Space-eggs
SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI) -
Assignment: design a one
pound package that could be
dropped from a satellite to the
moon’s surface without hurting
the contents — an egg.
The Pacific Science Center’s
aerospace education workshop
gave the advance assignment to
90 participating teachers. The
results were tested Monday
when an Army helicopter
dropped the basketball-size
bundles from an altitude of 200
feet.
One design passing the
plopdown test on a grassy field
was an egg tucked inside a
hotdog bun in a shoe box filled
with popcorn. Another was an
egg simply wrapped in 25 yards
of aluminum foil.

Norsworthy says drivers
lucky to have licenses
City Commissioner R. L.
“Skeeter” Norsworthy said this
morning, after checking into a
complaint made by Commiss
ioner Raymond Head yesterday
concerning two local taxi
drivers, that he thinks the
drivers are lucky to even have
licenses.
After checking police records,
he found one of the men has
been charged with nine viola
tions, including traffic and
gaming offenses, during the
past 10 years.
Since 1964, the other taxi
driver has been charged 24
times for such offenses as
operating his taxi without a
permit and having the vehicle
improperly marked, speeding
in a school zone, speeding,
cursing, throwing bottles,
running a stop sign, improper
passing, collision, driving
without a license, gaming and
simply battery.
“I think the Police Depart
ment is very lenient to permit
both men to have a taxi licen
se,” Norsworthy said.
He explained that even
though a cash bond may be
written on the ticket by the
arresting officer, if when the
officer gets back to the police
station and learns the accused
is a repeated offender, the of
ficer may send the case to court
instead of accepting the cash
bond.
The two men involved were
accused of racing down the
North Expressway around 4
a.m. recently. They were
charged with traveling 70 miles
per hour in a 45-mile zone.
One of the men explained he
was trying to catch his buddy so
they could stop at the Waffle
House for a snack.
Norsworthy said taxis are
equipped with two-way radios
permitting conversations
between the drivers.
Later when the men at
tempted to pay the $57.50 cash
bond as set on their tickets, they
were told they must go to city
court instead.
Judge Tom Lewis fined one of
the men $lO5 and the other $155.
During the city commission
meeting yesterday morning,
Commissioner Head questioned
the justice of a police officer’s
setting a bond on a ticket, then
later refusing to accept the
money and transferring the
case to court.
Head also questioned why, for
the same offense, their court
fines were different.
Head stressed he was not
critizing the police department
or court, but he wondered if all
cases were treated with equal
justice or if sometimes personal
likes or dislikes may interfere.
Norsworthy brought out that
tickets issued by the Griffin
Police Department state which
offenses must be tried in court.
There are eight offenses
listed, including speeding in
excess of 20 miles per hour over
the speed limit, with which the
two men were charged.
For all offenses, other than

the eight listed, the accused
may post a cash bond if it is set
on the ticket. Or if he believes
himself to be innocent and
wishes a trial, he must appear
in court on the date stated.
A person driving 10 miles an
hour over the limit may also be
bound over to court if the police
officer thinks the cir
cumstances warrant, Nors
worthy continued.
He said an officer has the
right to set the bonds, then if
circumstances warrant, the
right to say which cases go to
court.
“It’s the commissioners duty
to hire the judge, but we don’t
tell him how to run his court,”
he continued.
The commissioners set the
amount of cash bonds for
various offenses. They range
from $27.50 for a minor moving
traffic violation to SBOS
maximum.
Judge Lewis determines what
his court fines are, Norsworthy
stated.
Public carriers or taxi drivers
are not average citizens. They
have certain restrictions over
other drivers, he said.
