Space age
Uranus
mission
charted
By FRANK MACOMBER
Copley News Service
The federal space agency,
beset with problems now that
the shine of success is wear
ing off the U.S.-Soviet
manned space effort, never
theless is pushing ahead with
a daring mission for 1979 —
an unmanned flight to
Uranus, third farthest planet
from the sun.
NASA officials insist the
Uranus mission would not in
terfere with the first manned
space shuttle flight, also
scheduled for 1979.
But Congress, which has
not yet approved the Uranus
project, is expected to ask
some questions about the
mission before it gets a green
light money-wise.
Meanwhile, NASA already
has invited scientists to pro
pose experiments for the
Uranus mission. The flight
would use a Mariner-type
spacecraft to fly past Jupiter,
then continue on to Uranus
and the far reaches of the
solar system.
The Uranus flyby, NASA
claims, would provide man
with his first close-up look at
the distant planet —a mam
moth ball of poisonous gases,
spinning on its side and de
scribed as one of the most bi
zarre planets in the solar sys
tem.
While the project still needs
approval, NASA officials ex
plain they need to select mis
sion investigations and ex
periments early so they can
crank up scientific planning
and development.
A typical Jupiter-Uranus
flight, NASA says, would lift
off Nov. 3, 1979. The space
craft would arrive at Jupiter
at a flyby distance of 245,000
miles on April 10, 1981. A
closer encounter with one or
more of the large, planet-type
Jovian moons also is planned.
Using Jupiter’s gravity like
a slingshot to speed the
Mariner and rechart its tra
jectory, the spacecraft would
travel on to a mid-1985 en
counter with Uranus, pos
sibly coming as close as
15,000 miles.
Mariner’s sensors even
might peer beyond Uranus as
an extended mission if it sur
vives the rigors of unfriendly
space for six years.
Booster for the Jupiter-
Uranus mission will be the
Titan IIIE-Centaur combina
tion also to be used for the
1975 Viking mission to Mars
and a 1977 Mariner-Saturn
mission.
Space agency officials say
the Uranus mission also could
supply information needed to
design spacecraft and plan
even more far-reaching
flights to the planets beyond
Saturn.
NASA’s Office of Space Sci
ence has assigned manage
ment responsibility for the
Uranus mission to the agen
cy’s Jet Propulsion Labora
tory, Pasadena, Calif.
Uranus, 1.78 billion miles
from the sun, has five known
orbiting moons, ranging in
size from about 200 to 500
. miles in diameter.
The planet spins rapidly at
an angle of about 90 degrees
to the ecliptic plane and has a
day of only 10.8 hours. Be
cause of its unusual tilt,
Uranus poles have long peri
ods in the sun or in total dark
ness. Its diameter is about
30,000 miles, making Uranus
the third largest planet in the
solar system, after Jupiter
and Saturn.
