— Griffin Daily News Wednesday, October 1,1975
about this provincial town
about 250 miles southeast of
Seoul.
The comfortable and vista
filled journey from the capi
tal is more than a trip into the
days before the birth of Christ
when Kyongju was the seat of
the Silla (pronounced shee
lah) dynasty — it is an oppor
tunity to grasp the essence of
this nation, a chance to see
both the very old and the very
new that mix harmoniously
and add up to South Korea.
On the outskirts of Kyongju
is its most famous treasure —
the magnificent Pulkuksa
Temple, a vast Buddhist
structure built 15 centuries
ago. Set on a hilly site amid
towering old trees, this quiet
temple packed with relics is a
living testimony to the splen
dor and brilliance of the Silla
period.
Not far away is Sokguram
Grotto, an Bth Century won
der whose statue of Buddha ’
catches the first rays of the
morning sun as it rises from
the East Sea over an eye-pop
ping series of valleys and
hills.
Kyongju’s many royal
tombs, temples and other
relics of ancient Silla —of
which it was the capital from
57 B.C. to 935 A.D. — make it
a destination whose popular
ity with both Korean and for
eign visitors is second only to
Seoul’s.
The many attractions in
and around Seoul explain why
South Korea appears more
Point blank
Even hard workers
have to gbof off
By JOHN C. MCJON
Copley News Service
Dear John:
I work hard for my boss.
The harder I work, the
more work he expects. Just
how hard should a person
work?
Hard Worker
Dear Hard Worker:
If you are an average work
er, you should loaf 45 per cent
of the eight-hour working
day.
If you actually are a “hard
worker,” you should loaf only
about 30 per cent of the day.
Those, as 1 recall, are the
statistics from a Dunn’s Re
view magazine I read several
years ago.
The hardest-working per
son probably thinks he works
100 per cent of the eight
hours. Not so. He, too, must
loaf at least 30 per cent of the
time.
A person working at 70 per
cent capacity can do so only
for a short period. Otherwise,
he is subject to mistakes,
nervous disorder and doesn’t
have time to plan ahead.
Be careful, hard worker, or
you will begin pitying your
poor employer. And, by golly,
he should be pitied.
It behooves him to force
hard workers to loaf and
work hard to get the loafers
to work.
Dear John:
My wife hates cigars.

frequently than ever in the
itineraries of more and more
American visitors to Asia.
In the discovery process,
chances are you’ll stop being
a tourist ... and become a
traveler.
Several tour operators are
now including Korea in their
Orient packages. And pack
ages, as your travel agent no
doubt will tell you, are the
least-expensive way to take a
holiday either at home or
abroad.
One such offering is Kuoni
Travel’s 15-day Orient Impe
rial Tour. It costs about $1,200
per person and while it con
centrates on the key sights of
Japan, it does include three
days in Korea. Price covers
air transportation, first-class
hotels, transfers, sight-seeing
and other features — quite a
bargain considering that the
normal round-trip air fare
from the West Coast is $1,162.
And if you are a veteran
you can visit Korea on the
house any time from now
through the summer of ’76.
This government-sponsored
program was designed to
show in a practical way the
Korean people’s gratitude to
American and other soldiers
who liberated this country in
1945 and later fought during
the Korean War. The only ex
pense is about $630 for a spe
cial air fare ticket on Korean
Air Lines from Los Angeles to
Seoul and return.
I love them. In fact, I chain
smoke cigars all day.
My wife complains that the
house smells, as do my
clothes, hair and breath.
I tell her cigars are better
than sex.
She answers:
“They had better be.
Phew!”
She has the last word. Do
you have any word for me to
pass along?
Cigar Smoker
Dear Cigar Smoker:
I will pass on a story that
was often told by Hal Perry,
who played the part of the
“Great Gildersleeve” on the
Fibber McGee and Molly ra
dio show years ago.
I quote:
“You’ll notice that I smoke
cigars.
“I got married a few years
ago, and my wife objected to
the cigars.
“Therefore, I switched to
cigarettes.
“But the loose tobacco kept
getting in my mouth, and I
went around spitting. My wife
objected to that.
“So I switched to filter cig
arettes. However, I had to
suck so hard to get smoke out
that I got a hernia.
“That was when I lost my
wife.
“Now I am back on
cigars.”
