Court handles 31 child cases
Cases involving 31 children
were handled in Spalding
Juvenile Court this week.
Eleven of the youngsters
had been charged with crimes
and 20 were involved in seven
custody cases.
Burglary topped the list of
offenses, with five boys being
sentenced on that charge.
Judge Andrew Whalen, Jr.,
committed four of the offenders
to the State Department of
Human Resources which will
probably place them in
detention homes.

They included a 16-year-old
who was charged with two
counts of burglary and violation
of his after care status; a boy,
14, who was charged with
burglary and also was to have
psychiatric evaluation; a boy,
16, who violated his intensive
supervision and who will not be
allowed to return to his home
when he is released from the
detention center; and a 14-year
old who committed a burglary.
A boy, 15, was ordered bound
over to Spalding Superior Court
to face charges of robbery by
force. He had violated his after
care status and was not
amendable to treatment
through available juvenile
facilities.
The case of a 15-year-old girl
charged with forgery was
dismissed.
A boy, 15, who lives in another
county was returned to his
home county and adjudged
delinquent. It was strongly re
commended that his after care
status be revoked.
Police will pick up a 16-year
old who did not show up in court
after obstructing an officer
and drinking under age.
The residence of an 11-year
old was changed because he
violated his probation by
criminal tresspass and stealing.
He will continue on probation.
Two boys were given
probated sentences to work on a
newly formed work release
program. One, 16, is to work one
year for harrassment and viola
tion of probation. The other, 15,
is to work one year for burglary.
In the child custody cases,
three children may continue in
temporary custody of their
grandparents. Four children
were placed permanently with
their grandmother. Parental
rights in two cases involving
three children were terminated
and the children were placed
with the Georgia Department of
Human Resources.
Ten children involved in three
cases were placed in the tem
porary custody of the Depart
ment of Family and Children
Service.

Held without bond
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) — Michael A. Gregory, 20, and
Connie M. England, 28, both of Savannah, were arraigned
and jailed without bond Wednesday in connection with the
kidnaping, robbery and shooting of a Savannah man.
The pair, charged with armed robbery, kidnaping,
assualt with intent to murder and auto theft, will face a
preliminary hearing Oct. 7.
The victim, Robert Allen, a 58-year-old brickmason,
was reported in stable condition after being shot several
times by his abductors who stole S7OO in cash and his car.
Police were still searching for the third suspect in the
case.
Dr. Arch McEwen
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) - Dr. R. Arch McEwen, of
Atlanta, was elected president of the Georgia Dental
Association at the group’s 1975-76 convention, it was
announced Wednesday.
McEwen, a native of Alberta, Canada, has practiced
denistry in Atlanta since 1955 and taught at Emory
University’s Dental School for five years prior to that
time.
Flynt votes for raise
WASHINGTON (UPI) — Seven of Georgia’s House
members approved Wednesday President Ford’s plan to
give a 5 per cent pay raise to some 3 million federal
employes and military personnel as well as Congress
itself.
Only Rep. Andrew Young of Atlanta voted against the
measure, which passed the House 278 to 123 on a roll call
vote. Reps. Bo Ginn of Millen and Bill Stuckey of Eastman
did not vote on the measure.
Georgians voting for the measure were Reps. Jack
Brinkley of Columbus, John Flynt Jr. of Griffin, Phil
Landrum of Jaspar, Elliott Levitas of Atlanta, Dawson
Mathis of Albany, Larry McDonald of Marietta and Bob *
Stephens of Athens.
Ed Robinson wins
MILLEDGEVILLE,Ga. (UPI) — Incumbant Ed Robin
son, a white businessman, defeated Collins P. Lee, a black
school teacher, in runoff election Wednesday for a city
council post.
Robinson polled 1,045 votes to Lee’s 818. Lee was one of
two unsuccessful black candidates for council seats in the
September primary.

homecoming

land, Tenn., assistant general
overseer of the Church of God,
will conduct revival services at
Central Lake Church of God on
High Falls road Oct. 24, 25 and
26.
Dr. Lowery was scheduled to
be at the church this weekend to
participate in a revival and
homecoming services but had to
cancel until the latter part of
October.
The Rev. Walter Langdon,
former pastor, will be the
homecoming day speaker. He
will speak at the 11 a.m. and 2
p.m. services. A special singing
service will be held at 7 p.m.
Special singers for the
evening service will be a. group
from Lee College of Cleveland,
Tenn., the Skinner Family, the
Ladies Trio and the general and
youth choir groups from the
church. The Whitaker family of
McDonough will be featured at
the 2 p.m. service.
