MIAMI (UPI) — Hurricane
Gladys gathered speed in the
Atlantic today and turned its
100-mile-an-hour winds on a
course aimed at the Eastern
Seaboard.
Forecasters in the National
Hurricane Center said, howe
ver, that “it’s too early to tell”
if the hurricane offer a threat
to the coast.
Gladys’ center was located
this morning about 575 miles
south-southeast of Cape Hat
teras, N.C., near latitude 27.5
north, longitude 72.5 west, and
moving toward the northwest at
17 m.p.h.
Body of woman found
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) - The body of a missing
Savannah woman was found in the Wright River near
Daufuskie Island, it was reported Tuesday.
Jasper County, S. C., authorities said the body of Mrs.
Johnnie Mae Ford, 27, was found Sunday. It had apparent
ly been in the water for seven to 10 days.
An autopsy was being conducted at Charleston to deter
mine the cause of death.
Couple dies at fair
ATLANTA (UPI) — An Indian couple died of apparent
carbon monoxide poisoning in their van at the
Southeastern Fairgrounds Tuesday, authorities said.
Fulton County police said there was no indication of foul
play in the death of Francis Swicord, 59, and his wife,
Katie Belle Swicord, believed to be in her 50s, both of the
Creek Indian tribe in Cairo, Ga.
The couple had apparently turned on the motor of the
van sometime Monday night. An iceman who noticed the
vehicle idling notified fair officials who broke in and found
the bodies in sleeping positions.
Sgt. M. E. Horton of the county medical examiner’s
office said an autopsy would be conducted.
That position was a change
more to the northwest and a
gain in forward speed from 15
m.p.h.
“Gladys is expected to turn
more to the north at the same
speed later today or tonight,”
said the advisory. “But no
significant change in strength is
expected today.”
A move to the north would
lessen the threat to the East
Coast.
The hurricane pushed gale
winds 150 miles to the north
and 100 miles to the south of its
center.
Creature was
young man
in gorilla suit
JOPLIN, Mo. (UPI) — For a week residents were
terrified by reported sightings of a 300-pound, hairy
monster with red, glowing eyes. Police finally tracked
down the “creature” —a young man in a gorilla suit.
Police Chief Bernard Kakuske said Tuesday no charges
have been filed against the youths involved. But Kakuske
said the culprit was lucky he was not shot by some panic
stricken monster hunter.
Kakuske showed newsmen the gorilla costume, which
he said had been rented for sl2 from a rental agency by
three Joplin youths.
“It was just a hoax, but the costume was really quite
realistic,” Kakuske said. “Under poor lighting conditions,
I suppose you just wouldn’t be able to tell what you were
seeing.”
He declined to identity the youths. He said they were
released and no charges are pending.
During the past week, several residents reported seeing
a 300-pound, hairy monster about seven feet tall with a
slightly humped back and red, glowing eyes the size of a
half dollar.
Kakuske said officers discovered the hoax by tracing
the rental of the costume.
“I find it an act of God the boys didn’t get shot,” he said.
“We had people roaming around with guns ready to shoot
the monster. It’s just lucky they didn’t cross the paths of
one of those people.
“It’s really kind of a dangerous game to play, some
people can get genuinely scared,” Kakuske said. “I sure
as .... hope they’ll be more relaxed now.”
Before the hoax was revealed another official
discounted the monster theory and said tracks found near
the scene of one of the monster sightings were those of a
large dog.
“They’re just large prints, with some of them four or
five inches in length,” said Donald L. Sensker, director of
the law enforcement program at Missouri Southern State
College. “But there’s nothing I could classify as human or
primate.”
Seneker said he also tested some hair samples
discovered at one of the sightings, but said they turned out
to be hog bristles.

Emperor Hirohito
honors MacArthur
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (UPI)
S — Emperor Hirohito, on his
first trip to the United States,
made a point of honoring the
S memory of the American
g general who accepted the
g surrender of Japan in 1945 and
S then helped rebuild modern
Japan.
The only Japanese monarch
ever to make a state visit to
the United States ordered a
jij: wreath of white mums and red
carnations placed on his behalf
at the MacArthur Memorial in
<■ nearby Norfolk.
Japanese officials said his
decision Tuesday to honor the
>;• late Gen. Douglas MacArthur,
:;i; the commander of allied
occupying forces who kept
Hirohito on the throne after
World War 11, was an
S impromptu one. Diplomatic
sources said the emperor could
S not place the wreath personally
because of possible political
repercussions at home.
Hirohito and Empress Naga
:s ko also will receive MacAr
s• thur’s widow when they visit
New York Sunday.
They planned to spend today
touring some of the relics of
S colonial America, including the
governor’s palace and the
House of Burgesses dating from
the late 1700 s.
The official part of their
goodwill visit begins Thursday
when President and Mrs. Ford
S; formally receive them at the
White House.
The emperor and empress
$ were accompanied on their 14-
hour flight from Tokyo by 40
servants and members of their
S court.
Seaweed Garden
The Sargasso Sea, stretch
ing almost halfway across the
North Atlantic, is covered for
miles with huge patches of
seaweed. Slow circular cur
rents tend to keep the
seaweed — Sargassum —
£ congregated there.
They were warmly greeted
by several hundred persons at
Williamsburg airport, where a
red carpet was rolled out, a fife
and drum band played and
spectators waved flowers and
homemade Japanese flags.
Two young conservationists
raised banners denouncing the
killing of whales by Japanese
fishermen, but the imperial
couple did not see the
demonstration.
They sampled American coo
king, strolled in the secluded
grounds near their apartments
and did some bird watching.
