What to do for
ballpoint blues
By Polly Cramer
Polly’s Problem
DEAR POLLY — I discovered several blue ball
point ink stains on the sleeve of my cream colored
vinyl jacket I have tried saddle soap, ink erasers and
even toothpaste on these marks but they remain The
instructions with the jacket warn against dry cleaning
or machine washing the jacket so what is the solution 9
- B R
DEAR B.R. — You really are in a spot. Some of
these miracle fabrics are not always such miracles.
V.R. wrote that she had the same problem with the
same sort of fabric so this is for both of you. The
following are ways to remove ball point ink stains BUT
on a fabric that sounds almost untouchable you must
be sure to test first on an inconspicuous place like the
back of the hem. Petroleum jelly rubbed into such a
stain, washed off with a detergent solution and then
rinsed is one. A cloth soaked in dry cleaning fluid is
another cure. A foremost laundry authority found or
dinary hair spray applied to such a stain and allowed to
dry before being washed off is also a very effective
remover. 1 have had such a stain loosen when the
spray hit it and start to spread on some fabrics but this
can be wiped away with a tissue and application
repeated until it no longer liquifies. Wash dry spray off
and stains with it. — POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is that every time I buy
gas for the car, unless I remember to tell the attendant to fill
it until the pump clicks off, he will stand there and force in
every drop the tank will hold. After my car has been parked
a few hours 1 find streaks down the side and a little pool of
that "scarce" and expensive gasoline on the ground after it
has expanded and overflowed the tank. — BETTY S.
DEAR POLLY — Many of us will soon be baking fruit
cakes for holiday gifts Buy round cans with lids, line with
foil, grease well and bake the cakes in them as called for in
the recipe After a cake has cooled remove the foil, wrap
cake in new foil or plastic wrap, return to the can and put on
the cover. I have done this for years and it saves looking for
a container after the cake is baked and it fits the can to a T.
- MARION
Polly's note — Why not save coffee cans that come with
plastic lids and use them for this? — POLLY.

DEAR DR. LAMB - I have
been a diabetic for about five
years. The cause of my condi
tion is an infection of the pan
creas at one time. This
weakened it to a point where
it doesn't function. Will you
please let me know what
effects this would have and
what harm it will do to one’s
body? Can it cause gangrene?
Why doesn’t the doctor
remove it?
DEAR READER -
Diabetes is commonly
associated with abnormal
function of the islets of
Langerhans, the tiny islands
of specialized tissue inside the
pancreas. It is true that an in
flammation of the pancreas
may lead to damage of these
small islets and cause
diabetes. Recently it has been
observed that there is a close
correlation between diabetes
in childhood and mumps. The
mumps may involve the pan
creas in the same way they in
volve the salivary glands at
the angle of the jaw.
The pancreas has a lot of
other functions, and the rest
of it may be doing very well,
even if the islets are damag
ed. You need the enzymes
formed by the rest of the pan
creas for normal digestion.
There is no reason at all to
remove the pancreas and a
good many reasons not to if
you want to stay healthy
Even a weakened pancreas
that still provides needed en
zymes is better than none at
all, independent of whether in
sulin is formed in sufficient
quantities by the islets within
it.
There are innumerable
complications of diabetes, in
cluding gangrene if the cir
culation is involved. The best
way to avoid these is by
following good management
under a doctor's supervision
That usually means a good
dietary program and may or
may not mean that you will
also have to take insulin. The
range of possibilities are so
great that you have to adjust
the management to the in-

dividual situation.
Those who want more infor
mation on diabetes can write
to me in care of this
newspaper, P.O. Box 1551,
Radio City Station, New York,
NY 10019. Send 50 cents, a
long, stamped, self-addressed
envelope, and ask for The

tion and Management.
DEAR DR LAMB -
Recently my sister-in-law
died of a heart attack. She was
only 27 years old A doctor and
a nurse both asked if she was
on birth control pills She was
I thought they were safe. Why
would they ask this?
DEAR READER - At the
time of your sister s death
there was no hard evidence
that birth control pills were
associated with heart attacks
The doctor and nurse probably
asked the question because of
the repeated association of
birth control pills with blood
clot formation.
Since then a British report
by the same group who first
stirred up a hornet's nest over
clots causing strokes have
reported an increased in
cidence of heart attacks in
women using the pill. Women
over 40 are said to be 4.7 times
as likely to have a heart at
tack if they take the pill com
pared to those who don’t. In
the 30 to 39 year age group the
rate is 2.8 times that in non
pill users.
Keep in mind that the in
cidence of heart attacks in
women below 40 is relatively
rare and below 30 almost non
existant. Even 10 times a zero
incidence isn’t very impor
tant.
The use of the pill in most
younger women is safe. The
Food and Drug Administra
tion has suggested that
women over 40 should use
some other method of birth
control That recommenda
tion may be premature and
reviews by other groups that
are sure to come, plus new
studies may change this view.
