9 per 1
ton, or $450 a day. !
i
“At current prices of $165 per ounce, that *
will leave us $1,200 per day, from which we <
will have to subtract the refining costs. We <
Blueprint
for dieting
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
(Third of six parts)
The main objectives of a
healthy diet plan can be put into
five categories.
—To provide sufficient
calories as the source of energy
for your body.
—To provide sufficient pro
tein. adequate in all of the
amino acids, to provide the
basic building blocks for the
body’s processes of building
tissues, hormones, enzymes
and carrying out essential body
functions.
—To provide a minimum of 50
grams of carbohydrate a day
sufficient to enable the body to
carry out its chemical
processes without causing a
chemical imbalance.
—To provide a minimal
amount of fat. which can hardly
be avoided anyway, to enable
the absorption of the fat-soluble
vitamins, principally vitamins
D and A The small amount of
fat necessary should include
very small amounts of the
polyunsaturated fats.
A healthy diet should limit
the proportion of fat and
cholesterol. Your fat intake
should be less than 35 per cent
of the total calories ingested.
Less than 10 per cent of the
total calories should come from
saturated fats while ap
proximately 10 per cent of the
total calories should be polyun
saturated fat. The cholesterol
should not exceed 300
milligrams a day.
—A sufficient variety of foods
should be included in the menu
to provide adequate amounts of
all the vitamins and minerals.
Nutritionists have considered
all these facts and generalizing
our food into four basic groups.
The idea is that you should ob
tain sufficient foods from each
of the four basic groups to have
a fairly balanced diet. These
four basic groups are the daily
products, the meat group, the
cereal and bread group.
The dairy-products group
means milk and milk products.
They are the major source of
calcium in our diet and also
provide phosphorus. You can
get a large amount of
phosphorus from other
products, but it s more difficult
to obtain the calcium. In addi
tion. the milk products provide
an important diet source of
complete protein, meaning that
the protein will include all the
essential amino acids. The
butterfat in any of these milk
products naturally contains
vitamins A and D. In recent
years, dairy products have been
enriched with A and D to in
crease the amount of these
vitamins in the usual diet of the
greatest number of people.
If you need to control the
amount of fat in your diet, and
most people do. you can use the
low-fat items; fortified skim
milk, buttermilk, nonfat dry
milk powder, and uncreamed
cottage cheese.
The meat group includes all
the mammal meats (beef, pork,
and lamb), fish, shellfish and
poultry.
Plan your meat group to
avoid too much saturated fat
and to provide sufficient
He was angry because
his supper wasn’t ready
ATLANTA (UPI) — A man
reportedly angry because his
wife had not prepared dinner
stabbed and shot her Tuesday
night and then killed a neighbor
man and wounded another
woman, police said.
Mrs. Ethyl Mary Labon told
police her husband, Willie
Labon, 47, became angry when
he came home “because there
wasn’t any dinner,” stabbed
her twice in the chest and
abdomen and shot her once
with a pistol.
Officers said Mrs. Labon told
a neighbor, Reuben Richardson,
52, to call police but her
husband followed Richardson to
his apartment and fatally shot
him in the heart.
Detective W.A. Holmes said
Labon then returned to his own
apartment and shot a neighbor,
Mrs. Vemell James, 28, once in
the chest and shot his wife
twice more before fleeing in a
car.
“The man (Richardson) was
apparently just sitting there,
and got it right through the
heart,” said a policeman at the
hope to come out about SI,OOO a day in the S
Wack.”
The mill will produce a goldrich sludge £;
which will be shipped to the American :$
Smelting Company in El Paso, Tex., for |
refining. The sludge, or concentrate, will -g
contain “about 95 per cent of the gold in the <•
original ore with about one-fortieth of the 5
original bulk,” said Weaver.
amounts of polyunsaturated fat.
You can do this by rotating the
items so that one-third of the
group comes from mammal
meat, one-third from fish, and
one-third from poultry.
Do you want to use meat sub
stitutes? You might, with the
worldwide shortage of items in
the meat group. The milk group
is an obvious meat substitute
for protein.
The bean group should not be
used alone, at least for growing
children. But it is all right if
you also use the proper amount
of the dairy group for complete
proteins, or include plenty of
cereals in the diet. For planning
purposes, estimate that you will
need twice as much cooked
mature bean seeds as you would
need of meat (raw weight).
Eggs contain good protein,
but they also contain a lot of
cholesterol and usually con
siderable amounts of saturated
fat. Two eggs weigh three and
a-half ounces (100 grams), and
since they are 12 per cent pro
tein you would need three eggs
to equal the amount of protein
in a serving of the meat group.
The third basic food group in
cludes cereals and bread. You
should think of this group as the
vitamin B, vitamin E and
mineral group. It is also a ma
jor source of bulk in the diet,
important amounts of protein
and polyunsaturated fats within
the bread and cereal group.
Because milk products are used
in making bread items, they ac
tually provide both cereal and
milk products for the diet.
The fourth important food
group includes vegetables,
fruits, melons and berries. This
group is rich in vitamins A and
C.
The listing of foods within the
basic four food groups only tells
you what you need to do to meet
your protein, vitamin, and
mineral requirements. It does
not tell you how much food you
need to satisfy your calorie re
quirements. Having sufficient
calories in the diet is just as im
portant to a well-balanced diet
as having sufficient protein,
vitamins and minerals.
Remember that calories, not
vitamins, are the source of
energy. The calorie needs will
depend on each individual's liv
ing habits, including levels of
physical activity and age.
A number of rules have been
formulated as to how many
calories a person needs. They
can only be a general guide,
since the only important figure
is how many calories you or
members of your family need.
You can tell whether you’re
getting enough calories or not
by your energy level and by the
presence of body fat. If you’re
restricting your calorie intake
and you feel tired, it’s likely
you need more calories. In
creased amounts of fat deposits
you can feel or see underneath
the skin indicate you’re getting
more calories than you need.

scene. “He (the suspect) just
reached around the corner,
went boom, and that was it.”
Mrs. James was reported in
satisfactory condition following
surgery while Mrs. Labron was
listed in poor condition.
Police issued an alert for
Labron’s car.
PATENTS DOWN
NEW YORK (UPI) — The
number of patents granted to
U.S. inventors over the past
few years has declined, accord
ing to a recent private study.
In 1974 a total of 54,325
patents was granted to Ameri
cans compared with 588, 963 in
1971, says the Intellectual
Property Owners, a nonprofit
group seeking to make people
aware of the benefits of a
strong patent system.
T.L. Bowes, executive direc
tor of IPO, attributes the
decline to a loss of incentive for
invention and investment due to
unfavorable court decisions that
tend to invalidate patent rights.
