Bears banged
up for F.P.
The Griffin Bears are
working overtime this week on
offense, trying to create more
consistency.
“I think we’re looking too
much for the big play,” Coach
Max Dowis said. “What we need
is more consistency.”
The Bears played a
tremendous defensive game
last Friday in a 14-0 victory over

Coach Dowis plans to go with

“I was encouraged by our
play last week. We cut down on
our mistakes considerably,
although we still have plenty of
room for improvement in some
areas.
“Each week it gets tougher; if
a team doesn’t continue to
improve, they leave themselves
hobbled by an ankle injury and
it’s doubtful he’ll play. Bass left
the LaGrange game in the
fourth quarter. His replace
ment, Tony Scott, came up with
a pass interception to stop a
Granger drive.
Forest Park has a young foot
ball team that plays very good

“I try to impress on our kids
the fact that our past record is
worthless come Friday night,”
the coach said.
Flint River, 3-2, should
provide a more than adequate
test for Coach Peck’s Warriors.
The Wildcats are steadily
improving although still in their
first season.
Barnesville’s Ronnie Silva
had his second straight 100-yard
plus game rushing against
Beechwood last Friday.
While Barnesville’s defensive
end Freddy Miller continued his
outstanding play with 12
unassisted tackles and three
assists, Barnesville’s other
defensive end, Ty Griffin, made
the play of the game,
recovering a fumble and racing
61 yards for the winning TD.
Linebacker Robbie Tenney
added and interception to halt a
Beechwood drive in the fourth
quarter.

Pittsburgh
going with best
By POHLA SMITH
PITTSBURGH (UPI) - The
Pittsburgh Pirates learned to
their dismay last year that
good pitching can, and often
does, overcome good hitting.
Don Sutton of Los Angeles
dominated Pirate sluggers in
the National League champion
ship series won last year by the
Dodgers.
Pirate manager Danny Mur
taugh, however, still tends to
put more weight on the theory
that good hitting is more
important than pitching.
But just in case that isn’t
true, he’s going with his top
pitcher in the first game
against the Reds, All-Star
lefthander Jerry Reuss.
Murtaugh Tuesday tapped
Jim Rooker as the probable
starter for the second game
and rookie John Candelaria for
the third.
Murtaugh said it will be
tough to guess what the
determining factor will be in
the bestrof-five series because
the teams are so similar in
makeup.
But, remembering Sutton’s
two playoff victories last year,
Murtaugh added: "Any manag
er hopes he can get a pitcher
hot at this time.”
“I just know that Reuss is the
guy to win the first ball game
the end-of-the-season banquet —
at the center of the table as the
main course.
"What else do you do with a
pig?” asked middle guard
Randy Washburn. "We plan to
celebrate the end of the season
with a big party, and we’re
going eat our mascot then.”
The players got the pig,
nicknamed “Big Red,” as a
sort of good luck charm to help
them maintain their unbeaten
record (they’re presently 3-0)
through the season.
“It’s just a 60-pound pig,”
said Coach Tom Sargent. “They
want it to grow with them
through the season. When they
get in trouble they gather
around the pig and touch it for
‘hog power.’”
The team has even adopted a
new nickname to match its new
mascot: although they’re still
officially called the Cowboys,
the defensive line has adopted
the moniker “The Root Hogs.”
Murtaugh
PITTSBURGH (UPI) - Tim
Murtaugh, son of Pittsburgh
Pirates’ manager Danny Mur
taugh, Tuesday was named
manager of the Charleston
Charlies of the International
League, the Pirates’ No. 1 farm
club.
The younger Murtaugh, who
began as a catcher in the
Pirates’ organization, managed

last season. He replaces Steve
Demeter at Charleston.
for me,” he said.
Reuss had an 18-11 record —
his best ever — with a 2.54
earned run average. He has
been even more effective
against the Reds, holding them
to a 2.40 ERA. The Pirates had
a 6-6 record with the Reds in
the regular season, but Reuss
personally was 3-1 against
them.
