Bears open basketball season Saturday
The Griffin Bears open the
1975-76 basketball season here
Saturday night against Central
of Macon and Coach Greg
Barrow will be at the helm for
the first time.
A change of coaches some
times handicaps a team until it
becomes accustom to a new
system.
That is not the case with
Griffin.
Coach Barrow is familiar
with Griffin players and

Boomer honored
MONTREAL—Maurice “Rocket” Richard (1), Guy Lafleur, and Bernie “Boom Boom”
Geoffrion (r) were presented with honorary plaques, prior to the Minnesota vs. Montreal
hockey game here yesterday. The three players were honored for being the only members
of the Montreal Canadians’ roster ever to have scored fifty or more goals during the regular
season. Richard and Geoffrion have since retired while Lafleur still plays with the
Canadiens. (UPI)
Sharks, Bulldogs, Eagles win
The Sharks, Eagles, Saints
and Bulldogs won games
yesterday in the Junior League
playoffs.
The Sharks ripped the
Cowboys 42-0. Ray Lemons
scored three touchdowns.
Kenneth Montgomery made two
and Zackery Buchanan made
one. Mike Parks, Stacy Am
mons and Mercury McCrary
and Allen Love scored extra
points.
The Eagles beat the Wolf
pack, 26-20.
Steve Mathews scored two

advanced through his “B” team
program. He’ll have no problem
learning what the players can
and can’t do.
Coach Barrow is in his fifth
season at GHS. He has coached
football and “B” team basket
ball since his arrival here.
The new basketball coach
plans to carry 12 to 14 players on
the varsity. Right now has only
10 on it
touchdowns for the Eagles.
Anthony McDougle and Andre
Holmes made one. Holmes,
Vincent Miller and Jimmy
Daniels made extra points.
Rocky Wimbush scored three
TDs and two extra points for the
Wolfpack.
Carey Griffin scored five
touchdowns and Kevin Peek
made an extra point in the
Saints’ 31-6 victory over the
Yellow Jackets. Spencer Miller
scored for the Jackets.
Dietrich Reid scored two
touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 36-6
Four players, three of them
starters a year ago, still are
involved with the football
program and will not be
available until that season ends.
The earliest those players
could join the basketball
program is Nov. 22 and it could
be much longer, depending, of
course, on how Griffin progress
in the football playoffs.
The overlapping of basketball
and football has become a
problem at Griffin High but it’s
win over the Tigers.
Eric Miller, William Dukes
and Jimmy Dennis made one
each. Dennis, Reid an Dukes
made extra points.
Hillhouse
gets deer
Bill Hillhouse of 824
Hallyburton street bagged a
seven point buck recently.
He was hunting in Upson
County.
one coaches don’t mind too
much.
They overlap because Griffin
is in the football playoffs.
The basketball Bears are
primarily a junior outfit. The
team includes nine juniors, four
seniors and a freshman.
Griffin is not blessed with an
abundance of heighth.
However, it does have speed
and quickness. Griffin will
utilize that speed with a run-

practicing about five weeks
under the watchful eye of Coach
Reggie Griffin, who will handle
Griffin’s “B” team. (Coach
Barrow was involved with foot
ball.)
Griffin’s probable starting
lineup for the opener has Brooks
Woodruff, a senior and Mark
Andrews, a junior, at guard;

Andy Smith, a senior and
Reginald Touchstone, a junior,
at forward and Cheyenne
Puckett, a senior, at center.
The reserves are Calvin
Dixon, a junior forward;
Jerome Garland, a junior
guard-forward; John King, a
junior guard-forward; Bubba
Mabbett, a junior forward and
Bubba Andrews, a freshman, at
center.
Andrews is the tallest player
at 6-5.
The four players still involved
with football are Kenny Ellison,
a senior forward; Curtis
Holmes, a junior guard; Craig
Nelms, a junior guard-forward
and Rodney Jester, a junior
guard.
Griffin will play three games
against Central. The “B” boys
play at 5:15, the varsity girls
take the court at 7 p.m. and the
Bears play immediately follow
ing the girls’ game.
