Ask Dick Kleiner
Single Kate Smith
By Dick Kleiner
DEAR DICK: I am curious about Kate Smith, as I am a
staunch fan of hers and always will be. Is she married or has she
ever been married? — MRS. EMMA CHAVEZ, Pueblo, Colo.
Kate welcomes your staunchness. Performers need all the
staunch fans they can get. Miss Smith is still a bachelor girl; she
has never been married.
DEAR DICK: Could you please tell me where I could purchase
a tape of the theme from S.W.A.T.? And could you tell me please
if Mark Shera is really Italian, and is that his real name? — A
READER, Noblesville, Ind.
The theme from S W A T, has not been recorded, so purchasing
it will be tough. As for Mark Shera, that’s his real name and he’s
not Italian, he's Jewish.
DEAR DICK: Could you please tell me what became of Buford
Pusser’s children? How old are they now? I mean his real
children. Where are they living now? — C.A., Mobile, Ala.
The late, great lawman left two children. His wife had others
by another marriage, but I assume you mean just Buford’s. His
son, Michael, is 20, married and off on his own somewhere. His
daughter, Dwana, 14, is living in Adamsville, Tenn., with
Buford’s parents.
DEAR DICK: I want to become a fashion designer and go to »
college for it. But 1 have designed something for Cher. I don’t
know how to get it to her. Could you tell me how? — JANINE
RANELIN, Steubenville, Ohio
Don’t aim so high so fast. Cher has a platoon of professional
designers, headed by Bob Mackie, who turn out her outfits.
Design, rather, for yourself and your friends first. And, of course,
fulfill your plan and go to college and then see what happens.
DEAR DICK: Whatever happened to Alberta Grant and Alan
Feinstein, who played Liz and Jim Fields on Edge of Night? Are
either or both of them expected to return to the series? — A FAN,
St. Albans, Vt.
Both of them, according to CBS, left the show to pursue their
own careers Miss Grant is working in New York and Feinstein
came to Hollywood. He did a pilot (Super Cops) which didn’t sell.
The characters they played were not killed off, so they may be
brought back with other actors.
DEAR DICK: A few years ago, there was a western on TV with
Walter Brennan and Dack Rambo. It was about a boy searching
for his father, an outlaw. Could you please tell me the name of the
show? - GUY PRICE, Dixon, 111.
That was The Guns of Will Sonnett.
DEAR DICK: Was there ever a movie called ‘‘The Diary of
Anne Frank?” If so, who played Anne Frank and what year was
the movie made? — IRITA TEW, Mobile, Ala.
Yes, there was a movie called ‘‘The Diary of Anne Frank” and
it was a good one. Millie Perkins played Anne Frank in the ’59
film.
DEAR DICK: Could you tell me if the man who plays Steve
Austin on The Six Million Dollar Man is married and, if he is, who
to? - KRISTIN MEYERS, Lethbridge, Alta., Can.
Yes, Lee Majors, who plays Austin, is married His wife,
model-actress Farrah Fawcett, now calls herself Farrah
Fawcett-Majors. (If she had married Dr. Leakey, would she be
Fawcett-Leakey?)
DEAR DICK: Could you please tell me if Dennis James and Art
James are related? — MISS M.J.C., Jersey Shore, Pa.
Yes, I could And I will. They're not.
DEAR DICK: My husband says Cloris Leachman starred in
Born Free. I say no. Please tell us who was the female star in
that series. — JAYNE BELL, Silverhill, Ala.
One lonesome victory for the wives. It wasn’t Cloris, it was
Diana Muldaur.
Showbeat
There’s no business
like show business
By Dick Kleiner
HOLLYWOOD - (NEA) -
Even if you're a tremendously
successful businessman in
another field, that doesn’t
automatically qualify you as a
moviemaker. John Crean found
that out the hardway.
Crean is hugely successful in
his own field He is chairman of
the board of Fleetwood Enter
prises, a company which owns
the first, second and third
biggest manufacturers of RVs
— mobile homes, motor homes,
campers. Fleetwood is this
year celebrating its 25th an
niversary.
A few years ago. Fleetwood
went public and Crean found
himself with a lot of money to
invest, so he invested some in
making movies. He financed
"Hammersmith Is Out.” with
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard
Burton, and "Man and Boy,"
with Bill Cosby. Neither was a
big success.
“I lost around three million,”
Crean says, “so I decided I'd
better learn something about
movie production — I’m a
production man from way back.
So he got a cheap script and
made his own movie, at his
ranch in San Juan Capistrano.
Owner of ship
pleads innocent
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (UPI) —
The owner of a clipper ship
which sank mysteriously in the
Savannah harbor last March
pleaded not guilty Tuesday to
federal charges of obstructing a
waterway.
Ronald Craig, of Bellingham,
Wash., owner of the Cruz Del
Sur, has failed to meet several
deadlines the federal govern
ment has given him to raise the
ship.
He said he has been unable to
remove it from the harbor
“because we haven’t been able
to obtain the necessary equip
ment in Savannah.” Craig said
money was also a problem
since the job would cost about
$40,000.
However, Craig, who reenact
ed a historic voyage through
the South Seas to Australia for
that country’s Bicentennial,
said he hoped to have the ship
raised in time for the American
Bicentennial celebration.
It was never meant to be
released, just sort of a produc
tion experiment. Crean watch
ed every penny.
“I discovered,” he says,
"that it only cost me around
SIOO,OOO for the actual produc
tion. That compared to $1
million for Hammersmith’ and
$750,000 for Man and Boy.’ I
realized that I had lost $900,000
on the first one and $650,000 on
the second — just through
wasted money.”
Now, with that experiment
behind him, he figures he knows
a little something about what
he’s doing in the movie
business And so he’s anxious to
make another movie.
"I want to do it,” he says, “-
just so I can prove to myself
that I can make a good film and
a profitable one.”
Sidney Sheldon, after a long
and noble career in movies and
TV, has found peace and hap
piness in another field — he is
now one of our more successful
novelists.
"I don't miss the movie and
TV business at all," says
Sheldon, who wrote more than
23 movies and created The Pat
ty Duke Show and I Dream of
Jeannie for TV. "I’ve been
writing since I was 17 —1 ac
tually sold my first thing when I
was 13 — and this is the first
time I’ve had complete
freedom. I love every minute of
it. I can’t wait to go in and write
nowadays.”
For his first novel, “The Nak
ed Face,” he got a SI,OOO ad
vance. Then came his current
blockbuster, “The Other Side of
Midnight.” For his next novel,
which is almost finished, he got
a SIOO,OOO advance. That’s
success.
Sheldon says he won’t have
anything to do with the coming
movie version of "The Other
Side of Midnight." At least,
that's his current feeling. But if
the movie version turns out
badly, he may change his mind
for the next one
"Then I may have to go into
the business again,” he says,
“just to protect myself.”
He also says it’s harder to
write novels than screenplays
or TV scripts.
"In a screenplay,” he says,
"all you have to do is say,
George enters room.' You
don’t have to describe George
or the room. But, in a novel, you
have to describe both.
