dent Ford, Soviet party secre

European leaders. Part of the
agreement would ban outside
interference in the internal
affairs of countries.
The figures are imprecise but
all in the same ballpark. Sen.
Lloyd Bentsen, D-Tex., quoted
the CIA as saying the Soviet
Union was sending $lO million a
month to Communists in
Portugal. A report on NATO
presented to the Senate Armed
Services Committee says “a
reported S3B million” went from
the USSR to the Communists.
Intelligence reports reaching
the Pentagon say the KGB, the
Soviet secret police and spy
agency, has sent between $25
and $75 million directly to the
Communist party. Another esti
mate ranges from sls to SSO
million, some of the money
coming from East Germany.
The money, these sources
say, is going directly to the
highly disciplined Communist
party run by Alvaro Cunhal, a
tough Stalinist. Portuguese law
prevents political parties from
accepting foreign money or
assistance.
In elections April 25, Commu
nists and their allies got 15 per
cent of the vote against 64 per
cent for the Socialists.
Nevertheless, the Commu
nists allied themselves with the
ruling Armed Forces Movement
and have worked to increase
their control of the country,
closing socialist newspapers
and trying to prevent opposi
tion. Last week, the 28-member
Revolutionary Council, the top
military leadership, dissolved
the cabinet after the Socialists
and Popular Democrats resig
ned.
Premier Vasco Goncalves, a
leftrwing major general, has
promised to form a new cabinet
of national unity by the end of
the week.

CHICAGO (UPI) — Actor Pat O’Brien, hospitalized
after he complained of chest pains, was listed in stable
condition today.
The 75-year-old actor was hospitalized Tuesday and was
resting comfortably, according to his doctor.
O’Brien and his wife, Eloise, were in Chicago appearing
in the play “Skip and Go Naked.”
A hospital spokesman said doctors doubted O’Brien had
a heart attack and that it was not abnormal for patients
with chest pains to be placed in the coronary unit for
observation.
Quiet birthday
HYANNISPORT, Mass. (UPI) - Rose Kennedy quietly
celebrated her 85th birthday Tuesday. She began
the day as she always does —by attending Mass at St.
Francis Xavier Church.
Mrs. Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Mrs. Ethel Kennedy
were reported at the family compound.
A birthday party was planned for Saturday, to be hosted
by her youngest son, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.
Mrs. Kennedy, matriarch for one of the nation’s most
politically powerful families and daughter of former
Boston Mayor John Francis Fitzgerald, was born July 22,
$ 1890.
Save the goose
LONG BEACH, Calif. (UPI) - Howard Hughes pleaded
with the city harbor commission Tuesday to save his
Spruce Goose, once the world’s largest plane, because he
has a “very great emotional and sentimental
attachment” to it.
The reclusive billionaire did not appear personally, of
course. He sent a lawyer, Jones, to ask the commission to
grant another one-year extension on his lease on a hangar
for the enormous flying boat, which the city has been
trying to evict for years.
Jones said that if the plane goes now, under an
agreement with the Smithsonian Institution and the
government it will have to be cut into five pieces for
distribution to museums. In a year, Hughes can arrange
to have it preserved in one piece as an exhibit, he said.
The plane, which has a 320-foot wingspan, was airborne
only once —for a few minutes in 1947, with Hughes at the
controls.
The federal General Services Administration actually
owns the plane. Hughes pays SBOO a year to lease the plane
and SIOO,OOO a year for its hangar, where it has been kept
secluded for 27 years.
| Police shows good
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — NBC-TV president Robert
Howard says cops ‘n robbers television shows aren’t just
mindless diversion, but help educate Americans about
how law enforcement really works.
“I believe NBC has done more than any other network
to develop authentic dramas about the realities of police
work,” Howard said Tuesday, citing “Adam 12” and
“Police Story” as examples.
“A good television drama can show police work not only
as it is, but as it changes in response to new needs and
attitudes of society. A show like ‘Police Woman’ for
example can help bring greater public acceptance of the
female law enforcement officer.” Howard spoke to the
annual meeting of Citizens for Law Enforcement.
Burt to be witness
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Burt Reynolds will be a
prosecution witness this week in the trial of Vaughn
Greenwood, alleged ax-wielding burglar who has been
called a suspect in the * ‘Skid Row slasher’ ’ murders.
A mysterious “slasher” has cut the throats of nine men,
mostly helpless derelicts, in a series of killings that
terrorized Skid Row in December and January. Police
Chief Ed Davis identified Greenwood as a suspect in the
killings but was immediately silenced by a court gag
V: order.
Greenwood was not charged with the slayings.
His trial on burglary and assault charges began
Monday. The prosecution said Reynolds will testify that
an antique rifle and valuable watch were stolen from his
home in the Hollywood Hills above Sunset Strip. The
prosecution alleges the burglary was part of a crime spree
by Greenwood through the neighborhood climaxed by an
ax attack on a neighbor of Reynolds’.
