Reagan’s daughter says no
BOSTON (UPI) — Maureen Reagan, daughter of
former California Gov. Ronald Reagan, says she does not
want her father to run for the Republican presidential
nomination.
“I am the most vociferous of all his detractors in our
family regarding his candidacy,” Miss Reagan, 31, said
Tuesday.
“It is for reasons, all personal and very selfish. They
come after eight years of having to make phone calls to
arrange appointments to speak to my own father,” she

Donald Alexander
Maureen Reagan
said.
“Furthermore, I have a career of my own, and I am
getting awfully sick of being known as somebody’s kid,”
said the aspiring actress, currently on a speaking tour to
plug an upcoming appearance in an NBC television
movie.
Alexander cleared
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The Justice Department has
cleared Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Donald
C. Alexander of one of several allegations against him.
A department spokesman said Tuesday Alexander was
cleared of accusations he illegally gave tax advice to
Procter & Gamble. But the spokesman said “certain
(other) allegations have been referred to the FBI” for
further investigation.
They presumably concern news accounts of
Alexander’s involvement in allegedly blocking tax audits
of Sen. Joseph Montoya, D-N.M., and in allegedly
suspending an IRS investigation of Bahamian tax havens
used by Americans.

LONDON—England’s Queen Elizabeth II meets
television’s “Kojak,” actor Telly Savalas, and tells him
she is a “Kojak” fan. They met backstage at the London
Palladium following annual Royal Variety Performance
Show for charity. Even the gentleman, Savalas returned
the compliment, saying, “I’m a big fan of yours, too,
ma’am. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you for such
a long time.” (UPI)
Spiro Agnew finishes novel
NEW YORK (UPI) — Former Vice President Spiro
Agnew has completed his political novel and delivered it
Tuesday to his literary agent, a spokesman for the Scott
Meridith Literary Agency said.
Set in the next decade, “The Canfield Decision” is about
an ambitious, liberal vice president who, in his quest for
his party’s presidential nomination, is secretly used by a
group of Iranian nationalists who want a confrontation
with Israel, bringing the United States close to a
dangerous international situation.
The novel will be published in May by Playboy Press.
Joan Little to speak
CINCINNATI (UPI) — Joan Little, acquitted of a
murder charge earlier this year in a highly publicized
North Carolina trial, will speak at the University of
Cincinnati next Tuesday.
Appearing on the speaker’s platform for the first time
with Ms. Little will be her two attorneys, Jerry Paul and
Karen Bethea Galloway.
Ms. Little was charged in the 1974 slaying of a white
jailer while she was in the Beaufort, N.C., jail. She
contended she acted in self-defense after the jailer
allegedly tried to rape her.
The case of the 21-year-old black woman focused
attention on both women’s rights and civil rights.
Rich apologizes
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UPI) — Blaming the pressures of
show business for his recent bouts of erratic behavior,
entertainer Charlie Rich has asked his fans to forgive
him.
In an open letter to fan club members, the 1974 Country
Music Entertainer of the Year said he has been sorting out
his personal problems and “doing some serious thinking”
about his life.
“The pressures on an entertainer’s life are terrific,” he
explained. “What you have heard about ‘the show must go
on’ is true. At times there was not enough of me to go
around. Something had to give.”
