'Rama staggers
its opponents
Southeast Football Roundup
By United Press International
You can’t stagger against
Alabama and stay in the same
stadium, according to Missis
sippi coach Ken Cooper.
“Alabama is the kind of team
that likes to take the lead early
and get the other team to
stagger and once you stagger,
they try to blow you out of the
park,” Cooper said Tuesday as
he prepared Ole Miss for a
Saturday battle with the Tide in
Birmingham.
Cooper concentrated on his
running game in Tuesday’s
workout and said his offense is

“We opened up more over the
weekend, mixing plays a little
better,” he said of the Rebels’
24-8 win over Southern Missis
sippi.
Bear Bryant wasn’t too
pleased with Alabama’s offense
in Tuesday’s practice.
“We worked on all phases of
the game plan, but I don’t know
how much progress we’re
making,” said Bryant. “The
offense had a lot of fumbles.”
Coach Bob Tyler ran Missis
sippi State through two and
one-half hour review of South-
ern Mississippi’s offensive and
defensive formations Tuesday,
but rain cut short Southern’s
drills after 50 minutes.
Louisiana State held a
lengthy drill on passing Tues
day as coach Charlie McClen
don sought to correct
breakdowns that led to three
interceptions by Rice last
Saturday.
“We still have a long way to
improve and we must play to
the best of our capabilities to
beat a team of Florida’s
caliber,” said McClendon.
Casey seemed to see
the end coming
GLENDALE, Calif. (UPI) -
Casey Stengel seemed to see
the end coming for some time
before his death.
In his last public appearance,
Stengel, who died of cancer
Monday night at age 85,
remarked that he had “some
thing wrong inside me” in a
classic example of “Sten
gelese” that the renowned
baseball manager made fa
mous.
“I am very delighted now I
am still alive and shaking,”
Stengel opened a speech to a
lunch for the Dodgers Old
Timers’ Club on Aug. 23. “I’m
the only one left now that was
with the Dodgers still alive at
this here time when they
started. I think what I have
now—l think I’ll be over it in a
month or two—l think I have
something wrong inside me and
maybe it’s going to my head.”

Funeral services for Stengel,
the top winning manager in the
history of organized baseball,
will be held Monday at 1 p.m.
at the Church of the Recession
al in Forest Lawn Memorial
Park, where he will be buried
in the Court of Freedom.
He will lie in state Sunday at
the Scovern Mortuary. The
family asked that instead of
flowers, mourners make dona
tions to the Association of
Professional Baseball Players
in Long Beach, Calif.
In his 55 years in baseball,
Stengel played for five major
league teams and managed
four. As manager of the New
York Yankees from 1949 to 1960
he won 10 American league
pennants and seven world
series, including five in a row.
He managed the New York
Mets for five years until he quit
on doctor’s orders in 1965.

Foster important
cog in Red Machine
CINCINNATI (UPI) —
George Foster, with a personal
“credo” to go along with his
home run bat, has emerged as
an important cog in the “Big
Red Machine.”
Foster, worried six months
ago that his fledgling baseball
career might be withering
away, is now a solid starter
and will hit right behind
sluggers Johnny Bench and
Tony Perez when the National
League playoffs against Pitts
burgh open here Saturday.
In baseball ever since 1968,
Foster got his best opportunity
to play regularly this season
when Pete Rose was moved to
third base. It opened up left
field for Foster—if he proved
he could hit consistently.
Foster, who will be 27 in a
couple of months, made the
most of the opportunity and
wound slamming 23 homers,
second only to club leader
Bench’s 28, and batting a solid
.300.
A Baptist from Tuscaloosa,
Ala., the soft-spoken Foster
recites prayers and his own
credo before and sometimes
during games.
“Don’t get me wrong,” he
says, “I don’t pray for hits. My

little ballpark prayer goes
something like this:
‘Let me do the best I can.
I’m thankful for the chances I
have.’
“And,” says Foster with a
smile, “I usually add, ‘I won’t
complain about the bad hops.’”
A couple of years ago the
Reds shipped Foster to their
Indianapolis farm club and that
long season back in the minors
awakened George.
“I started to reflect on what
was happening to my career,”
he recalls.

What does it
take to make
Bear happy?
ATLANTA (UPI) — One has to wonder what it takes to
make Bear Bryant happy.
After Alabama routed Clemson, 56-0, one Saturday and
previously unbeaten Vanderbilt, 40-7, the next, Bryant
had this to say:
“I’m concerned about our team...we’ve got to continue
to improve. We missed a lot of tackles against Vanderbilt
(which had 91 total run-pass yards). Our offense (which
scored four touchdowns and four field goals) bogged down
near the goalline too much and our coverage on kicks
wasn’t real good.”
Bryant would never admit it publicly, but he would like
to run up big scores every week to get Alabama, No. 2
before being upset by Missouri, back in the running for the
national championship.
After losing to Missouri, Alabama tumbled to 18th, but
climbed back to 11th after crushing Clemson and is now up
to No. 9.
One has to like the Florida Gators chances for sharing
this year’s Southeastern Conference championship with
Alabama.
The Gators, never first in 42 previous seasons of SEC
football, don’t play Alabama this season and they also
don’t play Tennessee which has shown a lot more
offensive muscle than had been expected.
They took a big step toward that title last Saturday
when they beat Mississpi State on the road. The biggest
roadblock facing the Gators is their own unpredictability.
Just when it seems they’re on their way to a super season
they annually get knocked off by some team they should
have beaten.
Leon Douglas, Alabama’s 6-foot-10 All-America center
candidate, had 16 stitches over his eye after being cut in a
game between the Denver Nuggets and the team the
United States is sending to the Pan-Am games in Mexico
next week.
Douglas had held Denver rookie David Thompson —
college player of the year last season at North Carolina
State — to just two points in the 15 minutes before he was
injured.
