’Dogs’ fine play wins TV spot
(UPI) - The
decision to make Georgia-
Auburn this week’s regionally
televised game in the Southeast
was influenced by the outcome
of two of last Saturday’s
games.
The original intent, until Tech
was manhandled by Notre
Dame, was to go with Georgia
Tech-Navy. Second choice, had
the Gators not been upset by
Georgia, was to go with
Florida-Kentucky and the Ga-

tors’ bid for their first
Southeastern Conference title.
An ABC official sat across
the aisle from a Southeastern
Conference official on a flight
from Jacksonville to Atlanta
after the Georgia-Florida game
and the two agreed that
Georgia-Auburn was televi
sion’s best remaining choice.
That decision means that the
Georgia Bulldogs will be on
television three times in less
than three weeks — last week
against Florida, this Saturday
against Auburn, and the night
of Nov. 27 against Georgia
Tech...
Speaking of Georgia Tech,
the Yellow Jackets have a shot
at this year’s major-college
rushing title.
They are second at present,
with a 350-yard average, barely
five yards behind Michigan.
However, Navy poses a real
problem to the Tech wishbone
since the Middies, with one of
the top defensive units in the
country, have given up an
average of only 110 yards per
game on the ground...
If the television cameras had
been turned on Florida-Ken
tucky, fans across the South
east would have seen the top
two runners in this section of
the country.
Florida’s Jimmy Dußose,
fifth in the nation in rushing,
has gained 1,151 yards so far
this season, and Kentucky’s
Sonny Collins, the Southeastern
Conferece career record holder,
has gained 1,029.
Dußose, with two games to
go, needs 162 more yards to
break the single-season SEC
record set by John Dottley at
Ole Miss back in 1949. Collins,
who also has two more games,
is now 286 yards shy of a 4,000
career mark...
A report out of Miami that
the Orange Bowl has declined a
Bear Bryant request to delay
picking an opponent for the Big
Eight champ until Nov. 22
shouldn’t upset the Alabama
coach.
Alabama has failed to win in
its last eight bowl appearances
and, if as expected, Nebraska
wins the Big Eight champiosn
hip, the Crimson Tide could be
asking to extend that winless
bowl string to nine.
The Sugar Bowl appears to
offer Alabama a better chance
for a victory...
Georgia jumped squarely into
the Gator Bowl picture with
last week’s 10-7 upset of
Florida. A victory over Auburn
is expected to earn the Bulldogs
a return trip to Jacksonville.
Don’t miss
it!!
Nov. 21st
Auburn came into the 1975
season rated the second best
team in the Southeastern
Conference and given a chance
to battle Alabama for the
league crown. This is the last of
25 years as head coach at
Auburn for Shug Jordan and his
players were anxious to give
him a rousing sendoff.
It didn’t work out that way.
Upset by Memphis State and
Virginia Tech, beaten by
Tennessee and Florida and tied
by Baylor and Mississippi
State, the War Eagles, now 3-4-
2, appear doomed to their worst
season record since way back
in 1952 — Jordan's second year
at their helm — when they
went 2-8...
Picking an all-Southeastern
Conference quarterback this
season will not be an easy task.
Sophomore Tim Ellis of Ole
Miss leads in passing percent
age (.583) and completions per
game (7) but has played in only
six of the Rebels nine games.
Phil Gargis was the pre-
Hawks rip
Celts, 100-91
HARTFORD, Conn. (UPI) -
The Atlanta Hawks had a
surprise for the Boston Celtics
— defense.
The Hawks beat Boston 100-91
Tuesday night in their first
meeting of the new season.
Boston averaged 110 points in
defeating the Hawks all four
times they met last season. But
Atlanta contained the Celtics
this time and forced 28
turnovers.
“Cotton told us before the
game we had to stop their fast
break,” Atlanta’s Connie Haw
kins said. “We were able to
contain Boston and I thought
our offense did well.”
Hawkins came up with two
key baskets in the final minutes
to hold off a Celtics’ attempt to
rally. He wound up with 16
season favorite, but the Auburn
quarterback has completed only
33 passes in nine games and is
far down the list in total
offense. Florida’s Don Gaffney
rated high but missed two
games with a broken wrist.
A likely candidate is Randy
Wallace of Tennessee who leads
the SEC in passing yardage
(963) and total offense (1,180)
with four games left to play...
Dußose and Collins should be
near-unanimous choices for two
of the three runningback slots
on the 1975 all-SEC team. The
other is up for grabs between
senior Glynn Harrison and
sophomore Kevin McLee of
Georgia, junior Walter Packer
of Mississippi State, and
sophomore Johnny Davis of
Alabama.
Collins, Willie Shelby of
Alabama and Stanley Morgan
of Tennessee were the running
backs on the 1974 all-SEC team.
But Shelby has not played up to
his standard of last year and
Morgan has been hobbled by
injury since early in the season.
points for the night.
Boston coach Tom Heinsohn
complained about numerous
calls and was assessed a
technical foul. Boston’s Charlie
Scott picked up two technicals
for arguing with officials.

Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons have reduced their player roster to

receiver Gerald Tinker and runningback Oscar Reed has
been placed on waivers. In addition, Campbell said
cornerback Ron Mabra has been put on the injured
reserve list.

A new trophy to be known as the Phoenix Cup will be at

Georgia
One regular and perhaps two other players will be
missing from the Georgia lineup Saturday when the
Bulldogs take on Auburn at Athens. Team officials say
offensive guard Joel Parrish is definitely out with a hurt
knee. The doubtful players are Quarterback Ray Goff and
punter Bucky Dilts.
Peach Bowl
North Carolina State appears to be the first choice of the
Peach Bowl for a “Home Team” in the post-season
football game in Atlanta. But officials say they are not
ready to issue invitations.

The Atlanta Hawks had a surprise for the Boston
