Madrid journalists
freed; protest off
MADRID, Spain (UPI) -
Police today freed four Spanish
reporters arrested during a pro
amnesty demonstration, thus
averting a threatened strike by
Madrid’s journalists.
Club-carrying police waded
into a 5,000-strong rally at
Cabanchel prison Thursday, to
arrest the reporters and 21
other persons demonstrating for
full amnesty for political
prisoners.
Only three miles away, more
than 100,000 Spaniards cheered
King Juan Carlos I in parades
and ceremonies welcoming him
as the successor to Generalis
simo Francisco Franco.

MIAMI—A Bahamas Air BAC 1-11 jet is towed to a
runway at Miami International Airport for takeoff to
Nassau. A maintenance man found a bomb on the plane
shortly before it began boarding passengers. The bomb
was dismantled, luggage and other articles searched, and
then the plane was cleared to fly. The man driving the
tractor, James F. O’Conner, discovered the bomb. (UPI)

Association met into the early
morning hours today to discuss
possible measures to protest

Some members suggested a
strike, but the meeting broke
up after police released the

the prison protest.
The Cabanchel demonstra
tion, organized by several left
wing groups, stressed the
competing pressures faced by
Juan Carlos in his attempt to
lead Spain from the shadow of
36 years of rightrwing dictator
ship under Franco.

Radio exec.
IDS ANGELES (UPI) -
James Park, radio executive
and former manager of KNBC
TV at Burbank, Calif., will be
buried in his hometown of
Prairie Grove, Ark.
Park, 65, died Wednesday of
complications of leukemia at
UCLA Medical Center.
After graduating from the
University of Arkansas in 1935
with a degree in journalism,
Parks worked in radio advertis
ing in Chicago before forming
his own company. He packaged
and sold shows such as “The
Quiz Kids,” “Abie’s Irish
Rose,” and “The Arch Obler
Series.”
Senior judge
MILWAUKEE (UPI) - Rob
ert E. Tehan, the senior federal
judge in Wisconsin’s eastern
district and a member of the
federal judiciary for 26 years,
died Thursday. He was 70.
Tehan had been seriously ill
and hospitalized since Nov. 20.
A power in state Democratic
politics for years, he was
appointed to his federal judge
ship in 1949 by President Harry
S. Truman. He retired in 1971
after serving 22 years on the
federal bench and then became
senior judge, one who is semi
retired and allowed to hear
federal cases anywhere in the
country.
Holiday toll
7 in Georgia

A youth was killed when his
car slammed into a tree in
Statham early today, pushing
Georgia’s accidental death toll
for the Thanksgiving holidays
to at least seven.
Six of the fatalities were the
result of traffic mishaps. The
other victim died in a fire.
The latest reported traffic
victim was Terry Lee Hunter,
19, of Winder, who died around
1 a.m. in the wreckage of his
car on a city street in Statham
in Barrow County. The State
Patrol said Hunter’s car left
the street at high speed, struck
a tree and overturned on him.
He was alone.
Jack Fortenberry, 54, of
Gadsden, Ala., was killed
Thursday night in a two-car
collision on Georgia highway
151,2.4 miles south of Ringgold.
Two other persons were injured
in the accident.

Day as she and her husband,
Billy, packed their car in
preparation for moving from
their Warner Robins home.
Doster was holding his wife
up so she could retrieve
something from a high shelf in
a carport utility room when she
knocked over a jar of gasoline,
which broke and exploded when
exposed to a gas heater.
The explosion engulfed the
woman in flames and seriously
burned her husband.
Charlie Aubrey Clements, 34,
of Mcßae was killed Thursday
morning when his car left a
Wheeler County road, turned
over and struck a tree. The
Georgia State Patrol said
Clements was traveling at an
excessive rate of speed when
the accident occured on county
road S-1122, about nine miles
south of Alamo.
John Ralph Johnston, 65, of
LaGrange was killed Thursday
morning in Troup County in the
collision of his car with a train
at a railroad crossing. The
patrol said his car ran through
the crossing’s gates and was
struck by the train about 10
miles east of LaGrange on
Georgia 109.
Stanley Slaughter, 21, of
Stockbridge died early Thurs
day on 1-75 near Forest Park in
Clayton County. Authorities
said Slaughter’s southbound car
went out of control on rain
slicked pavement, slid across
the median and hit another car
head-on.
Robert McGlohan, 39, of
Jesup, a pedestrian on a rural
road in Wayne County, was
struck by a truck and killed
Wednesday evening, about six
miles north of Jesup.
The patrol has predicted that
26 persons would die in traffic
accidents in Georgia during the
102-hour holiday weekend that
began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and
ends at midnight Sunday.

Superior Court judge arrested
for lewd conduct with another
man in a sex movie theater
retired on a $29,000 a year
pension, records disclosed
today.
Judge Sherman W. Smith and
another man were arrested in a
Hollywood theater Aug. 1 on
