China orbits 3rd
artificial satellite
HONG KONG (UPI) —China has put its
third artifical satellite into orbit.
Intelligence analysts said today it
probably was the first Chinese spy-in-the
sky space vehicle.
The launching of the satellite from the
Shuangchengtxe missile complex at the
edge of the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia
coincided with a propaganda blast from
Peking at just completed joint Soviet-
American space exploit
The successful launch Saturday was
reported by both Peking Radio and the
Biologists to study shark
SAN DIEGO. Calif. (UPI) - Marine
biologists will examine a 2,000-pound white
shark harpooned and caught by a
commercial swordfishing boat to see what
the giant predator had been feeding on and
where.
Representatives of t h e Scripps Institute
of Oceanography at La Jolla, Calif., and
Sea World of San Diego, a marine
amusement park, said they would meet
the Heather B, which landed the 17-fbot
shark last Wettoesday after a 90-minute
struggle about four miles off Santa
Catalina Island.
After catching the shark, the fishing
boat put into harbor at Avalon in Catalina
Bay, but the harbormaster, concerned
about the effect it may have on the tourist
trade, ordered the skipper to take it away.
"It was a bigg}*," said lifeguard Paul

Few technical details were provided.
The instrumention aboard the
spacecraft was not disclosed, nor was the
weight giver.
China's first satellite, launched in 1970,
played back for listeners on earth the
popular Chinese revolutionary tune, "The
East Is Red." and transmitted some radio
data that never was disclosed. A second
orbiting payload a year later was
successful in carrying out "planned work
of scientific experiment." an official an

teeth were about one and half indies in
diameter and about four to five indies
long."
Dr. Lannie Cornell, a scientist at Sea
World, said the presence of a white shark
that size was unusual in Southern
California waters. Cornell said he would
open the predator and find out what it had
been eating and where.
After examination, the carcass will
probably be stuffed and put on exhibit,
scientists said.

Lung infection
delays return
HONOLULU (UPI) - The
Apollo astronauts, whose hero
es' welcome was delayed by a
prolonged hospital stay with
serious lung irritations, will be
reunited with their families for
rest and relaxation in Hawaiian
beach houses.
Doctors today said Thomas
Stafford, Vance Brand and
Donald “Deke” Slayton will be
released from Tripier Army-
Medical Center Tuesday, but
will remain in Hawaii for at
least 10 more days to avoid
complications.
The pilots, who breathed
poisonous fumes in their
spaceship during their return
last Thursday from a historic
nine days in space, were much
improved but very susceptible
to common germs and diseases
such as colds and flu, doctors
at Tripier and at the Johnson
Space Center in Houston
reported.
Dr. Peter Bartelloni, chief of
medicine at Tripier, said he
was "optimistic" for a full
recovery with no long-term
effects.
“I don't have anything at the
present time that would lead
me to think otherwise," Bartel
loni said. “I don’t think I can
go beyond that. In other words,
I think the progress is
satisfactory.”

Elliot Richardson
Prince charming
LONDON (UPI) — Prince Charles, heir to the British
throne, had a girl-filled weekend to start six weeks leave
from the Royal Navy.
But there's no hint of real romance in the air for the 26-
year-old son of Queen Elizabeth 11, according to friends.
He raised eyebrows by showing up to play polo Saturday
with Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, 12 years older and
a former girlfriend of actor Richard Burton.
The explanation was that Elizabeth, estranged from her
husband, is a distant cousin of Charles and is the
houseguest of his great-uncle.
Sunday Charles arrived for another polo game accom
panied by blonde Penelope Eastwood, 20.
No romance here, either. Charles, friends said, merely
gave her a lift because she is the girl friend of a distant
cousin of his, Norton Knatchbull, 27, who said: “She’s my
girl friend. She’s nothing to do with Prince Charles.*’
New CIA chief
NEW YORK (UPI) — Elliot Richardson, ambassador to
the Court of St James’s and a former attorney general, is
a leading contender to replace William Colby as head of
the CIA, Time magazine reported Sunday.
Time, quoting administration sources, said “sooner or
later, quite possibly by the end of this year, Colby seems
certain to be asked to leave.”
“He (Colby) inherited all the skeletons in the closet and
issued all the corrective memoranda, but that’s not going
to make him any less expendable,” Time quoted a White
House aide as saying.
According to Time, the search for a successor already is
started and “one prime possibility is Elliot Richardson.”
Shriver hits GOP
LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. (UPI) — Sargent Shriver,
an unannounced candidate for the 1976 Democratic
presidential nomination, has blasted the economic
policies of former President Richard Nixon and President
Ford.
“The Republican administration under Nixon and Ford
has given us the most sustained period of depression since
Herbert Hoover. When the Democrats are in power, it’s
good for Americans and good for American business,” he
told a rally in this small middle Tennessee town.
“I want not only to win the White House but to win
Tennessee for the Democratic Party in ’76,” Shriver said.
Shriver, brother-in-law of President John Kennedy and
the party’s vice presidential nominee in 1972, is expected
to make a formal announcement of his candidacy in late
summer or early fall.
Udall ill
PHOENIX, Ariz. (UPI) — Rep. Morris Udall, D-Ariz.,
hospitalized Saturday for a bladder infection, will not be
released until later this week, his press secretary said.
Udall, a candidate for the Democratic presidential
nomination, complained of back pains Saturday and was
taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. Doctors could find no
cause for the pains and Udall left to attend a news
conference.
After the news conference, however, the pain increased
and Udall was admitted to the hospital for tests, forcing
him to cancel plans to fly to Los Angeles for appearances
Sunday and Monday.
The congressman was reported resting confortably
Sunday after undergoing additional tests.

CHICAGO—Louis Kuebler, 79, adjusts a line of an
elaborate model of the USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides,”
preparing it for Bicentennial exhibition at the Continental
Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. Kuebler and a friend,
now deceased, started the project in 1932 and completed it
in 1957. Ship model is 12W-ft. long and HVi-ft. from keel to
highest mast tip. Model has 52 bronze cannons that
actually fire, bilge pumps that actually pump, and Irish
flax sails that were stitched with surgical needles. Unique
model was recently purchased from Kuebler for an
undisclosed price and the new owners have insured it for
sl-million. (UPI)
