Polly’s Pointers
Crocheter calls
* for direction
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY — Many years ago I had a bookmark that
was crocheted in the shape of a cross For a long time I
have looked for this pattern but with no luck 1 am not good
at improvising directions so I would appreciate having
them very much Perhaps someone who has made one
would send the instructions to the column, — MRS W H.
DEAR MRS. W.H. — I am sure we will be hearing from
some reader who knows how to crochet such a bookmark.
- POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with the size of both men’s
and women's billfolds They should be from one-quarter to one
half inch wider and longer to make it easier to add or remove
folding money, change and cards Also a welcome addition to a
billfold would be a plastic holder for two or three extra single
keys just in case the house, car or garage keys were misplaced. I
now use my change section for this and they have been a godsend
many times. — JOSEPHINE A
DEAR POLLY — If you have a toddler who may shut a door on
his fingers put a mail order catalogue, open in half, over the top
of the door. The book will stop the door from closing all the way.
- JANET.
DEAR POLLY — Kaye wrote that her Pet Peeve was with the
shampoo bottles that do not have squeeze adapter tops since too
much is used or spilled. My husband solved this for himself by
drilling a small hole in the cover Now he gets just the squeeze he
wants and has no more spills in the shower. — MRS M.V.
DEAR POLLY — I know what a tough problem Mildred has
with the crust inside her aluminum whistling tea kettle. I cleaned
mine by using good strong vinegar, undiluted. Just pour in a
generous amount, even fill the kettle if you like, and let it stand 24
hours or so Then clean it out with soda water The scales inside
the kettle will either dissolve or come out in pieces. Keep rinsing
until water comes out clear. — MRS. V.S.
DEAR POLLY — Water stains on washable curtains (from
rain or moisture condensation from the windows) can be easily
removed by washing in a solution of washing soda. Directions on
the box for general washing work for curtains, too. (Always test
any different product used on today's materials for effect on
color and fabric content). I use washing soda for so many things,
especially for cleaning in the bathroom. It does not scratch and
can be sprinkled on a cloth or sponge for spot cleaning —
PHOEBE
DEAR POLLY — I have found an easy way to blanch
vegetables for the freezer. I use my deep fat fryer. The basket is
ideal for carrying to the sink for plunging vegetables into ice cub
ed water, thus eliminating drippy trips from stove to sink. Water
in the nan stays boiling hot. — NELLIE.

Dr. Lamb
Hypoglycemia
is real problem
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D
DEAR DR LAMB - I have
been diagnosed by two different
doctors as having
hypoglycemia. Both ran a six
hour glucose test to confirm the
diagnosis. I was placed on a
high protein diet, but no
vitamins.
I started to black out after be
ing on a high protein diet for
two years and went to a
medical clinic. The doctor in
charge of metabolism stated
there is no such thing as low
blood sugar (functional) and
that everyone has low blood
sugar readings in the 50’s and
60's on a glucose test
He stated the U.S. was the
only country that uses this
diagnosis, that there is no proof
to back up such a diagnosis and
people with this diagnosis real
ly need to see a psychiatrist,
not to be put on a high protein
diet.
All I know is that I still have
my excessive fatigue and
shakey spells along with the
lightheaded feeling, and I
sometimes pass out. I have held
hard working positions for a
woman but can no longer keep
up because of this. I don't have
any other problems that would
lead one to think of a psy
chiatrist, and my husband
agrees with this.
I’m 36, weigh 132, and work
part time. If you were me what
would you do? At this point I
would certainly appreciate any
help I can get to start enjoying
life again.
DEAR READER — It’s true
many people are diagnosed as
“low blood sugar” who really
have other problems, including
anxiety. Whether that is the
case with you or not I wouldn’t
know from the information at
hand.
You may have anxieties that
you don’t recognize, these may
lead to overbreathing and cause
some of your symptoms. Or you
could have low blood sugar/
Functional hypoglycemia is
real. It is adequately discussed
in leading texts of medicine
(Beeson and McDermott 1975).
One well-recognized cause is
abnormal function of the pan
creas that sometimes precedes
development of diabetes.
Hypoglycemia occurs in people
who have had part of their
stomach removed And. in a
mild form in some other people
in a similar manner. These peo
ple often eat only car
bohydrates (starches and
sweets) The stomach empties
rapidly in the absence of fat and
protein, and the overload
results in the reaction.
What should you do? First
keep an open mind to the
possibility that you have some
anxieties that you have not
come to grips with. Second, do
a little experimenting.
Change your eating habits so
that you eliminate all concen
trated sweets — sugars, jams,
etc. Include in your diet whole
wheat bread and bulky
vegetables such as salads that
will slow the emptying of the
stomach. Balance out your diet
with lean protein such as lean
round steak and fish Avoid the
sweet beverages (stop coffee
and cigarettes entirely), sweet
rolls, and include in your
breakfast some protein, even
steak if necessary, but don’t
eliminate the carbohydrates en
tirely — even for breakfast.
Then eat small meals and eat
some of these foods listed above
between meals. Also start a
good exercise program for
yourself, gradually. By
providing a balanced diet and
avoiding sweets, you may be
surprised how much improve
ment you will have.
For more information on low
blood sugar, write to me in care
